    The imaging for the the successful bio-communication: ORBS Brand

    Producing accessible communication based on scientific research usually involves a great deal of effort in translating complex concepts into a non professional oriented information, but it is only through widely accessible data that knowledge dissemination have stronger repercussions in society. In concordance to this statement, the CNR IAMC and the “Accademia di Belle Arti di Palermo” collaborated in the work frame of the "Information, dissemination and communication system of the Biodiversity Observatory of Sicily” project, a synergistic interaction between science and art. The researchers held biodiversity seminars to the Academy students, involving 19 professorships, aiming to increase the knowledge degree and awareness on the biodiversity, thus stimulating their creativity. One of the main activities carried out during this collaboration was the conceptualization and designing of the Biodiversity Observatory brand, with the representation of biodiversity as the main briefing. The winning proposal was chosen between 13 projects by popular vote, with the participation of more than 800 students and CNR researchers. The branding is a representation of the environment with the use of different animal silhouettes as a symbol of biodiversity. The elements are arranged on a spiral grid suggesting movement, a current that raises deep, nutrient-rich waters to the ocean surface. Extremely evocative and appealing, the logotype has become an integral part of the Observatory's identity, and it's been profusely applied over the years on communication and divulgative materials, website, exhibitions, and memorabilia. Involving such a large number of students and their social groups (family, friends, and etcetera) meant giving the citizens a leading role in an important activity. Participation of the public in the creation of the graphic identity of a key structure in their territory resulted in a dramatic increase of sensitization on the biodiversity and environmental cause and participation in divulgation activities in the following years

    Defining the minimum clinically important difference (MCID) in the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS) in patients undergoing total hip and knee arthroplasty

    Introduction: Total hip (THA) and knee (TKA) arthroplasty are effective procedures, but whose success depends on various factors, including patients' genetics, sociocultural environments, and psychological factors. Patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) provide objective health status outcomes measurements, whose lowest significant variation is detected by the minimum clinically important difference (MCID). Hypothesis: We aimed to find the MCID scores for the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), HADS-A, and HADS-D in a cohort of individuals undergoing THA or TKA. Patients and methods: We enrolled 88 patients suffering from osteoarthritis (43 undergoing THA, and 45 TKA) by administering HADS, SF-12 and WOMAC at baseline and then with a 12-month prospective follow-up. The MCID for HADS, HADS-A, and HADS-D was calculated using the distribution-based approach, according to various techniques (0.5 standard deviation (0.5 SD), the standard error of measurement (SEM), the effect size (ES), and the minimum detectable change (MDC). Results: The analysis of HADS, HADS-A, and HADS-D scores revealed clinically significant improvements in symptoms in patients who underwent THA and TKA. The MCID range values were determined to be between 2.7-8.5 for the HADS, 1.4-4.4 for the HADS-A, and 1.5-4.8 for the HADS-D in the group of patients undergoing THA, and 2.1-6.7 for the HADS, 1.2-3.8 for the HADS-A, and 1.1-3.6 for the HADS-D in the TKA group. Discussion: The study determined significant improvement in all scores applying MCID analysis, which can aid physicians in interpreting anxiety and depression scores and developing both preoperative and postoperative procedures to enhance outcomes for patients undergoing THA and TKA.     Training-Induced Muscle Fatigue with a Powered Lower-Limb Exoskeleton: A Preliminary Study on Healthy Subjects

    Powered lower-limb exoskeletons represent a promising technology for helping the upright stance and gait of people with lower-body paralysis or severe paresis from spinal cord injury. The powered lower-limb exoskeleton assistance can reduce the development of lower-limb muscular fatigue as a risk factor for spasticity. Therefore, measuring powered lower-limb exoskeleton training-induced fatigue is relevant to guiding and improving such technology’s development. In this preliminary study, thirty healthy subjects (age 23.2 ± 2.7 years) performed three motor tasks: (i) walking overground (WO), (ii) treadmill walking (WT), (iii) standing and sitting (STS) in three separate exoskeleton-based training sessions of 60 min each. The changes in the production of lower-limb maximal voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) were assessed for knee and ankle dorsiflexion and extension before and after the three exoskeleton-based trained motor tasks. The MVIC forces decreased significantly after the three trained motor tasks except for the ankle dorsiflexion. However, no significant interaction was found between time (before-, and after-training) and the training sessions except for the knee flexion, where significant fatigue was induced by WO and WT trained motor tasks. The results of this study pose the basis to generate data useful for a better approach to the exoskeleton-based training. The STS task leads to a lower level of muscular fatigue, especially for the knee flexor muscles

    Postoperative psychological factors and quality of life but not shoulder brace adherence affect clinical outcomes after arthroscopic rotator cuff repair

