Giant Optical Non-linearity induced by a Single Two-Level System interacting with a Cavity in the Purcell Regime
A two-level system that is coupled to a high-finesse cavity in the Purcell
regime exhibits a giant optical non-linearity due to the saturation of the
two-level system at very low intensities, of the order of one photon per
lifetime. We perform a detailed analysis of this effect, taking into account
the most important practical imperfections. Our conclusion is that an
experimental demonstration of the giant non-linearity should be feasible using
semiconductor micropillar cavities containing a single quantum dot in resonance
with the cavity mode.Comment: 40 pages, 16 figures, accepted in Phys. Rev.
Ce-L3-XAS study of the temperature dependence of the 4f occupancy in the Kondo system Ce2Rh3Al9
We have used temperature dependent x-ray absorption at the Ce-L3 edge to
investigate the recently discovered Kondo compound Ce2Rh3Al9. The systematic
changes of the spectral lineshape with decreasing temperature are analyzed and
found to be related to a change in the occupation number, n_f, as the
system undergoes a transition into a Kondo state. The temperature dependence of
indicates a characteristic temperature of 150K, which is clearly related
with the high temperature anomaly observed in the magnetic susceptibility of
the same system. The further anomaly observed in the resistivity of this system
at low temperature (ca. 20K) has no effect on n_f and is thus not of Kondo
origin.Comment: 7 pages, three figures, submitted to PR
Symmetry breaking induced by random fluctuations for Bose-Einstein condensates in a double-well trap
This paper is devoted to the study of the dynamics of two weakly-coupled
Bose-Einstein condensates confined in a double-well trap and perturbed by
random external forces. Energy diffusion due to random forcing allows the
system to visit symmetry-breaking states when the number of atoms exceeds a
threshold value. The energy distribution evolves to a stationary distribution
which depends on the initial state of the condensate only through the total
number of atoms. This loss of memory of the initial conditions allows a simple
and complete description of the stationary dynamics of the condensate which
randomly visits symmetric and symmetry-breaking states.Comment: 12 pages, 6 figure
