Fairguard: Harness Logic-based Fairness Rules in Smart Cities
Smart cities operate on computational predictive frameworks that collect,
aggregate, and utilize data from large-scale sensor networks. However, these
frameworks are prone to multiple sources of data and algorithmic bias, which
often lead to unfair prediction results. In this work, we first demonstrate
that bias persists at a micro-level both temporally and spatially by studying
real city data from Chattanooga, TN. To alleviate the issue of such bias, we
introduce Fairguard, a micro-level temporal logic-based approach for fair smart
city policy adjustment and generation in complex temporal-spatial domains. The
Fairguard framework consists of two phases: first, we develop a static
generator that is able to reduce data bias based on temporal logic conditions
by minimizing correlations between selected attributes. Then, to ensure
fairness in predictive algorithms, we design a dynamic component to regulate
prediction results and generate future fair predictions by harnessing logic
rules. Evaluations show that logic-enabled static Fairguard can effectively
reduce the biased correlations while dynamic Fairguard can guarantee fairness
on protected groups at run-time with minimal impact on overall performance.Comment: This paper was accepted by the 8th ACM/IEEE Conference on Internet of

Robustness of interdependent networks under targeted attack
When an initial failure of nodes occurs in interdependent networks, a cascade
of failure between the networks occurs. Earlier studies focused on random
initial failures. Here we study the robustness of interdependent networks under
targeted attack on high or low degree nodes. We introduce a general technique
and show that the {\it targeted-attack} problem in interdependent networks can
be mapped to the {\it random-attack} problem in a transformed pair of
interdependent networks. We find that when the highly connected nodes are
protected and have lower probability to fail, in contrast to single scale free
(SF) networks where the percolation threshold , coupled SF networks are
significantly more vulnerable with significantly larger than zero. The
result implies that interdependent networks are difficult to defend by
strategies such as protecting the high degree nodes that have been found useful
to significantly improve robustness of single networks.Comment: 11 pages, 2 figure

Genome-Wide Profiling of Circular RNAs in the Rapidly Growing Shoots of Moso Bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis).
Circular RNAs, including circular exonic RNAs (circRNA), circular intronic RNAs (ciRNA) and exon-intron circRNAs (EIciRNAs), are a new type of noncoding RNAs. Growing shoots of moso bamboo (Phyllostachys edulis) represent an excellent model of fast growth and their circular RNAs have not been studied yet. To understand the potential regulation of circular RNAs, we systematically characterized circular RNAs from eight different developmental stages of rapidly growing shoots. Here, we identified 895 circular RNAs including a subset of mutually inclusive circRNA. These circular RNAs were generated from 759 corresponding parental coding genes involved in cellulose, hemicellulose and lignin biosynthetic process. Gene co-expression analysis revealed that hub genes, such as DEFECTIVE IN RNA-DIRECTED DNA METHYLATION 1 (DRD1), MAINTENANCE OF METHYLATION (MOM), dicer-like 3 (DCL3) and ARGONAUTE 1 (AGO1), were significantly enriched giving rise to circular RNAs. The expression level of these circular RNAs presented correlation with its linear counterpart according to transcriptome sequencing. Further protoplast transformation experiments indicated that overexpressing circ-bHLH93 generating from transcription factor decreased its linear transcript. Finally, the expression profiles suggested that circular RNAs may have interplay with miRNAs to regulate their cognate linear mRNAs, which was further supported by overexpressing miRNA156 decreasing the transcript of circ-TRF-1 and linear transcripts of TRF-1. Taken together, the overall profile of circular RNAs provided new insight into an unexplored category of long noncoding RNA regulation in moso bamboo
Microstructure and Mechanical Performance of Graphene Nanosheets Reinforced Nickel-Based Superalloy FGH95 Composite
