    Characterisation and outcome of idiopathic pyogranulomatous lymphadenitis in 64 English springer spaniel dogs

    Objectives To describe the history, clinicopathological abnormalities, diagnostic imaging findings, lymph node cytological/histological appearance, treatment and outcome of English springer spaniels diagnosed with idiopathic pyogranulomatous lymphadenitis. Materials and Methods In this retrospective UK‐based multicentre study, 64 dogs were recruited from 10 referral centres, 32 first‐opinion practices and three histopathology/cytology laboratories, between 2010 and 2016. Results The median age at presentation was 6 years (range: 0.17 to 11.75). Neutered females were frequently affected. Pyrexia (83.8%), peripheral lymphadenomegaly (78.4%), dermatological lesions (72.9%), lethargy (67.6%), hyporexia (54%), diarrhoea (29.7%), coughing (24.3%), epistaxis, sneezing or nasal discharge (21.6%), ocular signs (21.6%) and vomiting (16.2%) were reported in dogs for which the history and physical examination records were available. Popliteal (45.3%), superficial cervical (35.9%) and submandibular (37.5%) lymphadenomegaly were frequently reported. Haematology and serum biochemistry revealed non‐specific changes. When undertaken, testing for infectious diseases was negative in all cases. Lymph node cytology, histopathology or both demonstrated mixed inflammatory (27%), pyogranulomatous (24%), neutrophilic (20%) or granulomatous (11%) lymphadenitis. Treatment details were available for 38 dogs, with 34 receiving prednisolone for a median duration of 15 weeks (range: 1 to 28 weeks). A good to excellent clinical response was reported in all but one case. Ten dogs relapsed after discontinuing prednisolone. Clinical Significance Idiopathic pyogranulomatous lymphadenitis should be considered as a differential diagnosis for lymphadenopathy and pyrexia in English springer spaniels. The characteristics of the disease, absence of identifiable infectious aetiology and response to glucocorticoid therapy suggest an immune‐mediated aetiology

    Maize (Zea mays L.) yield and aflatoxin accumulation responses to exogenous glycinebetaine application

    Abstract Exogenously applied glycinebetaine (GB) accumulates at high levels in maize (Zea mays L.). Under water deficit and high temperature conditions GB application produces yield benefits. These sub-optimum conditions often result in high levels of aflatoxin accumulation which reduces grain quality. A 3-year (2008, 2009 and 2010) field experiment was conducted to determine the effects of GB on maize yield and aflatoxin accumulation. Weekly and alternate weekly GB application increased plant biomass by 10 and 13%, respectively. Net photosynthesis increased by 6% with GB application; however, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate and electron transport rate were not significantly affected. Grain yield increased by 6 and 13% with GB applied alternate weekly and weekly, respectively, over control plots averaged over years. GB application resulted in a trend of reduced aflatoxin accumulation in inoculated ears compared with non-inoculated controls in 2009 and 2010; however, inherent field and sampling variation did not allow us to conclude statistically any advantage attributable to GB application. We can conclude that GB did not significantly reduce aflatoxin production in the inoculated treatments

    POTENTIAL FOR ECO- TOURISM AS A SUSTAINABLE APPROACH TO UTILIZE RESOURCES IN UP-COUNTRY TEA ESTA TES IN SRI LANKA

    In the context of tea industry in Sri Lanka, ecotourism has been recognized asan economically viable, environmentally friendly, and socially acceptablenon-crop diversification mechanism to increase profits according to AsianDevelopment Bank report, 2000.The purpose of this study was to assess the potential for ecotourism inupcountry tea plantations in Sri Lanka. Six estates, namely: (1) Hellbodda;(2) Kaloogala; (3) Melfort; (4) Rothschild; (5) Sanquhar, and (6) Sogama thatare located in the Pussellawa plantation sub district have been selected as thecases.Collection of data was characterized by: (1) a field survey at each location toidentify the availability of potential resources for ecotourism (e.g. attractions,infrastructure); (2) a community survey with the estate households; (3) aseries of personnel interviews with the estate management, and (4)questionnaire-based surveys with potential local and foreign tourists to thesesites.The information collected through the field, community, and managementsurveys were used to develop an index - "Tourism Potential Index" (TPI),that explain the capacity of each estate to develop ecotourism. The resultsbased on the TPI suggest that the best location for ecotourism was theRothschild followed by Hellbodda, and Sogama. The results also show thatabout 75% of estate community was in favor of implementing an ecotourismproject, and about 84% and 78% of foreign and local tourists, respectively,are willing to visit such a project. The results highlight the necessity ofimplementing sustainable alternative projects to enhance the quality of life ofthe estate community.

    Viable approach towards the sustainable utilization of Negombo lagoon

    Ncgombo lagoon is a shallow coastal water body located on the west coast of Sri Lanka with vitaleconomic importance. It has had a long association with the fisheries industry of the country. Duringthe past 25 years development activities associated with the fisheries industry in Negornbo lagoonhave been taken place without due consideration to its aquatic environment. To ensure sustainablemanagement of the Negornbo lagoon it is imperative to conserve the natural habitats and extract onlythe sustainable fish yield, which does not exceed the reproductive capacity of the lagoon.In this study an attempt was made to identi fy the major factors that determine the use of illegal fishingmethods which disturb the sustainable utilization of the lagoon, to examine the factors that determinefishing income of the fisherman and to explore the contribution of the Special Area Management(SAM) project in order to reduce illegal fishingThe results highlight that the fishing methods employed in Negombo lagoon are significantly determinedby the participation to the awareness programmes of the project, initial capital requirement and costof fishing. This study further reveals that the fishing income of the fishermen is significantly determinedby the method of fishing used, education level and fishing experience of the fishermen.

