Combining Models of Approximation with Partial Learning
In Gold's framework of inductive inference, the model of partial learning
requires the learner to output exactly one correct index for the target object
and only the target object infinitely often. Since infinitely many of the
learner's hypotheses may be incorrect, it is not obvious whether a partial
learner can be modifed to "approximate" the target object.
Fulk and Jain (Approximate inference and scientific method. Information and
Computation 114(2):179--191, 1994) introduced a model of approximate learning
of recursive functions. The present work extends their research and solves an
open problem of Fulk and Jain by showing that there is a learner which
approximates and partially identifies every recursive function by outputting a
sequence of hypotheses which, in addition, are also almost all finite variants
of the target function.
The subsequent study is dedicated to the question how these findings
generalise to the learning of r.e. languages from positive data. Here three
variants of approximate learning will be introduced and investigated with
respect to the question whether they can be combined with partial learning.
Following the line of Fulk and Jain's research, further investigations provide
conditions under which partial language learners can eventually output only
finite variants of the target language. The combinabilities of other partial
learning criteria will also be briefly studied.Comment: 28 page
Effect of iron on the microstructure and mechanical property of Al-Mg-Si-Mn and Al-Mg-Si diecast alloys

Copyright @ 2012 Elsevier B.V.This article has been made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund.AlāMgāSi based alloys can provide super ductility to satisfy the demands of thin wall castings in the application of automotive structure. In this work, the effect of iron on the microstructure and mechanical properties of the AlāMgāSi diecast alloys with different Mn concentrations is investigated. The CALPHAD (acronym of Calculation of Phase Diagrams) modelling with the thermodynamic properties of the multi-component AlāMgāSiāMnāFe and AlāMgāSiāFe systems is carried out to understand the role of alloying on the formation of different primary Fe-rich intermetallic compounds. The results showed that the Fe-rich intermetallic phases precipitate in two solidification stages in the high pressure die casting process: one is in the shot sleeve and the other is in the die cavity, resulting in the different morphologies and sizes. In the AlāMgāSiāMn alloys, the Fe-rich intermetallic phase formed in the shot sleeve exhibited coarse compact morphology and those formed in the die cavity were fine compact particles. Although with different morphologies, the compact intermetallics were identified as the same Ī±-AlFeMnSi phase with typical composition of Al24(Fe,Mn)6Si2. With increased Fe content, Ī²-AlFe was found in the microstructure with a long needle-shaped morphology, which was identified as Al13(Fe,Mn)4Si0.25. In the AlāMgāSi alloy, the identified Fe-rich intermetallics included the compact Ī±-AlFeSi phase with typical composition of Al8Fe2Si and the needle-shaped Ī²-AlFe phase with typical composition of Al13Fe4. Generally, the existence of iron in the alloy slightly increases the yield strength, but significantly reduces the elongation. The ultimate tensile strength maintains at similar levels when Fe contents is less than 0.5 wt%, but decreases significantly with the further increased Fe concentration in the alloys. CALPHAD modelling shows that the addition of Mn enlarges the Fe tolerance for the formation of Ī±-AlFeMnSi intermetallics and suppresses the formation of Ī²-AlFe phase in the AlāMgāSi alloys, and thus improves their mechanical properties.EPSRC and JL
Consistent picture for the electronic structure around a vortex core in iron-based superconductors
Based on a two-orbital model and taking into account the presence of the
impurity, we studied theoretically the electronic structure in the vortex core
of the iron-Pnictide superconducting materials. The vortex is pinned when the
impurity is close to the vortex core. The bound states shows up for the
unpinned vortex and are wiped out by a impurity. Our results are in good
agreement with recent experiments and present a consistent explanation for the
different electronic structure of vortex core revealed by experiments on
different materials.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure

Surface phase separation in nanosized charge-ordered manganites
Recent experiments showed that the robust charge-ordering in manganites can
be weakened by reducing the grain size down to nanoscale. Weak ferromagnetism
was evidenced in both nanoparticles and nanowires of charge-ordered manganites.
To explain these observations, a phenomenological model based on surface phase
separation is proposed. The relaxation of superexchange interaction on the
surface layer allows formation of a ferromagnetic shell, whose thickness
increases with decreasing grain size. Possible exchange bias and softening of
the ferromagnetic transition in nanosized charge-ordered manganites are
predicted.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Generation of N-qubit W state with rf-SQUID qubits by adiabatic passage
A simple scheme is presented to generate n-qubit W state with
rf-superconducting quantum interference devices (rf-SQUIDs) in cavity QED
through adiabatic passage. Because of the achievable strong coupling for
rf-SQUID qubits embedded in cavity QED, we can get the desired state with high
success probability. Furthermore, the scheme is insensitive to position
inaccuracy of the rf-SQUIDs. The numerical simulation shows that, by using
present experimental techniques, we can achieve our scheme with very high
success probability, and the fidelity could be eventually unity with the help
of dissipation.Comment: to appear in Phys. Rev.
Flux measurements in the near surface layer over a non-uniform crop surface in China
International audienceEddy covariance measurements were conducted on fluxes of moisture, heat and CO2 in a near-surface layer over a non-uniform crop surface in an agricultural ecosystem in the central plain of China from 10 June to 20 July 2002. During this period, the mean canopy height was about 0.50 m. The study site consisted of grass (10% of area), bean (15%), corn (15%) and rice (60%). Based on footprint analysis, we expected >90% of the measured flux (at a height of 4 m above ground surface) to occur within the nearest 600 m of upwind area. We examined interdiurnal variations in the components of the surface energy balance and in CO2 flux. Results show that the pattern of energy partition had no obvious variation during the season. Daytime absorption of CO2 flux by the crop canopy suddenly increased after thunderstorm events. We examined the energy budget closure and found it to be around 0.85. We compared energy partitioning for all rain-free days, and found energy imbalance was more significant for the 1~3 days after rainy events and energy components almost achieve balance for the other rain-free days. It indicated that the cold or warm rainwater infiltrating into soil made problems
