Sustainable IPO Proceeds' Disclosure and Survival of Companies

    Get PDF
We examine the sustainable disclosure of IPO proceeds on 423 companies’ survival in the Malaysian market from 2000 to 2014. Using survival analysis, we find that the companies’ survival can be predicted by the proportion of IPO proceeds and their time frame, with debt repayment being the critical driver of companies’ survival. We provide empirical support for securities regulators to include strategic use and timeframe of utilization of IPO proceeds in their information disclosure requirements to protect investors’ interests and improve companies’ post-IPO survival. Malaysia faces higher bankruptcy cases involving personal bankruptcies among Malaysians despite increasing the threshold of a personal bankruptcy declaration. This research aims to study the factors influencing Malaysian personal bankruptcy, utilizing the macroeconomic aggregates as the determinants, which are inflation rate (IR), unemployment rate (UE), lending interest rate (LR), Gross Domestic Product (GDP) per capita and household final consumption expenditure (HFCE). This study uses a quantitative approach and time series analysis which includes a group of data from 1985 to 2021, i.e., 37 years of observations. The sample series of time frames is sufficient to assess the long-term relationship between the macroeconomic perspectives and personal bankruptcy. The data was analyzed using multiple linear regression analysis. The finding shows a significant negative relationship between Malaysian personal bankruptcy and unemployment rate, lending interest rate and household final consumption expenditure. In contrast, there is an insignificant relationship between Malaysian personal bankruptcy and the inflation rat

This research aims to examine the differences in the determinants of performance between Shariah-compliant and non-Shariah-compliant firms. The changes in the Shariah screening technique in Malaysia since 2013 have significantly affected how firms that comply with the Shariah principles, as opposed to non-compliant firms, leading to the motivation of this research being conducted. This research employs panel data regression analysis to test its hypotheses. Compiling data from 142 manufacturing firms (71 Shariah-compliant and 71 non-Shariah-compliant firms) from 2012 to 2021, this research found that Shariah-compliant firm performance is significantly influenced by firm size, leverage, tangibility and efficiency. In contrast, non-Shariah-compliant firm performance is significantly influenced by leverage, tangibility, working capital and efficiency. This research contributes to relevant parties, such as the manufacturing firms and policymakers, in providing insights on the most relevant indicators affecting firm performance, specifically those in the manufacturing sector

Intended Use of IPO Proceeds and Survival of Listed Companies in Malaysia

In the context of Malaysian companies’ survival, the potential role of intended use of proceeds as an influential factor remains unfamiliar. This study examines the link between the intended use of IPO proceeds and the survival of 423 Malaysian listed companies over the period of 2000–2014. This study distinguishes the use of IPO proceeds into three segregations: growth opportunities, debt repayment, and working capital. Employing the Accelerated Failure Time (AFT) survival model, the overall evidence shows a statistically significant effect of the intended use of IPO proceeds for growth opportunities and debt repayment on companies’ post-IPO survival. Furthermore, company survival was found to be consistently improved when they allocated less than 50% of their IPO proceeds, regardless of the purposes (growth, repay debt or general). These results highlight the importance of the intended use of IPO proceeds on the survival of newly listed companies, and provide insights for policymakers on the management of IPO proceeds for long-term survival
