Ensiling Safflower (\u3ci\u3eCarthamus Tinctorius\u3c/i\u3e) As an Alternative Winter Forage Crop in Israel

Israel is a subtropical country in which the rainy season is in winter, with frequent droughts. Wheat is the major winter forage crop in Israel, along with legumes as rotation crops. Alternative forage crops are sought that would be suitable for semi-arid areas. Safflower (Carthamus tinctorius) is usually grown as a source for oil and pigments but spineless cultivars could be used as fodder. Leshem et al. (2001) reported DM yields up to 22 t/ha and high DM digestibility when used for heifers. When safflower silage substituted maize and wheat silage in the rations of lactating cows, milk yields and milk fat were similar in the two groups (Landau et al., 2004). Safflower was preserved satisfactorily by ensiling in mini-silos (Weinberg et al., 2002). However, on some farm scale trials, safflower silages spoiled upon aerobic exposure. The objective of the current experiments was to further study the ensiling characteristics of safflower

Technology entrepreneurship as a factor of sustainable energy in smart cities

The implementation of intelligent engineering infrastructure in cities necessitates the involvement of a large number of various innovative organizations. The experience of pioneer smart cities and global companies that are developing smart technologies shows that the key role in that process is played by technology entrepreneurs, i.e., a community of innovators who are capable of rapidly creating breakthrough solutions, launching them into the market, adopting and commercializing them. This study analyzes the theoretical features and current essential tasks of tech entrepreneurship as a business phenomenon and ways and means for technology entrepreneurship by corporations and independent start-ups. Exploring the case of the energy sector in smart cities which presents a growing market for technology solutions, the authors reveal the structure of the main segments of technology entrepreneurship, including electric vehicles and charging infrastructure, smart metering, telemetering, demand side management, distributed generation and micro-grids. Examples are described of tech entrepreneurship projects that were implemented by energy and telecom companies with the purpose of making urban energy smarter and more sustainable. © 2020 WIT Press. The work was supported by Act 211 of the Government of the Russian Federation, contract No. 02.A03.21.0006

The article describes the key trends in education for the IT and radio electronics sectors, considers the comparative analysis of approaches to organization of scientific and educational activities in 30 foreign and domestic universities leading in subject ratings of QS Computer Science & Information Systems and Engineering – Electrical & Electronic. Characteristics of the trends are: • close and constantly increasing integration of educational and scientific fields of activity, which is reflected in the emergence of interdisciplinary educational programs, linking the educational process to research in breakthrough areas of knowledge and the formation of specific university ecosystems aimed at leadership in specific technologies; • the variety of forms of organization of the educational process, the orientation towards modularity, individuality and continuity, which are actively used in the promotion of educational services; • the general backlog of Russian universities from IT practice and expectations of the real sector. The research methodology included analysis of the content and models for the implementation of educational products, expert opinions on the requirements for the formation of IT professionals. As a result, disparities between current industry trends, the current situation in education and demands of the real sector were defined. In the context of the example of a number of master’s programs developed at the Institute of Radioelectronics and Information Technologies of the Ural Federal University, a mechanism for integrating science, education and consulting in order to develop highly-demanded interdisciplinary educational products has been demonstrated. The results of the research can be used by domestic and foreign universities working in IT-segments, to increase competitiveness and implement strategic scientific and educational initiatives.

Fate of Escherichia coli during Ensiling of Wheat and Corn

A recombinant Escherichia coli strain carrying a plasmid with an antibiotic resistance marker and expressing the green fluorescent protein was inoculated at a concentration of 3.8 × 10(8) CFU/g into direct-cut wheat (348 g of dry matter kg(−1)), wilted wheat (450 g of dry matter kg(−1)), and corn (375 g of dry matter kg(−1)). The forages were ensiled in mini-silos. The treatments included control (no E. coli added), application of tagged E. coli, and delayed sealing of the inoculated wheat. Three silos per treatment were sampled on predetermined dates, and the numbers of E. coli were determined on Chromocult TBX medium with or without kanamycin. Colonies presumptively identified as E. coli were also tested for fluorescence activity. Addition of E. coli at the time of ensiling resulted in a more rapid decrease in the pH but had almost no effect on the chemical composition of the final silages or their aerobic stability. E. coli disappeared from the silages when the pH decreased below 5.0. It persisted longer in silages of wilted wheat, in which the pH declined more slowly. Control silages of all crops also contained bacteria, presumptively identified as E. coli, that were resistant to the antibiotic, which suggests that some epiphytic strains are naturally resistant to antibiotics