    Fungal diversity notes 1512-1610: taxonomic and phylogenetic contributions on genera and species of fungal taxa

    This article is the 14th in the Fungal Diversity Notes series, wherein we report 98 taxa distributed in two phyla, seven classes, 26 orders and 50 families which are described and illustrated. Taxa in this study were collected from Australia, Brazil, Burkina Faso, Chile, China, Cyprus, Egypt, France, French Guiana, India, Indonesia, Italy, Laos, Mexico, Russia, Sri Lanka, Thailand, and Vietnam. There are 59 new taxa, 39 new hosts and new geographical distributions with one new combination.     Performance Evaluation of Coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) Nurseries in Kurunegala District of Sri Lanka

    Coconut (Cocos nucifera L.) is the most widely cultivated plantation crop in Sri Lanka, occupying about 416,000 ha of the total cultivated area. Success of establishment of coconut plantation starts with the production of good quality planting materials. Providing high quality seedlings for coconut cultivation has become a challenge to the development of coconut industry in Sri Lanka. Kurunegala is identified as the main coconut growing district in Sri Lanka and 21 established nurseries fulfill the seedlings requirement. These nurseries are categorised in to four categories as Coconut Research Institute Recommended Nurseries (CRIRN), Coconut Cultivation Board Seedling Nurseries (CCBSN), Coconut Cultivation Board Model Garden Nurseries (CCBMGN)and Private Nurseries (PVTN). Formulating a strategic plan for development of high quality seedlings is vital. This study was conducted with the general objective of evaluating the performance of coconut nurseries. This was fulfilled with the specific objectives of identifying the key variables associated with nursery performances in different nurseries and to develop an index(Coconut Nursery Performance Index, CNPI) to quantify the performance and finally rank the estates. In order to investigate the performance of coconut nurseries in Kurunegala district, ten (10). variables were identified namely cost of Production (COP), out turn percentage, land area, labour units, managers’ educational qualifications, managers’ experience, degree of mechanisation,availability of irrigation technology, distance from main road, and infrastructure. Data were collected using a semi-structured pretested questionnaire from 21 nurseries in Kurunegala district. The developed index (CNPI) was used to quantify the performance of the different categories of coconut nurseries. According to the developed performance index, nursery categories CRIN, PVTN, CCBN and CMGN showed the percentages of performance as 22%, 20%, 29% and 29% respectively in Kurunegala district. The lowest COP was recorded in Ibbagamuwa nursery and the highest COP was recorded in Kumari nursery. Lower trend was observed in purchasing coconut seedlings from PVTN. Higher out turn percentage was found in Dodangaslanda, Nikaweratiya and Ibbagamuwa nurseries. In contrast, the lowest out turn percentage was recorded in Melsiripura nursery. It is highlighted that the high education level and experience of managers, availability of new irrigation technology and availability of infrastructures, land area, degree of mechanisation and sufficient labours has significantly contributed in achieving higher performances in coconut nurseries. At the same time, breeding of health information silos is an unstoppable and relentless exercise. Information security and privacy concerns are therefore major barriers in the eHealth socio-eco system. We proposed Information Accountability as a measurable human factor that should eliminate and mitigate security concerns. Information accountability measures would be practicable and feasible if legislative requirements are also embedded. In this context, information accountability constitutes a key component for the development of effective information technology requirements for health information system. Our conceptual approach to measuring human factors related to information accountability in eHealth is presented in this paper with some limitations

    Power buffer with model predictive control for stability of vehicular power systems with constant power loads

    Electrification of vehicular systems has gained increased momentum in recent years with particular attention to constant power loads (CPLs). Since a CPL potentially threatens system stability, stability analysis of hybrid electric vehicle with CPLs becomes necessary. A new power buffer configuration with battery is introduced to mitigate the effect of instability caused by CPLs. Model predictive control (MPC) is applied to regulate the power buffer to decouple source and load dynamics. Moreover, MPC provides an optimal tradeoff between modification of load impedance, variation of dc-link voltage and battery current ripples. This is particularly important during transients or starting of system faults, since battery response is not very fast. Optimal tradeoff becomes even more significant when considering low-cost power buffer without battery. This paper analyzes system models for both voltage swell and voltage dip faults. Furthermore, a dual mode MPC algorithm is implemented in real time offering improved stability. A comprehensive set of experimental results is included to verify the efficacy of the proposed power buffer

    A loop cancellation based active damping solution for constant power instability in vehicular power systems

    In recent years, electric propulsion systems have increasingly been used in land, sea and air vehicles. The vehicular power systems are usually loaded with tightly regulated power electronic converters which tend to draw constant power. Since the constant power loads (CPLs) impose negative incremental resistance characteristics on the feeder system, they pose a potential threat to the stability of vehicular power systems. This effect becomes more significant in the presence of distribution lines between source and load in large vehicular power systems such as electric ships and more electric aircrafts. System transients such as sudden drop of converter side loads or increase of constant power requirement can cause complete system instability. Most of the existing research work focuses on the modeling and stabilization of DC vehicular power systems with CPLs. Only a few solutions are proposed to stabilize AC vehicular power systems with non-negligible distribution lines and CPLs. Therefore, this paper proposes a novel loop cancellation technique to eliminate constant power instability in AC vehicular power systems with a theoretically unbounded system stability region. Analysis is carried out on system stability with the proposed method and simulation results are presented to validate its effectiveness
