Large Language Models on Wikipedia-Style Survey Generation: an Evaluation in NLP Concepts
Large Language Models (LLMs) have achieved significant success across various
natural language processing (NLP) tasks, encompassing question-answering,
summarization, and machine translation, among others. While LLMs excel in
general tasks, their efficacy in domain-specific applications remains under
exploration. Additionally, LLM-generated text sometimes exhibits issues like
hallucination and disinformation. In this study, we assess LLMs' capability of
producing concise survey articles within the computer science-NLP domain,
focusing on 20 chosen topics. Automated evaluations indicate that GPT-4
outperforms GPT-3.5 when benchmarked against the ground truth. Furthermore,
four human evaluators provide insights from six perspectives across four model
configurations. Through case studies, we demonstrate that while GPT often
yields commendable results, there are instances of shortcomings, such as
incomplete information and the exhibition of lapses in factual accuracy
Attacking ECDSA with Nonce Leakage by Lattice Sieving: Bridging the Gap with Fourier Analysis-based Attacks
The Hidden Number Problem (HNP) has found extensive applications in side-channel attacks against cryptographic schemes, such as ECDSA and Diffie-Hellman. There are two primary algorithmic approaches to solving the HNP: lattice-based attacks and Fourier analysis-based attacks. Lattice-based attacks exhibit better efficiency and require fewer samples when sufficiently long substrings of the nonces are known. However, they face significant challenges when only a small fraction of the nonce is leaked, such as 1-bit leakage, and their performance degrades in the presence of errors.
In this paper, we address an open question by introducing an algorithmic tradeoff that significantly bridges the gap between these two approaches.
By introducing a parameter to modify Albrecht and Heninger\u27s lattice, the lattice dimension is reduced by approximately , where represents the number of leaked bits. We present a series of new methods, including the interval reduction algorithm, several predicates, and the pre-screening technique. Furthermore, we extend our algorithms to solve the HNP with erroneous input. Our attack outperforms existing state-of-the-art lattice-based attacks against ECDSA. We break several records including 1-bit and less than 1-bit leakage on a 160-bit curve, while the best previous lattice-based attack for 1-bit leakage was conducted only on a 112-bit curve
Microrollers Flow Uphill as Granular Media
Pour sand into a container and only the grains near the top surface move. The
collective motion associated with the translational and rotational energy of
the grains in a thin flowing layer is quickly dissipated as friction through
multibody interactions. Alternatively, consider what will happen to a bed of
particles if one applies a torque to each individual particle. In this paper,
we demonstrate an experimental system where torque is applied at the
constituent level through a rotating magnetic field in a dense bed of
microrollers. The net result is the grains roll uphill, forming a heap with a
negative angle of repose. Two different regimes have been identified related to
the degree of mobility or fluidization of the particles in the bulk.
Velocimetry of the near surface flowing layer reveals the collective motion of
these responsive particles scales in a similar way to flowing bulk granular
flows. A simple granular model that includes cohesion accurately predicts the
apparent negative coefficient of friction. In contrast to the response of
active or responsive particles that mimic thermodynamic principles, this system
results in macroscopic collective behavior that has the kinematics of a purely
dissipative granular system
Protective effects of resveratrol on the inhibition of hippocampal neurogenesis induced by ethanol during early postnatal life
AbstractEthanol (EtOH) exposure during early postnatal life triggers obvious neurotoxic effects on the developing hippocampus and results in long-term effects on hippocampal neurogenesis. Resveratrol (RSV) has been demonstrated to exert potential neuroprotective effects by promoting hippocampal neurogenesis. However, the effects of RSV on the EtOH-mediated impairment of hippocampal neurogenesis remain undetermined. Thus, mice were pretreated with RSV and were later exposed to EtOH to evaluate its protective effects on EtOH-mediated toxicity during hippocampal development. The results indicated that a brief exposure of EtOH on postnatal day 7 resulted in a significant impairment in hippocampal neurogenesis and a depletion of hippocampal neural precursor cells (NPCs). This effect was attenuated by pretreatment with RSV. Furthermore, EtOH exposure resulted in a reduction in spine density on the granular neurons of the dentate gyrus (DG), and the spines exhibited a less mature morphological phenotype characterized by a higher proportion of stubby spines and a lower proportion of mushroom spines. However, RSV treatment effectively reversed these responses. We further confirmed that RSV treatment reversed the EtOH-induced down-regulation of hippocampal pERK and Hes1 protein levels, which may be related to the proliferation and maintenance of NPCs. Furthermore, EtOH exposure in the C17.2 NPCs also diminished cell proliferation and activated apoptosis, which could be reversed by pretreatment of RSV. Overall, our results suggest that RSV pretreatment protects against EtOH-induced defects in neurogenesis in postnatal mice and may thus play a critical role in preventing EtOH-mediated toxicity in the developing hippocampus
