Red mullet, Mullus barbatus Linnaeus, 1758, is an economically very important species in trawl fisheries in the Adriatic Sea. Material for analysis was collected from October 2002 until May 2004 with a bottom trawl net from commercial trawlers on the Montenegrin shelf Mortality of this species was analyzed for the first time in this area, separately for males and females and for both sexes together. Until now, only the spatial distribution and catch per unit of effort (CPUE) of Mullus barbatus have been studied in Montenegrin waters. Estimated total mortality rates were Z(males) = 0.653 and Z(females) = 0.712. The average mortality rate for both sexes was Z m+f = 0.749, while the natural mortality rate was Mm+f = 0.342. Values of Z in the Montenegrin shelf area are considerably lower than Z values for the Croatian and Italian parts of the Adriatic Sea, indicating that on the Montenegrin shelf fishing of this species is significantly less intensive than in other trawl-fishing areas of the Adriatic Sea

Trophy value and age of hunted roebucks from tourist hunting game in different types of hunting grounds were studied in this paper. Analysis included 159 trophies assessed according to CIC formula. Average trophy value determined for plain type of hunting ground was 90.80 points, whereas for hilly type of hunting area it was 84.39 points. Plain type of hunting ground characterized by older average age compared to the hilly type, but these differences are not statistically significant.U radu je izvršeno proučavanje trofejne vrednost i starost odstreljenih srndaća iz lovno-turističkog odstrela u različitim tipovima lovišta.

New spectral templates for rhodopsin and porphyropsin visual pigments

A four-parameter model of spectral sensitivity curves was developed. Empirical equations were designed for A(1)- and A(2)-based visual pigments with the main a-band maximum absorptions (lambda(max)) from 350 nm, near the ultraviolet, up to 635 nm in the far-red part of the spectrum. Subtraction of the alpha-band from the full absorbance spectrum left a "beta-band" described by a lambda(max)-dependent Gaussian equation. Compatibility of our templates with A(1)- and A(2)-based spectra was tested on the electroretinographic (ERG-derived) scotopic action spectra recorded in dogfish shark, eel, Prussian carp and perch. To more precisely estimate the accuracy of our model, we compared it with widely used templates for visual pigments. There was almost no difference between the tested models in fitting the above-mentioned spectral data. One of the advantages of our model is that in the fitting of spectral sensitivity data it uses non-transformed wavelengths and the shape of the curve remains the same for a broad range of lambda(max) values. Compared to multiparameter templates of other authors, our model was designed with fewer (four) parameters, which we believe can bring us closer to understanding the true nature of the absorption curve

Element concentrations in selected fish species from different trophic levels were analyzed. The following fish species were analyzed: common nase (Chondrostoma nasus), roach (Rutilus rutilus), freshwater bream (Abramis brama), barbel (Barbus barbus), Prussian carp (Carassius gibelio), chub (Squalius cephalus), European perch (Perca fluviatilis), wels catfish (Silurus glanis) and northern pike (Esox lucius). Fish were collected from the Meduvršje Reservoir (West Morava River Basin, western Serbia) during 2012, and samples of liver, muscle and gills were analyzed for As, B, Ba, Cd, Co, Cr, Cu, Fe, Hg, Li, Mn, Mo, Ni, Pb, Sr, and Zn using inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectrometry (ICP-OES). The liver and gills had the highest measured element concentrations, with Cu, Zn, Fe and Sr being the most prominent. The bioaccumulation of metals was species-specific, with the accumulation exhibiting the following trends: Prussian carp > northern pike > freshwater bream > European perch > chub > common nase > barbel > roach > wels catfish; Li > Pb > Z n > Cu > Fe > Ba > Mn > Sr > Cr > As > Mo > Ni > B, in all examined species; for Co, Cd and Hg, the bioaccumulation factor (BAF) was 0. Results of this study point to the tissue-specific differences in element concentrations, and to distinct differences between fish species regarding the accumulation patterns: common nase, with the highest accumulation observed in the liver, and Prussian carp, with the highest accumulation observed in the gills.Archives of Biological Sciences (2016), 68(4): 811-81

This paper presents the results of red deer settling in the large forest complexes in Serbia, south of the rivers Sava and Danube. Comparative analysis was carried out in 4 hunting-rearing centres - Lomnička Reka, Miloševa Voda, Kumovac and Valmište. It was found that the pre-project activities and phase planning of red deer settling are mainly performed pursuant to the IUCN guidelines for reintroduction. However, the preparation and settling of the initial stock have not been performed professionally. After settling in the hunting-rearing centres, red deer adapted to the new site, but its complete monitoring was performed only while the initial stock was in the initial ground. According to the criteria for the assessment of the reintroduction success, settlement of red deer in "Lomnička Reka", "Miloševa Voda" and "Valmište" so far can be assessed as successful. However, the most important goal of the settling, to form natural populations which enable a normal hunting management has not yet been achieved.U radu su prikazani rezultati naseljavanja jelenske divljači u velike šumske komplekse Srbije, južno od Save i Dunava.

Specimens of Pontic shad (Alosa pontica Eichwald, 1838) were collected during April and May of 2006 in the Danube River (rkm 863) just downstream of the Iron Gate (Djerdap) II dam. Twenty-eight scales and 30 vertebrae were prepared and given to five interpreters with fish aging experience of from 3 to 30 years and with shad aging experience of from 0 to 12 years. Interpreters with experience in shad age determination showed lower values for the index of average percent error (IAPE) and an index of coefficient of variation (ICV). In regard to within-interpreter reproducibility, no significant differences were found between scale and vertebrae as structure for age determination. The most experienced reader showed the lowest value for IAPE, while the least experienced reader showed the highest value for IAPE. The results of this work indicate that experience in age determination by particular structure had more impact on age determination precision than specificity of structure, scale or vertebra. More work is needed on adopting standard protocols that must include some sort of common interaction between responsible age readers
