How to make a better magnet? Insertion of additional bridging ligands into a magnetic coordination polymer
A three-dimensional cyanide-bridged coordination polymer based on FeII (S = 2) and NbIV (S = 1/2) {[FeII(H2O)2]2[NbIV(CN)8]·4H2O}n (Fe2Nb) was modified at the self-assembly stage by inserting an additional formate HCOO− bridge into its cyanide framework. The resulting mixed-bridged {(NH4)[(H2O)FeII-(μ-HCOO)-FeII(H2O)][NbIV(CN)8]·3H2O}n (Fe2NbHCOO) exhibited additional FeII-HCOO-FeII structural motifs connecting each of the two FeII centers. The insertion of HCOO− was possible due to the substitution of some of the aqua ligands and crystallization water molecules in the parent framework by formate anions and ammonium cations. The formate molecular bridge not only shortened the distance between FeII ions in Fe2NbHCOO from 6.609 Å to 6.141 Å, but also created additional magnetic interaction pathways between the magnetic centers, resulting in an increase in the long range magnetic ordering temperature from 43 K for Fe2Nb to 58 K. The mixed-bridged Fe2NbHCOO also showed a much broader magnetic hysteresis loop of 0.102 T, compared to 0.013 T for Fe2Nb
Low-coordinate dinuclear dysprosium(III) single molecule magnets utilizing LiCl as bridging moieties and tris(amido)amine as blocking ligands
A low-coordinate dinuclear dysprosium complex {[Dy(N3N)(THF)][LiCl(THF)]}2 (Dy2) with a double bridging ‘LiCl’ moiety and tris(amido)amine (N3N)3− anions as a blocking ligand is synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. Thanks to the use of the chelating blocking ligand (N3N)3− equipped with large steric –SiMe3 groups, the coordination sphere of both DyIII ions is restricted to only six donor atoms. The three amido nitrogen atoms determine the orientation of the easy magnetization axes of both DyIII centers. Consequently, Dy2 shows slow magnetic relaxation typical for single molecule magnets (SMMs). However, the effective energy barrier for magnetization reversal determined from the AC magnetic susceptibility measurements is much lower than the separation between the ground and the first excited Kramers doublet based on the CASSCF ab initio calculations. In order to better understand the possible influence of the anticipated intramolecular magnetic interactions in this dinuclear molecule, its GdIII-analog {[Gd(N3N)(THF)][LiCl(THF)]}2 (Gd2) is also synthesized and studied magnetically. Detailed magnetic measurements reveal very weak antiferromagnetic interactions in Gd2. This in turn suggests similar antiferromagnetic interactions in Dy2, which might be responsible for its peculiar SMM behavior and the absence of the magnetic hysteresis loop
How to quench ferromagnetic ordering in a CN-bridged Ni(II)-Nb(IV) molecular magnet? : a combined high-pressure single-crystal X-ray diffraction and magnetic study
High-pressure (HP) structural and magnetic properties of a magnetic coordination polymer {[NiII(pyrazole)4]2[NbIV(CN)8]·4H2O}n (Ni2Nb) are presented, discussed and compared with its two previously reported analogs {[MnII(pyrazole)4]2[NbIV(CN)8]·4H2O}n (Mn2Nb) and {[FeII(pyrazole)4]2[NbIV(CN)8]·4H2O}n (Fe2Nb). Ni2Nb shows a significant decrease of the long-range ferromagnetic ordering under high pressure when compared to Mn2Nb, where the pressure enhances the Tc (magnetic ordering temperature), or to Fe2Nb exhibiting a pressure-induced spin crossover. The different HP magnetic responses of the three compounds were rationalized and correlated with the structural models as determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction
Adipokines in the pathogenesis of idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease
W ostatnich
latach liczne badania oceniały rolę cytokin prozapalnych i hormonów tkanki tłuszczowej nazywanych adipokinami w patogenezie nieswoistych
zapaleń jelit. Adipokiny wykazują zarówno pro-, jak i przeciw- zapalne działania i mogą uczestniczyć w regulacji odpowiedzi
immunologicznej.
depozyt tłuszczu zlokalizowany w krezce jelita i bezpośrednio je otaczający.
Celem prezentowanej pracy był przegląd aktualnej literatury dotyczącej roli adipokin w patogenezie nieswoistych zapaleń jelit, takich
jak choroba Crona i wrzodziejące zapalenie jelita grubego. (Endokrynol Pol 2013; 64 (3): 226–231)Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC) are the two common forms of idiopathic inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). The aetiology
and pathogenesis of IBD are not yet known. Genetic predisposition has been suggested as playing a role in the improper immune
response to commensal microbiota. The main link of IBD pathogenesis is an intestinal immune system disability after enteric infection,
resulting in an uncontrolled and chronic inflammatory state.
Recently, numerous studies have been focused on the role of proinflammatory cytokines as well as hormones of adipose tissue named
adipokines in the pathogenesis of IBD. Adipokines have pro- and anti-inflammatory properties and can modulate the immune response.
It has been shown that obesity is associated with systemic microinflammation. On the other hand, experimental studies have revealed
a link between levels of some adipokines and the severity of inflammation in IBD independent of body mass. The fat deposits called ‘wrapping’
or ‘creeping’ fat envelop the intestine, and adipokines produced by this tissue play an important role in the pathogenesis of IBD.
The aim of this manuscript was to review the current literature concerning the role of adipokines in the pathogenesis of IBD.

