Electrodynamics at non-zero temperature, chemical potential, and Bose condensate

Electrodynamics of charged scalar bosons and spin 1/2 fermions is studied at non-zero temperature, chemical potentials, and possible Bose condensate of the charged scalars. Debye screening length, plasma frequency, and the photon dispersion relation are calculated. It is found that in presence of the condensate the time-time component of the photon polarization operator in the first order in electric charge squared acquires infrared singular parts proportional to inverse powers of the spatial photon momentum k.Comment: Two references and explanatory comments are added according to the referee's suggestions. The paper is accepted for publication in JCA

Examining the Relationship Between Subclinical Borderline Personality Disorder and Social Support Networks

The purpose of my study was to investigate the relationship between subclinical Borderline Personality Disorder and social support in situational measures such as social provisions, network size, and network satisfaction as well as dispositional measures such as support seeking and socially supportive behaviors. I hypothesized that BPD scores would be negatively correlated with all dispositional support measures. I also predicted that in situational support measures, BPD would have a negative correlation. I hypothesized when confronted with romantic stressors participants would receive more support when confounded with the workplace stressors. Participants (N= 178; 146 women 28 men, 3 nonbinary individuals, and 1 identified as other) attending Bucknell, a northeastern, rural, university completed the measures of all variables and subscales through an online self-report survey. Pearson\u27s correlations between dispositional support and BPD scores revealed that BPD scores had a significant negative correlation with Nurturance and a significant positive correlation with Reassurance of Worth and Guidance. Pearson\u27s correlations for BPD symptoms and social support for situational measures revealed that romantic stressors had a positive significant correlation to Nondirective Support. Between the workplace and romantic situation stressors, t-tests revealed that Nondirective Support was significantly higher in the romantic stressor than in the workplace while the workplace condition had significantly higher Reliable Alliance scores than romantic stressors. The results revealed that BPD symptoms had significant correlations to the type and amount of support provided situationally and dispositionally. Future research should focus on assessment measures with a multidimensional, spectrum approach, which would be useful for the subclinical population

Regulating Neuronal Growth with Structurally Defined Glycans

Chondroitin sulfate proteoglycans (CSPGs) and keratan sulfate proteoglycans (KSPGs) play an important role in neural development. Aggrecan, a CSPG, operates in the neural extracellular matrix where it negatively regulates neurite outgrowth to prevent aberrant process formation. Unfortunately, this aggrecan or CSPG-rich/KSPG-rich barrier can also prevent neuronal regeneration, which contributes to the inability to repair brain and spinal cord injuries. Removal of CSPGs and KSPGs has been shown to increase neurite outgrowth. We extend these findings by testing the ability of structurally-defined glycans to outcompete aggrecan and allow neurite outgrowth. Our overall goal is to determine if there is a particular glycan structure which can overcome inhibitory CSPGs and KSPGs without inhibiting neurite outgrowth themselves. We utilized primary cultures of rat neurons and applied polydisperse-related mixtures of CSPGs, KSPGs and newly-isolated, novel glycans in the absence and presence of aggrecan. Several of these glycans successfully removed the aggrecan-induced blockade while not inhibiting neurite outgrowth on their own. We are currently investigating the efficacy of these compounds in concentration-response curves and are testing additional glycans with different molecular weights and varying sulfation patterns to determine the structural requirements for the glycans as modulators of neurite outgrowth. By investigating the impacts of these glycans, we will increase the understanding of proteoglycan regulation of neural structure and function, and potentially identify compounds which could be used to treat spinal cord injuries

Fungal solid state fermentation on agro-industrial wastes for acid wastewater decolourization in a continuous flow packed-bed bioreactor

