    Efficiency diagnostic and advantages of procalcitonin and C-reactive protein in the early diagnosis of sepsis

    The goal of our study is to assess the diagnostic profi tability of procalcitonin (PCT) in septic shock and another biomarker as C-reactive protein (CRP). Results: Fifty-four septic patients were assessed, 66% were males; mean age, 63 years. Eighty-eight percent was diagnosed as septic shock and 11% severe sepsis. Seventy-six percent were medical patients. Positive blood cultures in 42.5%. Sepsis origin: respiratory 46%, neurological 5%, digestive 37% and urinary 3%. Average SOFA score was 10.4. Conclusions: PCT and CRP have the same efficiency in early sepsis diagnosis. The PCT and CRP effi ciency diagnostic together is signifi cant but small. We suggest using both with the doubt of sepsis.Ye

    Anemia profile in critical septic patients hospitalized in the ICU

    This article is part of the supplement: 31st International Symposium on Intensive Care and Emergency MedicineThe aim was to describe the anemia profile of medical or surgical patients with severe sepsis or septic shock in the ICU, assessing severity scale, length of stay and mortality. The prevalence of microcytic anemia is more than one-half of our septic patients. There are iron metabolism disorders without significant differences between medical and surgical patients. Transferrin, a protein related to malnutrition, inflammatory response and organ dysfunction, is significantly lower in the most severe patients with higher organ dysfunction scores.Ye

Its use in combination with antiplatelet therapies has been essential to protect against stent thrombosis. The length of time this combination therapy is used has been modified in recent years and has been the subject of extensive research. The effect of prolonging the time it is taken or shortening it has been evaluated in different clinical conditions. In practice, the decisions regarding antithrombotic therapy after percutaneous coronary intervention are informed by the patient’s profile and the characteristics of the procedures performed.     Anion-Ď€ and lone pair-Ď€ interactions with s-tetrazine-based ligands

    Most of traditional and contemporary interest in s-tetrazine derivatives focuses onto their redox properties, reactivity and energy density. In recent times, however, an increasing number of reports highlighted the possible usefulness of the s-tetrazine moiety as a binding site for anionic and electron rich species, according to the high and positive quadrupolar moment of this heterocycle and the consequent strength of anion-π and lone pair-π interactions. Herein, after giving a quick perspective on s-tetrazine properties and on how they foster these types of π interactions, we present statistical and critical examination of the available structural data, doing justice to the debated topic of the existence and directionality of anion- and lone pair-π interactions.     How do different supramolecular forces contribute to the stabilization of complexes of organic anions in water? Oftentimes, when debating such a theme, we refer to broad concepts like positive or negative cooperative effects; the focus of the present work is rather on their interplay, i.e. on the way different kinds of stabilizing interactions (salt bridges, H-bonds, anion–π interactions, π–π stacking, solvent effects, etc.) dialogue among themselves. What happens if we tune the strengths of salt bridges by altering the basicity of the anion? What if we change the geometry of the charged group? How does shifting towards more hydrophilic or hydrophobic anions impact the stability of complexes in water? What happens in the solid state? Will aromatic anions go for a π–π stacking or an anion–π interaction mode and do they all behave in the same manner? Does the host/guest size make any difference? What if we play with regiochemistry: will one of the isomers be selectively recognized?     Molecular Segmentation of the Spinal Trigeminal Nucleus in the Adult Mouse Brain

To access the final edited and published work see https://doi.org/10.3389/fnana.2021.785840The trigeminal column is a hindbrain structure formed by second order sensory neurons that receive afferences from trigeminal primary (ganglionic) nerve fibers. Classical studies subdivide it into the principal sensory trigeminal nucleus located next to the pontine nerve root, and the spinal trigeminal nucleus which in turn consists of oral, interpolar and caudal subnuclei. On the other hand, according to the prosomeric model, this column would be subdivided into segmental units derived from respective rhombomeres. Experimental studies have mapped the principal sensory trigeminal nucleus to pontine rhombomeres (r) r2-r3 in the mouse. The spinal trigeminal nucleus emerges as a plurisegmental formation covering several rhombomeres (r4 to r11 in mice) across pontine, retropontine and medullary hindbrain regions. In the present work we reexamined the issue of rhombomeric vs. classical subdivisions of this column. To this end, we analyzed its subdivisions in an AZIN2-lacZ transgenic mouse, known as a reference model for hindbrain topography, together with transgenic reporter lines for trigeminal fibers. We screened as well for genes differentially expressed along the axial dimension of this structure in the adult and juvenile mouse brain. This analysis yielded genes from multiple functional families that display transverse domains fitting the mentioned rhombomeric map. The spinal trigeminal nucleus thus represents a plurisegmental structure with a series of distinct neuromeric units having unique combinatorial molecular profiles

    Tadpoles Assay: Its Application to a Water Toxicity Assessment of a Polluted Urban River

    The acute toxicity assay with premetamorphic tadpoles of Bufo arenarum as sentinel organism was applied to evaluate the quality of two water samples taken from three sites of theReconquista River, an urban watercourse which is recipient ofboth untreated industrial effluents and domestic wastes. Theresults of the 96 hr bioassays were compared with thephysicochemical parameters determined in the samples.Mortality rates in each sample were compared using the Bonferroni's test and a stepwise regression analysis of mortality andphysicochemical parameters was done. In this way, it was possible to build up consistent descriptive models which showedthat pH, Cl-, Cd2+ and Cu2+ concentrations in theriver water were significant independent variables and mightexplain, under the experimental conditions, the recordedtoxicity effects of the tested samples.Because of its simplicity, low cost and reliability it wassuggested the tadpoles bioassay be included in the set of testsused in integrated program of freshwater pollution.Facultad de Ciencias Naturales y Muse
