    Rheological and thixotropic behavior of banana (Musa cavendishii) puree

    Some rheological properties of banana puree were investigated. Experimental data was fitted to Hahn, Weltmanand Figoni-Shoemaker equations in order to quantify the thixotropic behavior. Thixotropy measurements were carried out in a range between 5 and 75ÂșC and applying she arrates of 10 and 20 s-1, finding that, in all cases, the Figoni-Shoemaker relationship was the best one to model the time dependency response. The flow behavior was well fitted by the Herschel-Bulkley model in a range between 5 and 75ÂșC, and between 12 and 22 ÂșBrix, obtaining that consistency coefficient decreased with temperature and increased with soluble solids content, flow behavior index decreased with soluble solids content, and apparent viscosity decreased with temperature and increased with soluble solids content. Adjusting the variation of apparent viscosity with temperature by means of an Arrhenius-type equation, the activation energy was obtained for different soluble solids content

    Periodic cometary showers: Real or imaginary?

    Since the initial reports in 1980, a considerable body of chemical and physical evidence has been accumulated to indicate that a major impact event occurred on earth 65 million years ago. The effects of this event were global in extent and have been suggested as the cause of the sudden demise or mass extinction of a large percentage of life, including the dinosaurs, at the end of the geologic time period known as the Cretaceous. Recent statistical analyses of extinctions in the marine faunal record for the last 250 million years have suggested that mass extinctions may occur with a periodicity of every 26 to 30 million years. Following these results, other workers have attempted to demonstrate that these extinction events, like that at the end of the Cretaceous, are temporally correlated with large impact events. A recent scenario suggests that they are the result of periodic showers of comets produced by either the passage of the solar system through the galactic plane or by perturbations of the cometary cloud in the outer solar system by a, as yet unseen, solar companion. This hypothesized solar companion has been given the name Nemesis

    NuSTAR Hard X-ray Observation of the Gamma-ray Binary Candidate HESS J1832-093

    We present a hard X-ray observation of the TeV gamma-ray binary candidate HESS J1832-093 coincident with supernova remnant (SNR) G22.7-0.2 using the Nuclear Spectroscopic Telescope Array (NuSTAR). Non-thermal X-ray emission from XMMU J183245-0921539, the X-ray source associated with HESS J1832-093, is detected up to ~30 keV and is well-described by an absorbed power-law model with the best-fit photon index Γ=1.5±0.1\Gamma = 1.5\pm0.1. A re-analysis of archival Chandra and XMM-Newton data finds that the long-term X-ray flux increase of XMMU J183245-0921539 is 50−20+4050^{+40}_{-20}% (90% C.L.), much less than previously reported. A search for a pulsar spin period or binary orbit modulation yields no significant signal to a pulse fraction limit of fp < 19% in the range 4 ms < P < 40 ks. No red noise is detected in the FFT power spectrum to suggest active accretion from a binary system. While further evidence is required, we argue that the X-ray and gamma-ray properties of XMMU J183245-0921539 are most consistent with a non-accreting binary generating synchrotron X- rays from particle acceleration in the shock formed as a result of the pulsar and stellar wind collision. We also report on three nearby hard X-ray sources, one of which may be associated with diffuse emission from a fast-moving supernova fragment interacting with a dense molecular cloud.Comment: ApJ in press. 9 page

    Isolation Effects on the Moon: High Topographic Slope Observations from the LRO and LOLA Instruments

    The extremely low temperatures in the Moon's polar permanent shadow regions (PSR) has long been considered a unique factor necessary for entrapping volatile Hydrogen (H). However, recent discoveries indicate some H concentrations lie outside PSR, suggesting other geophysical factors may also influence H distributions. In this study we consider insolation and its resulting thermal effects as a loss/redistribution process influencing the Moon's near-surface < 1m volatile H budget. To isolate regional (5deg latitude band) insolation effects we correlate two data sets collected from the ongoing, 1.5 year long mapping mission of the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter (LRO). Epithermal neutron mapping data from the Lunar Exploration Neutron Detector (LEND) is registered and analyzed in the context of slope derivations from Lunar topography maps produced by the Lunar Observing Laser Altimeter (LOLA). Lunar epithermal neutrons are inferred to be direct geochemical evidence for near-surface H due to the correlated suppression of surface leakage fluxes of epithermal neutrons with increased H concentration. Regional suppressions of neutrons seen in LEND maps are considered localized evidence of H concentration increase in the upper 1 m of the Lunar surface.     Loss of heterozygosity and SOSTDC1 in adult and pediatric renal tumors