New adipokines - good or bad for pathogenesis of insulin resistance?
Tkankę tłuszczową można uznać za największy "gruczoł endokrynny"
w ludzkim organizmie. W ostatnich latach gwałtownie rośnie
liczba znanych adipokin (hormonów tkanki tłuszczowej).
W wielu badaniach, w tym też własnych, obserwowano związek
między zwiększonym wydzielaniem adipokin, takich jak: TNF-α,
IL-6, leptyna i rezystyna, oraz zmniejszonym wydzielaniem adiponektyny
i rozwojem insulinooporności. W ciągu ostatnich pięciu
latach opisano nowe adipokiny, takie jak: wisfatyna, waspina, omentyna
i białko wiążące retinol 4 (RBP-4, retinol binding protein 4).
W niniejszej pracy dokonano przeglądu aktualnego piśmiennictwa,
przybliżając czytelnikowi wiedzę dotyczącą roli nowo poznanych
adipokin w patogenezie insulinooporności.
Stężenie wisfatyny w surowicy jest zwiększone w otyłości,
a w badaniach doświadczalnych dowiedziono, że wykazuje ona
działanie insulinomimetyczne. W zespole metabolicznym obserwowano
obniżenie wskaźnika wisfatyna/insulina.
Waspina jest pochodzącą z tkanki tłuszczowej proteazą serynową,
której wydzielanie rośnie w otyłości. W badaniach doświadczalnych
po podaniu waspiny obserwowano poprawę tolerancji glukozy
i insulinowrażliwości.
rozwój insulinooporności w wątrobie i tkance mięśniowej.
Podsumowując, można stwierdzić, że rosnąca z każdym rokiem
liczba danych doświadczalnych odnośnie substancji wydzielanych
przez tkankę tłuszczową zaangażowanych w patogenezę insulinooporności
nie pozwoliła na wyjaśnienie wielu wątpliwości dotyczących
rozwoju tego często występującego zaburzenia u ludzi.Adipose tissue may be regarded as the biggest "endocrine gland" in the human body. Number of well-known adipokines (hormones of adipose tissue) have been increasing rapidly during the last years.
In many studies, included ours, increased secretion of adipokines
such as: TNF-α, IL-6, leptin and resistin and decreased secretion
of adiponectin in obesity have been linked with development of
insulin resistance. In the last five years new adipokines such as:
visfatin, vaspin, omentin and retinol binding protein-4 (RBP-4) have
been described.
This review summaries the current literature and presents the up
to date knowledge concerning the role of new adipokines in the
development of insulin resistance.
Serum concentration of visfatin increases in obesity and experimental
studies revealed its insulinmimetic action. In metabolic syndrome
decreased visfatin/insulin index was observed.
Vaspin is a serine protease secreted by adipose tissue in increased
amount in obesity. Experimental studies revealed that vaspin improves
glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity in mice.
Omentin is produced and secreted by stromal cells of adipose
tissue but not by adipocytes. Its secretion is decreased in obesity.
Omentin increases insulin-stimulated transmembrane transport of
glucose and fosforylation of Akt in adipocytes. It suggests that
omentin increases insulin sensitivity.
Retinol binding protein 4 (RBP-4) is a protein secreted by adipose
tissue in increased amount in obesity. Experimental studies
revealed that RBP-4 participated in the development of insulin resistance
in liver and muscular tissue.
In summary, regardless of increasing number of experimental data
concerning substances secreted by adipose tissue, involved in the
development of insulin resistance, there are still many uncertainness
of their role in the pathogenesis of this often disturbance in humans
Magnetization dynamics and coherent spin manipulation of a propeller Gd(III) complex with the smallest helicene ligand
A homoleptic gadolinium(III) complex with the smallest helicene-type ligand, 1,10-phenanthroline-N,N'-dioxide (phendo) [Gd(phendo)(4)](NO3)(3)center dot xMeOH (phendo = 1,10-phenanthroline-N,N'-dioxide, MeOH = methanol), shows slow relaxation of the magnetization characteristic for Single Ion Magnets (SIM), despite negligible magnetic anisotropy, confirmed by ab initio calculations. Solid state dilution magnetic and EPR studies reveal that the magnetization dynamics of the [Gd(phendo)(4)](3+) cation is controlled mainly by a Raman process. Pulsed EPR experiments demonstrate long phase memory times (up to 2.7 mu s at 5 K), enabling the detection of Rabi oscillations at 20 K, which confirms coherent control of its spin state.</p
The Underexplored Field of Lanthanide Complexes with Helicene Ligands: Towards Chiral Lanthanide Single Molecule Magnets
The effective combination of chirality and magnetism in a single crystalline material can lead to fascinating cross-effects, such as magneto-chiral dichroism. Among a large variety of chiral ligands utilized in the design and synthesis of chiral magnetic materials, helicenes seem to be the most appealing ones, due to the exceptionally high specific rotation values that reach thousands of deg·cm3·g−1·dm−1, which is two orders of magnitude higher than for compounds with chiral carbon atoms. Despite the sizeable family of transition metal complexes with helicene-type ligands, there are only a few examples of such complexes with lanthanide ions. In this mini-review, we describe the most recent developments in the field of lanthanide-based complexes with helicene-type ligands and summarize insights regarding the further exploration of this family of compounds towards multifunctional chiral lanthanide single molecule magnets (Ln-SMMs)