    Background: Despite the high prevalence, there is no consensus for postsurgical management after rotator cuff repair. We aimed to assess the impact of psychological well-being on patients who underwent rotator cuff repair. We also investigated correlations and possible predictors between patient demographics and adherence to the use of the shoulder brace and outcomes in terms of shoulder functionality and quality of life. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study with prospective data collection enrolling 120 consecutive patients who underwent shoulder arthroscopy for rotator cuff tear repair. Each patient was clinically evaluated after a mean follow-up of 24.2 (±9.8) months using 1) the Disability of the Arm, Shoulder and Hand (DASH) scale, 2) the Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale (HADS), 3) the Rotator Cuff Quality of Life (RC-QoL), 4) the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS), and 5) the Medical Adherence Measure (MAM). Results: The final sample consisted of 100 patients (45 female, 45%) averaging 60.9 (±8.5) years. The average brace wearing time was 3.4 (±0.6) weeks, with an adherence superior to 80% in 84% of cases, and 96% of patients were living with family members. The mean postoperative DASH scores were 20.1 (±16.7), 23.4 (±25), and 18.9 (±21.5) for the general, work, and sport sections, respectively. The mean MAM score reached 72.5 (± 14.2) points, and the RC-QoL mean score was 30.4% (±20.5). The HADS-A and HADS-D scores' continuous mean values were 5.1 (±3.4) and 3.9 (±3.6), respectively. The DASH, HADS-A, HADS-D, and RC-QoL scores directly correlated with each other, and all these questionnaires directly correlated with the VAS scores. Moreover, we found a direct correlation (r=0.204, p=0.033) between the female sex and adherence to the brace and a direct correlation (r=0.242, p=0.015) between adherence to the brace and the number of weeks it was worn according to the medical recommendation. A correlation between lower educational qualifications and poorer outcomes was found. No correlation emerged between adherence to the brace and functional results. According to the regression analysis, diabetes was found to be a predictor of worse postoperative DASH scores (ÎČ=0,245, p=0,028). Conclusion: A lower perceived quality of life was associated with worse functional results, anxiety and depression symptoms, and pain after rotator cuff repair surgery. The adherence to the use of the shoulder brace was associated with the female sex and a longer prognosis, but no correlation emerged between adherence to the brace and functional outcomes

    Antidepressants and Vertebral and Hip Risk Fracture: An Updated Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

    Although antidepressant drugs appear to play an active role in increasing fracture risk, their weight is still unclear. We conducted a PRISMA compliant systematic review and meta-analysis through PubMed/Scopus/Cochrane libraries and registered with PROSPERO (registration number CRD42021254006) to investigate the relationship between antidepressant drugs categories, including SSRIs, SNRIs, and TCAs, and the risk of hip and vertebral fractures. After screening 3122 items, we finally found 26 papers for qualitative analysis and 11 for quantitative synthesis. A total of 15,209,542 adult and elderly patients were identified, with a mean follow-up of 51 months and a major prevalence of women. We identified results largely for SSRIs, with only a small amount of data for SNRIs, TCAs, and NaSSA. No data were found among the most recent categories of antidepressants, such as vortioxetine and esketamine. All included studies reported hip fractures, while three of them also included vertebral fractures. Overall, we observed a significant effect of SSRIs on fracture risk with a mean effect of 0.98 (95% CI = 0.75–1.20). This meta-analysis reveals that the use of SSRIs increases the risk of fractures. Clinicians’ awareness in antidepressant prescription should optimize their potential while reducing this risk

    The Order-Parameter Symmetry and Fermi Surface Topology of 122 Fe-Based Superconductors: A Point-Contact Andreev-Reflection Study

    We report on the results of directional point-contact Andreev-reflection (PCAR) measurements in Ba(Fe_{1−x}Co_{x} )_{2}As_{2} single crystals and epitaxial c-axis oriented films with x = 0.08 as well as in Ca(Fe_{1−x}Co_{x})_{2}As_{2} single crystals with x = 0.06. The PCAR spectra are analyzed within the two-band 3D version of the Blonder-Tinkham-Klapwijk model for Andreev reflection we recently developed, and that makes use of an analytical expression for the Fermi surface that mimics the one calculated within the Density-Functional Theory (DFT). The spectra in Ca(Fe_{0.94}Co_{0.06})_{2}As_{2} unambiguously demonstrate the presence of nodes or zeros in the small gap. In Ba(Fe_{0.92}Co_{0.08})_{2}As_{2}, the ab-plane spectra in single crystals can be fitted by assuming two nodeless gaps, but this model fails to fit the c-axis ones in epitaxial films. All these results are discussed in comparison with recent theoretical predictions about the occurrence of accidental 3D nodes and the presence of "hot spots" in the gaps of 122 compound

    Pseudoalteromonas haloplanktis TAC125 produces 4-hydroxybenzoic acid that induces pyroptosis in human A459 lung adenocarcinoma cells

    In order to exploit the rich reservoir of marine cold-adapted bacteria as a source of bioactive metabolites, ethyl acetate crude extracts of thirteen polar marine bacteria were tested for their antiproliferative activity on A549 lung epithelial cancer cells. The crude extract from Pseudoalteromonas haloplanktis TAC125 was the most active in inhibiting cell proliferation. Extensive bioassay-guided purification and mass spectrometric characterization allowed the identification of 4-hydroxybenzoic acid (4-HBA) as the molecule responsible for this bioactivity. We further demonstrate that 4-HBA inhibits A549 cancer cell proliferation with an IC50 value ≀ 1 ÎŒg ml−1, and that the effect is specific, since the other two HBA isomers (i.e. 2-HBA and 3-HBA) were unable to inhibit cell proliferation. The effect of 4-HBA is also selective since treatment of normal lung epithelial cells (WI-38) with 4-HBA did not affect cell viability. Finally, we show that 4-HBA is able to activate, at the gene and protein levels, a specific cell death signaling pathway named pyroptosis. Accordingly, the treatment of A549 cells with 4-HBA induces the transcription of (amongst others) caspase-1, IL1ÎČ, and IL18 encoding genes. Studies needed for the elucidation of mode of action of 4-HBA will be instrumental in depicting novel details of pyroptosis