PCSK9 regulates the efficacy of immune checkpoint therapy in lung cancer
Proprotein convertase subtilisin/kexin type 9 (PCSK9) secreted by tumors was reported as a deleterious factor that led to the reduction of lymphocyte infiltration and the poorer efficacy of ICIs in vivo. This study aimed to explore whether PCSK9 expression in tumor tissue could predict the response of advanced non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC) to anti-PD-1 immunotherapy and the synergistic antitumor effect of the combination of the PCSK9 inhibitor with the anti-CD137 agonist. One hundred fifteen advanced NSCLC patients who received anti-PD-1 immunotherapy were retrospectively studied with PCSK9 expression in baseline NSCLC tissues detected by immunohistochemistry (IHC). The mPFS of the PCSK9lo group was significantly longer than that of the PCSK9hi group [8.1 vs. 3.6 months, hazard ratio (HR): 3.450; 95% confidence interval (CI), 2.166-5.496]. A higher objective response rate (ORR) and a higher disease control rate (DCR) were observed in the PCSK9lo group than in the PCSK9hi group (54.4% vs. 34.5%, 94.7% vs. 65.5%). Reduction and marginal distribution of CD8+ T cells were observed in PCSK9hi NSCLC tissues. Tumor growth was retarded by the PCSK9 inhibitor and the anti-CD137 agonist alone in the Lewis lung carcinoma (LLC) mice model and further retarded by the PCSK9 inhibitor in combination with the CD137 agonist with long-term survival of the host mice with noticeable increases of CD8+ and GzmB+ CD8+ T cells and reduction of Tregs. Together, these results suggested that high PCSK9 expression in baseline tumor tissue was a deleterious factor for the efficacy of anti-PD-1 immunotherapy in advanced NSCLC patients. The PCSK9 inhibitor in combination with the anti-CD137 agonist could not only enhance the recruitment of CD8+ and GzmB+ CD8+ T cells but also deplete Tregs, which may be a novel therapeutic strategy for future research and clinical practice
Electrocaloric effect in ferroelectric ceramics with point defects
The electrocaloric effect has drawn much attention due to its potential application in cooling devices. A negative electrocaloric effect is predicted to be induced in defect-doped ferroelectrics by computational results [A. Grunebohm and T. Nishimatsu, Phys. Rev. B 93, 134101 (2016) and Ma et al., Phys. Rev. B 94, 094113 (2016)], but it need to be confirmed by experimental results. In this work, we prepared a 1mol. % Mn-doped Pb(Zr0.2,Ti0.8)O3 ceramics (Pb((Zr0.2,Ti0.8)0.99,Mn0.01)O3), and the electrocaloric effect of the defect-containing ferroelectric ceramics has been investigated by both direct and indirect methods. The indirect method shows a similar negative electrocaloric effect signal as the computational results predicted, while the direct method gives a positive electrocaloric effect. The absence of the negative electrocaloric effect obtained by the direct method may originate from: (a) the unavailability and the improper prediction of the Maxwell relation, (b) an improper assumption of fixed defects in the computational models, and (c) the offset of heat loss due to the application of a large electric field. In addition, we find a giant positive electrocaloric effect of 0.55K at room temperature in the aged ceramics where no phase transition takes place. We attribute this abnormal electrocaloric effect to the restoration force of the defect dipoles. Our results not only provide insights into the origin of the negative electrocaloric effect, but also offer opportunities for the design of electrocaloric materials
Further Validation of the Inventory of CallousUnemotional Traits in Chinese Children: Cross-Informants Invariance and Longitudinal Invariance
The present study examined the factor structure and measurement invariance of the shortened versions of the Inventory
of Callous–Unemotional Traits (ICU) with data from multiple informants. Five short versions of the ICU proposed in
previous studies were tested and compared through confirmatory factor analysis. The measurement invariance across
different informants (i.e., self-report, parent-report, and teacher-report) and longitudinal measurement invariance for
the resulting best-fitting model were tested thoroughly. Results indicated that a shortened form that consists of 11 items
(ICU-11) to assess callousness and uncaring factors had excellent overall fit. Moreover, the ICU-11 was invariant across
informant and occasions. However, the ICU-11 was not without limitations; the internal consistency α for the uncaring
factor with self-report scores was marginal. In conclusion, our findings suggest that the ICU-11 was an excellent fit for our
data and displayed measurement invariance across informants and over time. The ICU-11 may be a promising assessment
tool that could be used in research to assess callous–uncaring traits in Chinese children.The author(s) disclosed receipt of the following financial support
