    Collaborative Cross-Institutional Model for Faculty and Librarians Teaching Evidence-Based Practice: A Future Fusion Recipe?

    Poster presented at: What\u27s Cooking? A Taste of the Future 2009 NAHSL Annual MeetingSamoset Resort, October 25-27, Rockport, ME This poster describes the development of a novel cross-institutional collaboration between librarians and faculty from a pharmacy school and a medical school to enhance the teaching of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) in each other’s school. Specifically, it focuses on the librarians’ active role in bringing shared cross-institutional and cross-disciplinary expertise to the table. Collaboration initiatives described include the joint development of EBP educational modules, EBP pharmacotherapy case studies, EBP Pharmacology elective course, formal and informal meetings, campus visits, and teaching observations. The poster provides a roadmap of starting such collaboration. In addition, it highlights the value of building strategic relationships between faculty and librarians across institutions to share expertise and teaching responsibility to advance student learning

    Printable microscale interfaces for long-term peripheral nerve mapping and precision control

    The nascent field of bioelectronic medicine seeks to decode and modulate peripheral nervous system signals to obtain therapeutic control of targeted end organs and effectors. Current approaches rely heavily on electrode-based devices, but size scalability, material and microfabrication challenges, limited surgical accessibility, and the biomechanically dynamic implantation environment are significant impediments to developing and deploying advanced peripheral interfacing technologies. Here, we present a microscale implantable device – the nanoclip – for chronic interfacing with fine peripheral nerves in small animal models that begins to meet these constraints. We demonstrate the capability to make stable, high-resolution recordings of behaviorally-linked nerve activity over multi-week timescales. In addition, we show that multi-channel, current-steering-based stimulation can achieve a high degree of functionally-relevant modulatory specificity within the small scale of the device.     Direct Limits on the B(0)(s) Oscillation Frequency

    This is the publisher's version, also available electronically from http://journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevLett.97.021802.We report results of a study of the B(0)(s) oscillation frequency using a large sample of B(0)(s) semileptonic decays corresponding to approximately 1  fb(−1) of integrated luminosity collected by the D0 experiment at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider in 2002–2006. The amplitude method gives a lower limit on the B(0)(s) oscillation frequency at 14.8  ps(−1) at the 95% C.L. At Δms=19  ps(−1), the amplitude deviates from the hypothesis A=0 (1) by 2.5 (1.6) standard deviations, corresponding to a two-sided C.L. of 1% (10%). A likelihood scan over the oscillation frequency, Δms, gives a most probable value of 19  ps(−1) and a range of 17<Δms<21  ps(−1) at the 90% C.L., assuming Gaussian uncertainties. This is the first direct two-sided bound measured by a single experiment. If Δms lies above 22  ps(−1), then the probability that it would produce a likelihood minimum similar to the one observed in the interval 16–22  ps(−1) is (5.0±0.3)%

    Search for a heavy resonance decaying into a Z+jet final state in pp-bar collisions at s√=1.96  TeV using the D0 detector

No indication for such a resonance was found in a data sample corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 370  pb(−1). We set upper limits on the cross section times branching fraction for heavy resonance production at the 95% C.L. as a function of the resonance mass and width. The limits are interpreted within the framework of a specific model of excited quark production

    Mitigating The Burden Of Diabetes In Sub-Saharan Africa Through An Integrated Diagonal Health Systems Approach

    Diabetes is a chronic non-communicable disease (NCD) presenting growing health and economic burdens in sub-Saharan Africa (SSA). Diabetes is unique due to its cross-cutting nature, impacting multiple organ systems and increasing the risk for other communicable and non-communicable diseases. Unfortunately, the quality of care for diabetes in SSA is poor, largely due to a weak disease management framework and fragmented health systems in most sub-Saharan African countries. We argue that by synergizing disease-specific vertical programs with system-specific horizontal programs through an integrated disease-system diagonal approach, we can improve access, quality, and safety of diabetes care programs while also supporting other chronic diseases. We recommend utilizing the six World Health Organization (WHO) health system building blocks – 1) leadership and governance, 2) financing, 3) health workforce, 4) health information systems, 5) supply chains, and 6) service delivery – as a framework to design a diagonal approach with a focus on health system strengthening and integration to implement and scale quality diabetes care. We discuss the successes and challenges of this approach, outline opportunities for future care programming and research, and highlight how this approach can lead to the improvement in the quality of care for diabetes and other chronic diseases across SSA

