    South Dakota Agricultural Off-Farm Occupational Opportunities and Training Needs

    Agriculture, the largest occupational field in the United States, employs about 40% of the total civilian labor force. In South Dakota approximately 85% of the total income (nearing the $1 billion mark) is derived from agriculture. On the basis of our survey of 126 South Dakota firms we conclude that at least 2,485 new workers with competencies in agriculture will be needed in this state by 1972. The guidelines we suggest in this report for developing and implementing vocational and technical training programs for off-farm agricultural occupations in South Dakota are based on our findings of growth trends in present occupational areas, plus the new job areas that businesses and industries who responded to our survey predict will come into being. This sampling of South Dakota firms indicates that new workers with competencies in agriculture will be needed in the 1968 to 1972 period in at least 480 business firms throughout South Dakota. Jobs include replacements for present workers and for newly created positions wrought by growth and development in these firms. The difficulties already experienced in filling jobs requiring specially trained workers in off-farm agriculture points to the need for more training programs. Over half of the firms responding to this study desired some on-the-job training; 44.4% favored short courses provided by the industry; and 43.2% indicated a need for some form of in-service training. It is evident therefore, that opportunities for workers trained in agricultural competencies far exceed their supply. Furthermore this study substantiates the conclusion that as agricultural technology continues to flourish and as population continues to grow, new off-farm agricultural jobs will continue to grow. More than three-fourths of the firms studied indicated they would hire new or additional agricultural workers in the next five years. These findings are conservative, since they are concerned only with South Dakota\u27s present businesses, and do not reflect the numbers of workers needed in new and emerging agricultural businesses in the state

    Nonperturbative Determination of Heavy Meson Bound States

    In this paper we obtain a heavy meson bound state equation from the heavy quark equation of motion in heavy quark effective theory (HQET) and the heavy meson effective field theory we developed very recently. The bound state equation is a covariant extention of the light-front bound state equation for heavy mesons derived from light-front QCD and HQET. We determine the covariant heavy meson wave function variationally by minimizing the binding energy Λˉ\bar{\Lambda}. Subsequently the other basic HQET parameters λ1\lambda_1 and λ2\lambda_2, and the heavy quark masses mbm_b and mcm_c can also be consistently determined.Comment: 15 pages, 1 figur

    Study of Quark Propagator Solutions to the Dyson--Schwinger Equation in a Confining Model

    We solve the Dyson--Schwinger equation for the quark propagator in a model with singular infrared behavior for the gluon propagator. We require that the solutions, easily found in configuration space, be tempered distributions and thus have Fourier transforms. This severely limits the boundary conditions that the solutions may satisify. The sign of the dimensionful parameter that characterizes the model gluon propagator can be either positive or negative. If the sign is negative, we find a unique solution. It is singular at the origin in momentum space, falls off like 1/p21/p^2 as p2+/p^2\rightarrow +/-\infty, and it is truly nonperturbative in that it is singular in the limit that the gluon--quark interaction approaches zero. If the sign of the gluon propagator coefficient is positive, we find solutions that are, in a sense that we exhibit, unconstrained linear combinations of advanced and retarded propagators. These solutions are singular at the origin in momentum space, fall off like 1/p21/p^2 asympotically, exhibit ``resonant--like" behavior at the position of the bare mass of the quark when the mass is large compared to the dimensionful interaction parameter in the gluon propagator model, and smoothly approach a linear combination of free--quark, advanced and retarded two--point functions in the limit that the interaction approaches zero. In this sense, these solutions behave in an increasingly ``particle--like" manner as the quark becomes heavy. The Feynman propagator and the Wightman function are not tempered distributions and therefore are not acceptable solutions to the Schwinger--Dyson equation in our model.     The Infrared Behavior of Gluon and Ghost Propagators in Landau Gauge QCD

    A solvable systematic truncation scheme for the Dyson-Schwinger equations of Euclidean QCD in Landau gauge is presented. It implements the Slavnov-Taylor identities for the three-gluon and ghost-gluon vertices, whereas irreducible four-gluon couplings as well as the gluon-ghost and ghost-ghost scattering kernels are neglected. The infrared behavior of gluon and ghost propagators is obtained analytically: The gluon propagator vanishes for small spacelike momenta whereas the ghost propagator diverges stronger than a massless particle pole. The numerical solutions are compared with recent lattice data for these propagators.     The possible infrared behaviour of the gluon propagator is studied analytically, using the Schwinger-Dyson equations, in both the axial and the Landau gauge. The possibility of a gluon propagator less singular than 1/k21/k^{2} when k20k^{2} \rightarrow 0 is investigated and found to be inconsistent, despite claims to the contrary, whereas an infrared enhanced one is consistent.     Mechanism of Assembly of the Dimanganese-Tyrosyl Radical Cofactor of Class Ib Ribonucleotide Reductase: Enzymatic Generation of Superoxide Is Required for Tyrosine Oxidation via a Mn(III)Mn(IV) Intermediate

