Computational simulation of heat transfer from alternate heating sources

The alternant heat transfer induced by particle packet and gas bubbles on an object surface in a gas fluidised bed is computationally studied. The particle packet and bubble are modelled by a DPPM (double particle-layer and Porous Medium) model and a hemispherical model, respectively. Different meshing schemes are applied and different mesh sizes are used in meshing particle packet and heated object and a very large geometrical size difference between them was considered. Two parallel solver processes were proposed to perform the simulation of heat transfer for different purposes and implemented with the Fluent CFD package.<br /

Preparation of cross-linked nanoporous poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate membrane in hexagonal lyotropic liquid crystal phases

Cross-linked poly(ethylene glycol) diacrylate (PEGDA) membranes were prepared by polymerization in periodic nanostructured lyotropic liquid crystals (LLC) hexagonal phases under UV light. A series of membranes were prepared under different purification treatment conditions. Polarized light microscope was employed to determine the LLC phase texture of LLC system before and after polymerization. It is found that the LLC hexagonal structure retained to some degree after polymerization. The interior structures of final membranes were investigated with scanning electron microscope (SEM). The results suggested that purification process affect the structure retention.<br /

FEM analysis of knife penetration through woven fabrics

In this paper, the penetration of a knife through a plain woven fabric is simulated with the finite element method to understand the process of stabbing and the mechanism of fiber breakage. The model focuses on the study of the deformation of individual yarns, and the effects of their material properties and fabric structure on the stabbing resistant force. The performance of the fabric is analyzed as a response of stabbing and the stress distributions in yarn transverse and longitudinal directions. An equation derived from energy and momentum conservations of the knife is proposed to predict the depth of the knife penetration

3D hydrodynamic analysis of a biomimetic robot fish

This paper presents a three-dimensional (3D) computational fluid dynamic simulation of a biomimetic robot fish. Fluent and user-defined function (UDF) is used to define the movement of the robot fish and the Dynamic Mesh is used to mimic the fish swimming in water. Hydrodynamic analysis is done in this paper too. The aim of this study is to get comparative data about hydrodynamic properties of those guidelines to improve the design, remote control and flexibility of the underwater robot fish
