    The Non-Mesonic Weak Decay of Double-Lambda Hypernuclei: A Microscopic Approach

    The non--mesonic weak decay of double--Λ\Lambda hypernuclei is studied within a microscopic diagrammatic approach. Besides the nucleon--induced mechanism, ΛN→nN\Lambda N\to nN, widely studied in single--Λ\Lambda hypernuclei, additional hyperon--induced mechanisms, ΛΛ→Λn\Lambda \Lambda\to \Lambda n, ΛΛ→Σ0n\Lambda \Lambda\to \Sigma^0 n and ΛΛ→Σ−p\Lambda \Lambda\to \Sigma^-p, are accessible in double--Λ\Lambda hypernuclei and are investigated here. As in previous works on single--Λ\Lambda hypernuclei, we adopt a nuclear matter formalism extended to finite nuclei via the local density approximation and a one--meson exchange weak transition potential (including the ground state pseudoscalar and vector octets mesons) supplemented by correlated and uncorrelated two--pion--exchange contributions. The weak decay rates are evaluated for hypernuclei in the region of the experimentally accessible light hypernuclei ΛΛ10^{10}_{\Lambda\Lambda}Be and ΛΛ13^{13}_{\Lambda\Lambda}B. Our predictions are compared with a few previous evaluations. The rate for the ΛΛ→Λn\Lambda \Lambda\to \Lambda n decay is dominated by KK--, K∗K^*-- and η\eta--exchange and turns out to be about 2.5\% of the free Λ\Lambda decay rate, ΓΛfree\Gamma_{\Lambda}^{\rm free}, while the total rate for the ΛΛ→Σ0n\Lambda \Lambda\to \Sigma^0 n and ΛΛ→Σ−p\Lambda \Lambda\to \Sigma^- p decays, dominated by π\pi--exchange, amounts to about 0.25\% of ΓΛfree\Gamma_{\Lambda}^{\rm free}. The experimental measurement of these decays would be essential for the beginning of a systematic study of the non--mesonic decay of strangeness −2-2 hypernuclei. This field of research could also shed light on the possible existence and nature of the HH--dibaryon.Comment: 17 pages, 2 figure

    Evidence for polarons in iron pnictides of the Ln-1111 and AE-122 families

    Examination of the electrical resistivities of iron pnictides shows that they can be accounted by conduction by polarons. Their activation energies show a linear behaviour with the critical temperatures of the spin density waves (SDW), T*, as both vary with pressure. The slope matches the ratio SDW gap to T*, while the intercept can be related to the transition temperature of the lattice distortion, T0. An adapted Landau free energy predicts the observed order of the transitions, according to which is higher, T* or T0. Simple arguments favour combined Jahn-Teller antiferromagnetic bipolarons.Comment: 14 pages with 4 Figure

    Active and Passive Quantum Erasers for Neutral Kaons

    Quantum marking and quantum erasure are discussed for the neutral kaon system. Contrary to other two-level systems, strangeness and lifetime of a neutral kaon state can be alternatively measured via an "active" or a "passive" procedure. This offers new quantum erasure possibilities.     A phenomenological model for the pressure sensitivity of the Curie temperature in hole-doped manganites

    We performed high pressure experiments on La(0.8)Ca(0.2-x)Sr(x)MnO(3) (LCSMO) (0<x< 0.2) ceramic samples in order to analyze the validity of the well known relation between the A mean ionic radius () and the Curie temperature Tc of hole-doped manganites at a fixed doping level and for doping values below the 0.3 (Mn+4/Mn+3) ratio. By considering our results and collecting others from the literature, we were able to propose a phenomenological law that considers the systematic dependence of Tc with structural and electronic parameters. This law predicts fairly well the pressure sensitivity of Tc, its dependence with the A-cation radius disorder and its evolution in the high pressure range. Considering a Double Exchange model, modified by polaronic effects, the phenomenological law obtained for Tc can be associated with the product of two terms: the polaronic modified bandwidth and an effective hole doping.Comment: 5 pages, 7 figures, corresponding author: C.     Entangled K0 anti-K0 pairs are shown to be suitable to discuss extensions and tests of Bohr's complementarity principle through the quantum marking and quantum erasure techniques suggested by M. O. Scully and K. Druehl [Phys. Rev. A 25, 2208 (1982)]. Strangeness oscillations play the role of the traditional interference pattern linked to wave-like behaviour, whereas the distinct propagation in free space of the K_S and K_L components mimics the two possible interferometric paths taken by particle-like objects.Comment: 4 RevTeX page

    A test of Local Realism with entangled kaon pairs and without inequalities

    We propose the use of entangled pairs of neutral kaons, considered as a promising tool to close the well known loopholes affecting generic Bell's inequality tests, in a specific Hardy-type experiment. Hardy's contradiction without inequalities between Local Realism and Quantum Mechanics can be translated into a feasible experiment by requiring ideal detection efficiencies for only one of the observables to be alternatively measured. Neutral kaons are near to fulfil this requirement and therefore to close the efficiency loophole.Comment: 4 RevTeX page