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>Deletions within the short arm of chromosome 7 are observed in approximately 25% of adult and 10% of Wilms pediatric renal tumors. Within Wilms tumors, the region of interest has been delineated to a 2-Mb minimal region that includes ten known genes. Two of these ten candidate genes, <it>SOSTDC1 </it>and <it>MEOX2</it>, are particularly relevant to tumor development and maintenance. This finding, coupled with evidence that SOSTDC1 is frequently downregulated in adult renal cancer and regulates both Wingless-Int (Wnt)- and bone morphogenetic protein (BMP)-induced signaling, points to a role for SOSTDC1 as a potential tumor suppressor.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>To investigate this hypothesis, we interrogated the Oncomine database to examine the SOSTDC1 levels in adult renal clear cell tumors and pediatric Wilms tumors. We then performed single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) and sequencing analyses of <it>SOSTDC1 </it>in 25 pediatric and 36 adult renal tumors. Immunohistochemical staining of patient samples was utilized to examine the impact of <it>SOSTDC1 </it>genetic aberrations on SOSTDC1 protein levels and signaling.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>Within the Oncomine database, we found that SOSTDC1 levels were reduced in adult renal clear cell tumors and pediatric Wilms tumors. Through SNP and sequencing analyses of 25 Wilms tumors, we identified four with loss of heterozygosity (LOH) at 7p and three that affected <it>SOSTDC1</it>. Of 36 adult renal cancers, we found five with LOH at 7p, two of which affected <it>SOSTDC1</it>. Immunohistochemical analysis of SOSTDC1 protein levels within these tumors did not reveal a relationship between these instances of <it>SOSTDC1 </it>LOH and SOSTDC1 protein levels. Moreover, we could not discern any impact of these genetic alterations on Wnt signaling as measured by altered beta-catenin levels or localization.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>This study shows that genetic aberrations near <it>SOSTDC1 </it>are not uncommon in renal cancer, and occur in adult as well as pediatric renal tumors. These observations of <it>SOSTDC1 </it>LOH, however, did not correspond with changes in SOSTDC1 protein levels or signaling regulation. Although our conclusions are limited by sample size, we suggest that an alternative mechanism such as epigenetic silencing of <it>SOSTDC1 </it>may be a key contributor to the reduced SOSTDC1 mRNA and protein levels observed in renal cancer.</p

    Fibromyalgia Syndrome Care of Iraq- and Afghanistan-Deployed Veterans in Veterans Health Administration

    Little is known regarding fibromyalgia syndrome (FMS) care among Operation Iraqi Freedom/Operation Enduring Freedom/Operation New Dawn (OIF/OEF/OND) Veterans. Current recommendations include interdisciplinary, teambased combined care approaches and limited opioid use. In this study of OIF/OEF/OND Veterans who accessed Veterans Health Administration services between 2002 and 2012, we hypothesized that combined care (defined as at least 4 primary care visits/yr with visits to mental health and/or rheumatology) versus/yr only would be associated with lower risk of at least 2 opioid prescriptions 12 mo following an FMS diagnosis. Using generalized linear models with a loglink, the Poisson family, and robust standard errors, we estimated risk ratios (RRs) and 95% confidence intervals (CIs). We found that 1% of Veterans had at least 2 FMS diagnoses (International Classification of Diseases-9th Revision-Clinical Modification code 729.1) or at least 1 FMS diagnosis by rheumatology. Veterans with (vs without) FMS were more likely to be female, older, Hispanic, and never/currently married. Combined primary, mental health, and rheumatology care was associated with at least 2 opioid prescriptions (RR [95% CI] for males 2.2 [1.1–4.4] and females 2.8 [0.4–18.6]). Also, combined care was associated with at least 2 nonopioid painrelated prescriptions, a practice supported by evidence-based clinical practice guidelines. In tandem, these results provide mixed evidence of benefit of combined care for FMS. Future studies of healthcare encounter characteristics, care coordination, and benefits for Veterans with FMS are needed
