Reinforcement Ring-Augmented Hip Arthroplasty: A 35-Year Follow-up.
During the late 1980s, techniques were evolving to prevent acetabular component loosening. Inadequate acetabular bone stock further complicated this concern, which was traditionally addressed with cementation and bone grafting during this time period. However, one evolving tactic to address acetabular component loosening in the setting of inadequate acetabular bone stock was to augment bone graft with an acetabular reinforcement ring. In 1963, a 26-year-old, active male sustained a right-sided femoral neck fracture following a skiing accident. He ultimately developed a collapsed femoral head and varus deformity of the femoral neck requiring a total hip arthroplasty with a cemented monoblock femoral component and a polyethylene acetabular component cemented into a reinforcement ring. The initial procedure was performed in 1988, and this prosthesis is still functioning 35 years later and represents one of the longest follow-ups of a patient with a primary total hip arthroplasty with a reinforcement ring
Parental misperceptions of ingroup norms for child discipline
This work is based on research supported in part by the National Research Foundation of South Africa (grants numbered IFR2011033100037 and IFR170206222035) and the Economic and Social Research Council (ES/N01068X/1).The influence of perceived social norms on behaviour has been studied in a variety of domains. However, little research has examined their application to child discipline. This study explored social norms perceptions and their associations with parental discipline in greater Cape Town, South Africa. A crossâsectional study of 195 mothers (using convenience sampling) from two Early Childhood Development centres examined selfâreported violent and nonâviolent parenting behaviour, and perceived descriptive (usual behaviour in a group) and injunctive (appraisal of such behaviour) group norms. Parents overestimated the prevalence of violent parenting. Perceived descriptive norms of violent parenting were associated with selfâreported violent parenting behaviour; and perceived descriptive norms of nonâviolent parenting were associated with selfâreported nonâviolent parenting behaviour. Estimation of support for violent and for nonâviolent parenting differed by centre, as did the relationship between perceived injunctive norms of nonâviolent parenting and selfâreported nonâviolent parenting behaviour. We also found significant effects of social identification, parent educational attainment and parentâreported child misbehaviour. Parents' perceptions of group norms of parental discipline may be mistaken yet influence their own behaviour, providing the potential basis for violence prevention interventions.Publisher PDFPeer reviewe
The Economic Burden of Violence Against Children in South Africa
The purpose of this study was to estimate the economic burden of violence against children in South Africa. We assembled summative estimates of lifetime prevalence, calculated the magnitude of associations with negative outcomes, and thereby estimated the economic burden of violence against children. According to our calculations, 2.3 million and 84,287 disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) lost in South Africa in 2015 were attributable to nonfatal and fatal violence against children, respectively. The estimated economic value of DALYs lost to violence against children (including both fatal and nonfatal) in South Africa in 2015 totalled ZAR173 billion (US 2.0 billion) and ZAR9.6 billion (US 124 million) on child care and protection in fiscal year 2015/2016, many of which costs are directly related to violence against children. This study confirms the importance of prioritising violence against children as a key social and economic concern for South Africaâs future
