United We Serve: A Call To Universal Jewish Service
We have reached a turning point in American Jewish history. Now that large segments of our community are living successful, integrated lives, we have an opportunity to align ourselves behind service to enrich Jewish life and to effect prophetic change in the world. In Pirke Avot (Ethics of the Fathers), Rabbi Tarfon admonishes us, You are not obliged to finish the task, neither are you free to desist from it. The usual interpretation is that our task is bigger than any of us in terms of the quantity of work that must be done. Rabbi Tarfon\u27s dictum, however, also refers to the complexity of the task. We come to understand the critical interdependence of individuals, each bringing their own skills and varied perspectives to accomplish our people\u27s role in the covenant
Sparking a Renewed Jewish Commitment to Service
Where do Jews stand in relation to service and what might a Jewish commitment to service look like? By reflecting on historical Jewish understandings of service, we hope to gain perspective on the present and the need to rejoin our concepts of God, service, and worship. Such explorations can spark a radical transformation of our social and communal norms

Adding climate change to the mix: using climate futures in conservation planning for Oregon’s oak-dominated habitats - Eugene, Oregon April 26-27, 2011 - Workshop Summary
In 2009, the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife initiated a process to incorporate information about climate change and its effects on fish, wildlife, and habitats into the Oregon Conservation Strategy. The agency acknowledged that climate change is already affecting Oregon’s species and habitats and that future climate change represents one of the most serious long-term challenges to sustaining healthy populations of fish and wildlife.
This workshop brought together representatives of the research, land and resource management, and conservation communities to contribute to the update and implementation of the Oregon Conservation Strategy. Participants were asked to help ODFW identify climate change impacts and high-priority climate change adaptation strategies for Oregon’s oak-dominated habitats. The meeting was also intended to build and strengthen partnerships in the research and management communities

Infliximab Does Not Promote the Presence of Collagenolytic Bacteria in a Mouse Model of Colorectal Anastomosis
BACKGROUND: Previous work from our group has suggested a pivotal role for collagenolytic bacteria in the development of anastomotic complications. Tumor necrosis factor antagonists are a mainstay of treatment for patients with inflammatory bowel disease. The reported impact of these agents on key surgical outcomes such as anastomotic leak has been inconsistent. The objective of this study is to assess the impact of infliximab on the anastomotic microbiome in a mouse model of colon resection. DESIGN: BALB/c mice underwent colon resection with primary anastomosis. Mice were randomly assigned to receive either an intraperitoneal dose of saline (control) or 10 mg/kg of infliximab for 8 weeks prior to surgery. On postoperative day 7, the animals were sacrificed. Anastomotic tissues were analyzed by histology with TUNNEL staining as a marker of epithelial apoptosis. In order to assess compositional and functional changes of the local microbiome, anastomotic tissues were further analyzed by 16S rRNA V4 region sequencing and for the presence of collagenolytic strains that may impair anastomotic healing. The main outcome measures were microbiome community structure and the presence of collagenolytic bacteria. RESULTS: Infliximab-treated mice demonstrated an increase in epithelial apoptosis, consistent with the expected drug effect. Although infliximab modified the perianastomotic microbiome, no increase in the presence of collagenolytic bacteria was observed. CONCLUSIONS: Infliximab did not promote the emergence of collagenolytic bacteria or demonstrably impair anastomotic healing in a mouse model of colon resection and anastomosis

Testing a Mahalanobis Distance Model of Black Bear Habitat Use in the Ouachita Mountains of Oklahoma
Regional wildlife–habitat models are commonly developed but rarely tested with truly independent data. We tested a published habitat model for black bears (Ursus americanus) with new data collected in a different site in the same ecological region (i.e., Ouachita Mountains of Arkansas and Oklahoma, USA). We used a Mahalanobis distance model developed from relocations of black bears in Arkansas to produce a map layer of Mahalanobis distances on a study area in neighboring Oklahoma. We tested this modeled map layer with relocations of black bears on the Oklahoma area. The distributions of relocations of female black bears were consistent with model predictions. We conclude that this modeling approach can be used to predict regional suitability for a species of interest
Diagnostic accuracy of telestroke consultation: a Louisiana based tele-network experience
Background and purposeTelestroke has grown significantly since its implementation. Despite growing utilization, there is a paucity of data regarding the diagnostic accuracy of telestroke to distinguish between stroke and its mimics. We aimed to evaluate diagnostic accuracy of telestroke consultations and explore the characteristics of misdiagnosed patients with a focus on stroke mimics.MethodsWe conducted a retrospective study of all the consultations in our Ochsner Health’s TeleStroke program seen between April 2015 and April 2016. Consultations were classified into one of three diagnostic categories: stroke/transient ischemic attack, mimic, and uncertain. Initial telestroke diagnosis was compared with the final diagnosis post review of all emergency department and hospital data. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), positive likelihood ratio (LR+) and negative likelihood ratio (LR−) for diagnosis of stroke/TIA versus mimic were calculated. Area under receiver-operating characteristic curve (AUC) analysis to predict true stroke was performed. Bivariate analysis based on the diagnostic categories examined association with sex, age, NIHSS, stroke risk factors, tPA given, bleeding after tPA, symptom onset to last known normal, symptom onset to consult, timing in the day, and consult duration. Logistic regression was performed as indicated by bivariate analysis.ResultsEight hundred and seventy-four telestroke evaluations were included in our analysis. Accurate diagnosis through teleneurological consultation was seen in 85% of which 532 were strokes (true positives) and 170 were mimics (true negatives). Sensitivity, specificity, PPV, NPV were 97.8, 82.5, 93.7 and 93.4%, respectively. LR+ and LR− were 5.6 and 0.03. AUC (95% CI) was 0.9016 (0.8749–0.9283). Stroke mimics were more common with younger age and female gender and in those with less vascular risk factors. LR revealed OR (95% CI) of misdiagnosis for female gender of 1.9 (1.3–2.9). Lower age and lower NIHSS score were other predictors of misdiagnosis.ConclusionWe report high diagnostic accuracy of the Ochsner Telestroke Program in discriminating stroke/TIA and stroke mimics, with slight tendency towards over diagnosis of stroke.