    Ribonucleotide reductases (RNRs) utilize radical chemistry to reduce nucleotides to deoxynucleotides in all organisms. In the class Ia and Ib RNRs, this reaction requires a stable tyrosyl radical (Y•) generated by oxidation of a reduced dinuclear metal cluster. The Fe[superscript III][subscript 2]-Y• cofactor in the NrdB subunit of the class Ia RNRs can be generated by self-assembly from Fe[superscript II][subscript 2]-NrdB, O[subscript 2], and a reducing equivalent. By contrast, the structurally homologous class Ib enzymes require a Mn[superscript III][subscript 2]-Y• cofactor in their NrdF subunit. Mn[superscript II][subscript 2]-NrdF does not react with O[subscript 2], but it binds the reduced form of a conserved flavodoxin-like protein, NrdI[subscript hq], which, in the presence of O[subscript 2], reacts to form the Mn[superscript III][subscript 2]-Y• cofactor. Here we investigate the mechanism of assembly of the Mn[superscript III][subscript 2]-Y• cofactor in Bacillus subtilis NrdF. Cluster assembly from Mn[superscript II][subscript 2]-NrdF, NrdI[subscript hq], and O[subscript 2] has been studied by stopped flow absorption and rapid freeze quench EPR spectroscopies. The results support a mechanism in which NrdI[subscript hq] reduces O[subscript 2] to O[subscript 2]•– (40–48 s[superscript –1], 0.6 mM O[subscript 2]), the O[subscript 2]•– channels to and reacts with Mn[superscript II][subscript 2]-NrdF to form a Mn[superscript III]Mn[superscript IV] intermediate (2.2 ± 0.4 s[superscript –1]), and the Mn[superscript III]Mn[superscript IV] species oxidizes tyrosine to Y• (0.08–0.15 s[superscript –1]). Controlled production of O[subscript 2]•– by NrdI[subscript hq] during class Ib RNR cofactor assembly both circumvents the unreactivity of the Mn[superscript II][subscript 2] cluster with O[subscript 2] and satisfies the requirement for an “extra” reducing equivalent in Y• generation.National Institutes of Health (U.S.) (Grant GM81393)United States.     Psychotropic drugs and the risk of fractures in old age: a prospective population-based study

    <p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>There is evidence that the use of any psychotropic and the concomitant use of two or more benzodiazepines are related to an increased risk of fractures in old age. However, also controversial results exist. The aim was to describe associations between the use of a psychotropic drug, or the concomitant use of two or more of these drugs and the risk of fractures in a population aged 65 years or over.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>This study was a part of a prospective longitudinal population-based study carried out in the municipality of Lieto, South-Western Finland. The objective was to describe gender-specific associations between the use of one psychotropic drug [benzodiazepine (BZD), antipsychotic (AP) or antidepressant (AD)] or the concomitant use of two or more psychotropic drugs and the risk of fractures in a population 65 years or over. Subjects were participants in the first wave of the Lieto study in 1990-1991, and they were followed up until the end of 1996. Information about fractures confirmed with radiology reports in 1,177 subjects (482 men and 695 women) during the follow-up was collected from medical records. Two follow-up periods (three and six years) were used, and previously found risk factors of fractures were adjusted as confounding factors separately for men and women. The Poisson regression model was used in the analyses.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The concomitant use of two or more BZDs and the concomitant use of two or more APs were related to an increased risk of fractures during both follow-up periods after adjusting for confounding factors in men. No similar associations were found in women.</p> <p>Conclusions</p> <p>The concomitant use of several BZDs and that of several APs are associated with an increase in the risk of fractures in older men. Our findings show only risk relations. We cannot draw the conclusion that these drug combinations are causes of fractures.</p

    Model gluon propagator and pion and rho-meson observables

    A one parameter, model confined-gluon propagator is employed in a phenomenological application of the Dyson-Schwinger and Bethe-Salpeter equations to the calculation of a range of π\pi- and ρ\rho-meson observables. Good agreement is obtained with the data. The calculated quark propagator does not have a singularity on the real-p2p^2 axis. A mass formula for the pion, involving only the vacuum, dressed quark propagator, is presented and shown to provide an accurate estimate of the mass obtained via a direct solution of the Bethe-Salpeter equation.Comment: 17 Pages, no figures, REVTE
