A microscopic model for a class of mixed-spin quantum antiferromagnets
We propose a microscopic model that describes the magnetic behavior of the
mixed-spin quantum systems RBaNiO (R= magnetic rare earth). An
evaluation of the properties of this model by Quantum Monte Carlo simulations
shows remarkable good agreement with the experimental data and provides new
insight into the physics of mixed-spin quantum magnets.Comment: revised version to be published in Phys. Rev.
Magnetic ordering, spin waves, and Haldane gap excitations in (Nd_x Y_{1-x})_2 Ba Ni O_5 linear-chain mixed-spin antiferromagnets
Linear-chain nickelates with the composition (Nd_x Y_{1-x})_2 Ba Ni O_5 (x=1,
x=0.75, x=0.5, and x=0.25) are studied in a series of neutron scattering
experiments. Powder diffraction is used to determine the temperature dependence
of the magnetic structure in all four systems. Single-crystal inelastic neutron
scattering is employed to investigate the temperature dependence of the
Haldane-gap excitations and low-energy spin waves in the x=1 compound Nd_2 Ba
Ni O_5. The results of these experiments are discussed in the context of the
``Haldane chain in a staggered field'' model for R_2 Ba Ni O_5 systems, and
quantitative agreement with theory is obtained.Comment: Major rewriting and inclusion of new experimental data 30 pages, 14

In Vivo Water Dynamics in Shewanella oneidensis Bacteria at High Pressure
Abstract: Following observations of survival of microbes and other life forms in deep subsurface environments it is necessary to understand their biological functioning under high pressure conditions. Key aspects of biochemical reactions and transport processes within cells are determined by the intracellular water dynamics. We studied water diffusion and rotational relaxation in live Shewanella oneidensis bacteria at pressures up to 500 MPa using quasi-elastic neutron scattering (QENS). The intracellular diffusion exhibits a significantly greater slowdown (by â10â30%) and an increase in rotational relaxation times (+10â40%) compared with water dynamics in the aqueous solutions used to resuspend the bacterial samples. Those results indicate both a pressure-induced viscosity increase and slowdown in ionic/macromolecular transport properties within the cells affecting the rates of metabolic and other biological processes. Our new data support emerging models for intracellular organisation with nanoscale water channels threading between macromolecular regions within a dynamically organized structure rather than a homogenous gel-like cytoplasm
Stress related epigenetic changes may explain opportunistic success in biological invasions in Antipode mussels
Different environmental factors could induce epigenetic changes, which are likely involved in the biological invasion process. Some of these factors are driven by humans as, for example, the pollution and deliberate or accidental introductions and others are due to natural conditions such as salinity. In this study, we have analysed the relationship between different stress factors: time in the new location, pollution and salinity with the methylation changes that could be involved in the invasive species tolerance to new environments. For this purpose, we have analysed two different musselsâ species, reciprocally introduced in antipode areas: the Mediterranean blue mussel Mytilus galloprovincialis and the New Zealand pygmy mussel Xenostrobus securis, widely recognized invaders outside their native distribution ranges. The demetylathion was higher in more stressed population, supporting the idea of epigenetic is involved in plasticity process. These results can open a new management protocols, using the epigenetic signals as potential pollution monitoring tool. We could use these epigenetic marks to recognise the invasive status in a population and determine potential biopollutants
Proposal of an extended t-J Hamiltonian for high-Tc cuprates from ab initio calculations on embedded clusters
A series of accurate ab initio calculations on Cu_pO-q finite clusters,
properly embedded on the Madelung potential of the infinite lattice, have been
performed in order to determine the local effective interactions in the CuO_2
planes of La_{2-x}Sr_xCuO_4 compounds. The values of the first-neighbor
interactions, magnetic coupling (J_{NN}=125 meV) and hopping integral
(t_{NN}=-555 meV), have been confirmed. Important additional effects are
evidenced, concerning essentially the second-neighbor hopping integral
t_{NNN}=+110meV, the displacement of a singlet toward an adjacent colinear
hole, h_{SD}^{abc}=-80 meV, a non-negligible hole-hole repulsion
V_{NN}-V_{NNN}=0.8 eV and a strong anisotropic effect of the presence of an
adjacent hole on the values of the first-neighbor interactions. The dependence
of J_{NN} and t_{NN} on the position of neighbor hole(s) has been rationalized
from the two-band model and checked from a series of additional ab initio
calculations. An extended t-J model Hamiltonian has been proposed on the basis
of these results. It is argued that the here-proposed three-body effects may
play a role in the charge/spin separation observed in these compounds, that is,
in the formation and dynamic of stripes.Comment: 24 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Multiplicity dependence of jet-like two-particle correlations in p-Pb collisions at = 5.02 TeV
Two-particle angular correlations between unidentified charged trigger and
associated particles are measured by the ALICE detector in p-Pb collisions at a
nucleon-nucleon centre-of-mass energy of 5.02 TeV. The transverse-momentum
range 0.7 5.0 GeV/ is examined,
to include correlations induced by jets originating from low
momen\-tum-transfer scatterings (minijets). The correlations expressed as
associated yield per trigger particle are obtained in the pseudorapidity range
. The near-side long-range pseudorapidity correlations observed in
high-multiplicity p-Pb collisions are subtracted from both near-side
short-range and away-side correlations in order to remove the non-jet-like
components. The yields in the jet-like peaks are found to be invariant with
event multiplicity with the exception of events with low multiplicity. This
invariance is consistent with the particles being produced via the incoherent
fragmentation of multiple parton--parton scatterings, while the yield related
to the previously observed ridge structures is not jet-related. The number of
uncorrelated sources of particle production is found to increase linearly with
multiplicity, suggesting no saturation of the number of multi-parton
interactions even in the highest multiplicity p-Pb collisions. Further, the
number scales in the intermediate multiplicity region with the number of binary
nucleon-nucleon collisions estimated with a Glauber Monte-Carlo simulation.Comment: 23 pages, 6 captioned figures, 1 table, authors from page 17,

Multi-particle azimuthal correlations in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions at the CERN Large Hadron Collider
Measurements of multi-particle azimuthal correlations (cumulants) for charged
particles in p-Pb and Pb-Pb collisions are presented. They help address the
question of whether there is evidence for global, flow-like, azimuthal
correlations in the p-Pb system. Comparisons are made to measurements from the
larger Pb-Pb system, where such evidence is established. In particular, the
second harmonic two-particle cumulants are found to decrease with multiplicity,
characteristic of a dominance of few-particle correlations in p-Pb collisions.
However, when a gap is placed to suppress such correlations,
the two-particle cumulants begin to rise at high-multiplicity, indicating the
presence of global azimuthal correlations. The Pb-Pb values are higher than the
p-Pb values at similar multiplicities. In both systems, the second harmonic
four-particle cumulants exhibit a transition from positive to negative values
when the multiplicity increases. The negative values allow for a measurement of
to be made, which is found to be higher in Pb-Pb collisions at
similar multiplicities. The second harmonic six-particle cumulants are also
found to be higher in Pb-Pb collisions. In Pb-Pb collisions, we generally find
which is indicative of a Bessel-Gaussian
function for the distribution. For very high-multiplicity Pb-Pb
collisions, we observe that the four- and six-particle cumulants become
consistent with 0. Finally, third harmonic two-particle cumulants in p-Pb and
Pb-Pb are measured. These are found to be similar for overlapping
multiplicities, when a gap is placed.Comment: 25 pages, 11 captioned figures, 3 tables, authors from page 20,