Graphene nanosheet (GNS)-reinforced nickel-based superalloy FGH95 (GNSs/FGH95) matrix composites are prepared via the powder metallurgy approach. Scanning electron microscopy, transmission electron microscope and static tensile tests are used to investigate the microstructure and mechanical properties of GNS-reinforced nickel-based superalloy FGH95. Mechanical properties and failure behavior at room temperature and high temperature are studied. Static tensile tests at room temperature and high temperature confirm that the strength and plasticity of GNS-reinforced FGH95 have been improved, compared to the unreinforced superalloy. The results show that with the increase of temperature, the failure behavior of GNSs/FGH95 composite changes from the interface debonding of the GNSs/matrix to the failure of the FGH95 matrix. This work suggests that GNSs/FGH95 composite has great potential to be a structural material in aero-engine fields
Facile Synthesis of Wide-Bandgap Fluorinated Graphene Semiconductors
The bandgap opening of graphene is extremely important for the expansion of the applications of graphene-based materials into optoelectronics and photonics. Current methods to open the bandgap of graphene have intrinsic drawbacks including small bandgap openings, the use hazardous/harsh chemical oxidations, and the requirement of expensive chemical-vapor deposition technologies. Herein, an eco-friendly, highly effective, low-cost, and highly scalable synthetic approach is reported for synthesizing wide-bandgap fluorinated graphene (F-graphene or or fluorographene) semiconductors under ambient conditions. In this synthesis, ionic liquids are used as the only chemical to exfoliate commercially available fluorinated graphite into single and few-layer F-graphene. Experimental and theoretical results show that the bandgap of F-graphene is largely dependent on the F coverage and configuration, and thereby can be tuned over a very wide range
Isolation and Characterization of Plant Growth-Promoting Endophytic Bacteria Paenibacillus polymyxa SK1 from Lilium lancifolium
Paenibacillus polymyxa is a plant growth-promoting rhizobacterium that has immense potential to be used as an environmentally friendly replacement of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. In the present study, Paenibacillus polymyxa SK1 was isolated from bulbs of Lilium lancifolium. The isolated endophytic strain showed antifungal activities against important plant pathogens like Botryosphaeria dothidea, Fusarium oxysporum, Botrytis cinerea, and Fusarium fujikuroi. The highest percentage of growth inhibition, i.e., 66.67 ± 2.23%, was observed for SK1 against Botryosphaeria dothidea followed by 61.19 ± 3.12%, 60.71 ± 3.53%, and 55.54 ± 2.89% against Botrytis cinerea, Fusarium fujikuroi, and Fusarium oxysporum, respectively. The metabolite profiling of ethyl acetate fraction was assessed through the UHPLC-LTQ-IT-MS/MS analysis, and putative identification was done with the aid of the GNPS molecular networking workflow. A total of 29 compounds were putatively identified which included dipeptides, tripeptides, cyclopeptides (cyclo-(Leu-Leu), cyclo(Pro-Phe)), 2-heptyl-3-hydroxy 4-quinolone, 6-oxocativic acid, anhydrobrazilic acid, 1-(5-methoxy-1H-indol-3-yl)-2-piperidin-1-ylethane-1,2-dione, octadecenoic acid, pyochelin, 15-hydroxy-5Z,8Z,11Z, 13E-eicosatetraenoic acid, (Z)-7-[(2R,3S)-3-[(2Z,5E)-Undeca-2,5-dienyl]oxiran-2-yl]hept-5-enoic acid, arginylasparagine, cholic acid, sphinganine, elaidic acid, gossypin, L-carnosine, tetrodotoxin, and ursodiol. The high antifungal activity of SK1 might be attributed to the presence of these bioactive compounds. The isolated strain SK1 showed plant growth-promoting traits such as the production of organic acids, ACC deaminase, indole-3-acetic acid (IAA), siderophores, nitrogen fixation, and phosphate solubilization. IAA production was strongly correlated with the application of exogenous tryptophan concentrations in the medium. Furthermore, inoculation of SK1 enhanced plant growth of two Lilium varieties, Tresor and White Heaven, under greenhouse condition. In the light of these findings, the P. polymyxa SK1 may be utilized as a source of plant growth promotion and disease control in sustainable agriculture
