Factors associated with postpartum depressive symptomatology in Brazil: The Birth in Brazil National Research Study, 2011/2012
Background: Depression is one of the most common postpartum mental disorders. Many sociodemographic and individuals risk factors are associated with maternal depression but the impact of high levels of birth intervention is unclear. The Brazilian context is characterized by excessive intervention and frequent non-compliance with recommended obstetric protocols. This study therefore examined the impact of sociodemographic, individual, and obstetric risk factors in postpartum depression.
Methods: The Birth in Brazil research study is a national study of 23,894 postpartum women. Information about depression was obtained by telephone interview at 6 to 18 months after birth and was measured using the Edinburgh Postnatal Depression Scale.
Results: The prevalence of probable cases of depression was 26.3%. A multivariate model identified significant sociodemographic and individual risk factors as: brown skin color (OR = 1.15 CI 1.01-1.31), lower economic class (OR=1.70 CI 1.41-2.06), alcohol use (OR= 1.41 CI 1.09-1.84) and a history of mental disorders (OR= 3.13 CI 1.80-5.44). Significant obstetric factors were unplanned pregnancy (OR=1.22 CI 1.05-1.43 for wanted later and OR= 1.38 CI 1.20-1.60 for never wanted), multiparity (OR=1.97 CI 1.58-2.47 for 3 or more children), and poor care during birth (OR= 2.02 CI 1.28-3.20) or of the newborn (OR=2.16 CI 1.51-3.10). Obstetric interventions and complications were not associated with maternal depression.
Limitations: Depression was measured only once so we are not able to examine the course over time. The associational and reverse causality cannot be ruled out for some variables.
Conclusions: The prevalence of postpartum depression is high in Brazilian women six months after birth. Poor care of women and babies during birth is more important in postpartum depression than physical obstetric or neonatal intervention and complications
As articulações avaliadas foram as interfalângicas distal (IFD) e proximal (IFP), metacarpo-falângica (MCF), metatarso-falângica (MTF), tarso-metatársica (TMT) e intertársicas distal (ITD) e proximal (ITP) e tíbio-társica (TT).

Solving the Shortest Vector Problem in Lattices Faster Using Quantum Search
By applying Grover's quantum search algorithm to the lattice algorithms of
Micciancio and Voulgaris, Nguyen and Vidick, Wang et al., and Pujol and
Stehl\'{e}, we obtain improved asymptotic quantum results for solving the
shortest vector problem. With quantum computers we can provably find a shortest
vector in time , improving upon the classical time
complexity of of Pujol and Stehl\'{e} and the of Micciancio and Voulgaris, while heuristically we expect to find a
shortest vector in time , improving upon the classical time
complexity of of Wang et al. These quantum complexities
will be an important guide for the selection of parameters for post-quantum
cryptosystems based on the hardness of the shortest vector problem.Comment: 19 page
Suppression of a charge density wave ground state in high magnetic fields: spin and orbital mechanisms
The charge density wave (CDW) transition temperature in the quasi-one
dimensional (Q1D) organic material of (Per)Au(mnt) is relatively low
(TCDW = 12 K). Hence in a mean field BCS model, the CDW state should be
completely suppressed in magnetic fields of order 30 - 40 T. To explore this
possibility, the magnetoresistance of (Per)Au(mnt) was investigated in
magnetic fields to 45 T for 0.5 K < T < 12 K. For fields directed along the Q1D
molecular stacking direction, TCDW decreases with field, terminating at about ~
37 T for temperatures approaching zero. Results for this field orientation are
in general agreement with theoretical predictions, including the field
dependence of the magnetoresistance and the energy gap, .
However, for fields tilted away from the stacking direction, orbital effects
arise above 15 T that may be related to the return of un-nested Fermi surface
sections that develop as the CDW state is suppressed. These findings are
consistent with expectations that quasi-one dimensional metallic behavior will
return outside the CDW phase boundary.Comment: 12 pages, 5 figure
Nucleation phenomena in protein folding: The modulating role of protein sequence
For the vast majority of naturally occurring, small, single domain proteins
folding is often described as a two-state process that lacks detectable
intermediates. This observation has often been rationalized on the basis of a
nucleation mechanism for protein folding whose basic premise is the idea that
after completion of a specific set of contacts forming the so-called folding
nucleus the native state is achieved promptly. Here we propose a methodology to
identify folding nuclei in small lattice polymers and apply it to the study of
protein molecules with chain length N=48. To investigate the extent to which
protein topology is a robust determinant of the nucleation mechanism we compare
the nucleation scenario of a native-centric model with that of a sequence
specific model sharing the same native fold. To evaluate the impact of the
sequence's finner details in the nucleation mechanism we consider the folding
of two non- homologous sequences. We conclude that in a sequence-specific model
the folding nucleus is, to some extent, formed by the most stable contacts in
the protein and that the less stable linkages in the folding nucleus are solely
determined by the fold's topology. We have also found that independently of
protein sequence the folding nucleus performs the same `topological' function.
This unifying feature of the nucleation mechanism results from the residues
forming the folding nucleus being distributed along the protein chain in a
similar and well-defined manner that is determined by the fold's topological
features.Comment: 10 Figures. J. Physics: Condensed Matter (to appear
