    Segregating California's Future: Inequality and Its Alternative, 60 Years after Brown v. Board of Education

    California has had serious issues of separation and discrimination in its schools since it became a state. It was little affected by the Brown decision, which was directed primarily at the 17 states that had laws mandating the segregation of African Americans. Although the California Supreme Court recognized a broad desegregation right in the state constitution, and the legislature briefly mandated that school boards take action to enforce this right, both were reversed by voter-approved propositions. The 1979 Proposition One led to the termination of the city's desegregation plan -- the first major city in the U.S. to end its plan. U.S. Supreme Court decisions in the 1990s led eventually to the termination of the federal desegregation orders in San Francisco and San Jose. Major court decisions in California mandating desegregation that occurred in the 1970s were overturned by the 1990s, thus California presently has no school integration policy. Segregation has grown substantially in the past two decades, especially for Latinos. White students' contact with nonwhite and poor students has increased significantly because of the dramatic change in overall population. Black and Latino students are strongly concentrated in schools that have far lower quality, according to state Academic Performance Index (API) ratings. Conversely, a far larger share of whites and Asians attend the most highly related schools and thus are the most prepared for college.     A simulation study of corn production and low-temperature drying for Central Iowa

    Two computer models, CORNSIM and FALDRY, were developed and used to conduct a simulation study of corn production and low-temperature drying for Central Iowa conditions. CORNSIM simulates a complete corn production enterprise. Given a specific management strategy, machinery capacity, and cropping season, CORNSIM simulates planting, crop development, yield, and harvesting. CORNSIM was developed to provide the simulated flow of harvested grain. FALDRY simulates a system of low-temperature corn drying bins. FALDRY inputs include bin specifications, weather data, and the incoming flow of harvested grain. FALDRY was developed to predict the success or failure of a low-temperature corn drying system and the amount of electrical energy it would consume;The simulation study addressed three major objectives: (1) Determine the relative benefits of additional fan power versus the use of supplement heat to enhance the performance of a low-temperature drying system. (2) Test the feasibility of designing a low-temperature drying system to match the corn harvesting capacity of a typical Central Iowa farming enterprise. (3) Develop the optimum daily filling strategy and design recommendations for a low-temperature corn drying system for Central Iowa;The following conclusions are given for Central Iowa conditions. It is expected the findings would be similar for most of the Corn Belt. (1) CORNSIM is a valid simulation model of a corn production enterprise. It can be used to determine the relative effects of changes in production strategy. (2) FALDRY is a valid simulation model of a low-temperature corn drying system. It has the flexibility to accommodate layer-filling and is able to predict the grain moisture profile. (3) The most efficient method of using electrical energy to increase drying rate, improve the probability of drying in the fall, and reduce grain deterioration is to increase fan power. (4) If the daily harvest rate is 1/16 or less of the total production, it is feasible to match the capacity of the harvesting and low-temperature drying system. (5) The following design criteria and management strategy are recommended for low-temperature corn drying systems: (a) Maximum grain depth of 16-20 feet. (b) Fan-power-to-grain ratio of 1.25 to 1.75 horsepower per 1000 bushels of bin storage capacity. (c) Use a high-performance axial fan (large bin may require 2 or more fans). (d) Follow the controlled-filling strategy

    INVESTMENT ANALYSIS OF ALTERNATIVE FRUIT TREE SPRAYERS IN MICHIGAN ORCHARDS

    Changing orchard sprayer technology and rising pesticide costs to fruit growers raise the need to analyze the profitability of alternative sprayer investments. This study analyzes investments in four orchard sprayers for use in Michigan apple production: an air blast sprayer, a tower boom sprayer, a tower boom sprayer equipped with electronic sensors that activate spray nozzles when foliage is detected, and an air curtain sprayer that targets spray with a layer of forced air. Assuming equal pest control efficacy, the study calculates the annualized net present cost per acre of owning and operating each sprayer for ten years using a baseline discount rate of 10 percent over 200 acres of semi-dwarf apple trees. The analysis found the annualized net present cost per acre, from least to greatest, to be 287fortheaircurtainsprayer,287 for the air curtain sprayer, 312 for the tower sprayer with electronic sensors, 345fortheplaintowersprayer,and345 for the plain tower sprayer, and 391 for the conventional air blast sprayer. Sensitivity analysis revealed that the ranking of these cost results was sensitive to farm size, but not to percentage of funds borrowed, discount rate, loan interest rate, or pesticide costs within the ranges investigated.     Periodontal disease in a patient receiving Bevacizumab: a case report

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Introduction</p> <p>Bevacizumab is a monoclonal antibody that inhibits the action of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) thereby acting as an angiogenesis inhibitor. As a result, supply of oxygen and nutrients to tissues is impaired and tumour cell growth is reduced. Reported side effects due to bevacizumab are hypertension and increased risk of bleeding. Bowel perforation has also been reported. Periodontal disease in patients on bevacizumab therapy has not been reported before.</p> <p>Case Presentation</p> <p>We report a case of a forty-three year old woman who developed periodontitis whilst receiving bevacizumab for lung cancer. The periodontal disease remained stable on discontinuation of the drug.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Further investigations are needed to determine the mechanism for bevacizumab-induced periodontal disease.</p