    Get PDF
This study was aimed at developing a process of solid state fermentation (SSF) with the fungi Pleurotus ostreatus and Trametes versicolor on apple processing residues for wastewater decolorization. Both fungi were able to colonize apple residues without any addition of nutrients, material support or water. P. ostreatus produced the highest levels of laccases (up to 9 U g-1 of dry matter) and xylanases (up to 80 U g-1 of dry matter). A repeated batch decolorization experiment was set up with apple residues colonized by P. ostreatus, achieving 50% decolorization and 100% detoxification after 24 h, and, adding fresh wastewater every 24 h, a constant decolorization of 50% was measured for at least 1 month. A continuous decolorization experiment was set up by a packed-bed reactor based on colonized apple residues achieving a performance of 100 mg dye L-1 day-1 at a retention time of 50

Targeted Presentation Skill Trainings to Nurture Construction Management Students at Florida International University

    Get PDF
In today’s fast-paced work environment, competent construction managers (CM) are vital for project success. However, to be competent, these professionals require the mastery of not only technical skills but also soft skills that enable them to achieve their full potential. Regardless, many CM prize technical abilities over the day-to-day writing, speaking, and overall soft skills, assuming these are not as important to the knowledge of complex concepts. Industry leaders confirm this, as evidence states graduate construction managers lack the basic communication skills to “hit the ground running”. That said, academic programs should seek to adapt and nurture these vital skill sets. For this reason, this research seeks to understand FIU-STEM students’ current communication skills and advance CM students’ presentation skills through three multi-context communication-trainings. These activities offered students opportunities to enhance their presentation performance, improve their confidence, and overcome common presentation issues, thus increasing their chances to thrive in their careers

Van Gogh’s Yellow Flowers: The Influence of Post-Impressionism on Mansfield and Woolf

In a letter to Dorothy Brett, Katherine Mansfield responds to Van Gogh’s painting of sunflowers explaining, “That picture seemed to reveal something that I hadn\u27t realised before I saw it. It lived with me afterwards. It still does... They taught me something about writing, which was queer—a kind of freedom—or rather, a shaking free” that she felt after experiencing his painting (O’Sullivan, The Collected Letters of Katherine Mansfield, 4: 333). The aesthetic emotion resided with her thereafter, as she claimed: “I can smell them as I write” (O’Sullivan, TCLKM, 2: 333). French paintings of the late nineteenth and early twentieth century by Van Gogh and Cezanne illuminated ordinary aspects of life. Roger Fry, a painter, critic, and a member of the Bloomsbury group established the Post-Impressionist movement and its aesthetic theory, which contributed to the transition of British culture. Katherine Mansfield and Virginia Woolf utilized the aesthetic emotion to deliver the individual’s experience to the public. I will analyze Virginia Woolf’s To the Lighthouse and “Kew Gardens,” and Katherine Mansfield’s “Bliss” and “Prelude,” to explore how the female authors incorporate Post-Impressionist elements such as fruit, flowers, and painting to produce the aesthetic emotion within their audiences

Differential neuropsychological profiles in Parkinsonian patients with or without vascular lesions.

    Get PDF
The purpose of this study is to compare the neuropsychological profile of patients affected by parkinsonism and vascular lesions to that in patients with PD alone (PD) and to evaluate whether the brain vascular lesion load is associated with neuropsychological variables. Thirty-six nondemented patients with parkinsonism were divided into 3 groups of 12 patients each, according to both clinical history and the presence of brain vascular lesions and/or dopaminergic denervation as revealed by magnetic resonance and dopamine transporter imaging, respectively. The first group had vascular lesions without dopaminergic denervation (VP group); the second group had vascular lesions and dopaminergic denervation (DD) (VP+DD group); and the third group consisted of patients with dopaminergic denervation (PD group) without vascular lesions. All patients underwent neurological and neuropsychological assessments. The groups differed in disease duration, age at onset, and cerebrovascular risk factors. The VP and VP+DD groups performed worse than the PD group on frontal/executive tasks. Regardless of the presence of dopaminergic denervation, cerebrovascular lesions in hemispheric white matter, basal ganglia, and cerebellum have an important effect in determining early onset and severity of cognitive impairment in patients with parkinsonism