    Search for right-handed W bosons in top quark decay

    This is the publisher's version, also available electronically from http://journals.aps.org/prd/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevD.72.011104.We present a measurement of the fraction f(+) of right-handed W bosons produced in top quark decays, based on a candidate sample of tt-bar events in the lepton+jets decay mode. These data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 230  pb(−1), collected by the D0 detector at the Fermilab Tevatron pp-bar Collider at s√=1.96  TeV. We use a constrained fit to reconstruct the kinematics of the tt-bar and decay products, which allows for the measurement of the leptonic decay angle θ∗ for each event. By comparing the cosθ∗ distribution from the data with those for the expected background and signal for various values of f(+), we find f(+(=0.00±0.13(stat)±0.07(syst). This measurement is consistent with the standard model prediction of f(+)=3.6×10(−4)

    Validity of a three-variable juvenile arthritis disease activity score in children with new-onset juvenile idiopathic arthritis

    &lt;p&gt;Objectives To investigate the validity and feasibility of the Juvenile Arthritis Disease Activity Score (JADAS) in the routine clinical setting for all juvenile idiopathic arthritis (JIA) disease categories and explore whether exclusion of the erythrocyte sedimentation rate (ESR) from JADAS (the ‘JADAS3’) influences correlation with single markers of disease activity.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Methods JADAS-71, JADAS-27 and JADAS-10 were determined at baseline for an inception cohort of children with JIA in the Childhood Arthritis Prospective Study. JADAS3-71, JADAS3-27 and JADAS3-10 were determined using an identical formula but with exclusion of ESR. Correlation of JADAS with JADAS3 and single measures of disease activity/severity were determined by category.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Results Of 956 eligible children, sufficient data were available to calculate JADAS-71, JADAS-27 and JADAS-10 at baseline in 352 (37%) and JADAS3 in 551 (58%). The median (IQR) JADAS-71, JADAS-27 and JADAS-10 for all 352 children was 11 (5.9–18), 10.4 (5.7–17) and 11 (5.9–17.3), respectively. Median JADAS and JADAS3 varied significantly with the category (Kruskal–Wallis p=0.0001), with the highest values in children with polyarticular disease patterns. Correlation of JADAS and JADAS3 across all categories was excellent. Correlation of JADAS71 with single markers of disease activity/severity was good to moderate, with some variation across the categories. With the exception of ESR, correlation of JADAS3-71 was similar to correlation of JADAS-71 with the same indices.&lt;/p&gt; &lt;p&gt;Conclusions This study is the first to apply JADAS to all categories of JIA in a routine clinical setting in the UK, adding further information about the feasibility and construct validity of JADAS. For the majority of categories, clinical applicability would be improved by exclusion of the ESR.&lt;/p&gt

    Experimental Discrimination between Charge 2e/3 Top Quark and Charge 4e/3 Exotic Quark Production Scenarios

    This is the publisher's version, also available electronically from http://journals.aps.org/prl/abstract/10.1103/PhysRevLett.98.041801.We present the first experimental discrimination between the 2e/3 and 4e/3 top quark electric charge scenarios, using top quark pairs (tt-bar) produced in pp-bar collisions at s√=1.96  TeV by the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. We use 370  pb(−1) of data collected by the D0 experiment and select events with at least one high transverse momentum electron or muon, high transverse energy imbalance, and four or more jets. We discriminate between b- and b-bar-quark jets by using the charge and momenta of tracks within the jet cones. The data are consistent with the expected electric charge, |q|=2e/3. We exclude, at the 92% C.L., that the sample is solely due to the production of exotic quark pairs QQ-overbar with |q|=4e/3. We place an upper limit on the fraction of QQ-overbar pairs ρ<0.80 at the 90% C.L