    A Bayesian Partition Method for Detecting Pleiotropic and Epistatic eQTL Modules

    Studies of the relationship between DNA variation and gene expression variation, often referred to as β€œexpression quantitative trait loci (eQTL) mapping”, have been conducted in many species and resulted in many significant findings. Because of the large number of genes and genetic markers in such analyses, it is extremely challenging to discover how a small number of eQTLs interact with each other to affect mRNA expression levels for a set of co-regulated genes. We present a Bayesian method to facilitate the task, in which co-expressed genes mapped to a common set of markers are treated as a module characterized by latent indicator variables. A Markov chain Monte Carlo algorithm is designed to search simultaneously for the module genes and their linked markers. We show by simulations that this method is more powerful for detecting true eQTLs and their target genes than traditional QTL mapping methods. We applied the procedure to a data set consisting of gene expression and genotypes for 112 segregants of S. cerevisiae. Our method identified modules containing genes mapped to previously reported eQTL hot spots, and dissected these large eQTL hot spots into several modules corresponding to possibly different biological functions or primary and secondary responses to regulatory perturbations. In addition, we identified nine modules associated with pairs of eQTLs, of which two have been previously reported. We demonstrated that one of the novel modules containing many daughter-cell expressed genes is regulated by AMN1 and BPH1. In conclusion, the Bayesian partition method which simultaneously considers all traits and all markers is more powerful for detecting both pleiotropic and epistatic effects based on both simulated and empirical data

    Single-day therapy: an expert opinion on a recent development for the episodic treatment of recurrent genital herpes

    One common method for treating recurrent genital herpes outbreaks is 3–5Β day episodic therapy with nucleoside analogues. However, since maximum viral replication occurs within 24Β h after the onset of symptoms, short-term patient-initiated episodic therapy started at prodromal onset or at the first appearance of lesions in patients without a prodrome may represent an important option. In a recent randomized trial, single-day famciclovir treatment decreased lesion healing time and the duration of pain and other symptoms by approximately 2Β days compared to placebo, and prevented progression to a full outbreak in almost one in four patients. Because single-day treatment is more convenient than traditional therapies, it may lead to improved patient compliance and better overall management of recurrent genital herpes outbreaks

    Shared medical appointments and mindfulness for Type 2 diabetes : a mixed-methods feasibility study

    Introduction: Type 2 diabetes (T2DM) is a major health concern with significant personal and healthcare system costs. There is growing interest in using shared medical appointments (SMAs) for management of T2DM. We hypothesize that adding mindfulness to SMAs may be beneficial. This study aimed to assess the feasibility and acceptability of SMAs with mindfulness for T2DM within primary care in Australia. Materials and Methods: We conducted a single-blind randomized controlled feasibility study of SMAs within primary care for people with T2DM living in Western Sydney, Australia. People with T2DM, age 21 years and over, with HbA1c > 6.5% or fasting glucose >7.00 mmol/L within the past 3 months were eligible to enroll. The intervention group attended six 2-h programmed SMAs (pSMAs) which were held fortnightly. pSMAs included a structured education program and mindfulness component. The control group received usual care from their healthcare providers. We collected quantitative and qualitative data on acceptability as well as glycemic control (glycated hemoglobin and continuous glucose monitoring), lipids, anthropometric measures, blood pressure, selfreported psychological outcomes, quality of life, diet, and physical activity using an ActiGraph accelerometer. Results: Over a 2-month period, we enrolled 18 participants (10 females, 8 males) with a mean age of 58 years (standard deviation 9.8). We had 94.4% retention. All participants in the intervention group completed at least four pSMAs. Participants reported that attending pSMAs had been a positive experience that allowed them to accept their diagnosis and empowered them to make changes, which led to beneficial effects including weight loss and better glycemic control. Four pSMA participants found the mindfulness component helpful while two did not. All of the seven participants who contributed to qualitative evaluation reported improved psychosocial wellbeing and found the group setting beneficial. There was a significant difference in total cholesterol levels at 12 weeks between groups (3.86 mmol/L in intervention group vs. 4.15 mmol/L in the control group; p = 0.025) as well as pain intensity levels as measured by the PROMIS-29 (2.11 vs. 2.38; p = 0.034). Conclusion: pSMAs are feasible and acceptable to people with T2DM and may result in clinical improvement. A follow-up fully-powered randomized controlled trial is warranted.     In vivo and in vitro tracking of erosion in biodegradable materials using non-invasive fluorescence imaging

    Author Manuscript 2012 March 1.The design of erodible biomaterials relies on the ability to program the in vivo retention time, which necessitates real-time monitoring of erosion. However, in vivo performance cannot always be predicted by traditional determination of in vitro erosion[superscript 1, 2] , and standard methods sacrifice samples or animals[superscript 3], preventing sequential measures of the same specimen. We harnessed non-invasive fluorescence imaging to sequentially follow in vivo material-mass loss to model the degradation of materials hydrolytically (PEG:dextran hydrogel) and enzymatically (collagen). Hydrogel erosion rates in vivo and in vitro correlated, enabling the prediction of in vivo erosion of new material formulations from in vitro data. Collagen in vivo erosion was used to infer physiologic in vitro conditions that mimic erosive in vivo environments.
