Harnessing the benefits of sanctuary scholarship: opportunities for community enhancement, widening participation and internationalisation at home
The paper focuses on the importance of Internationalisation at Home, access and support mechanisms which are provided and co-created by students and university departments to encourage sanctuary scholarship. The paper gives particular attention to activities that encourage meaningful interaction with local communities and widen international participation of marginalised groups, such as students from the global south and asylum seeker communities. The paper presents two case studies. The first case study focuses on a student-led project developed by the students and staff of Canterbury Christ Church University. The second case study projects students’ voices from the global south and refugee communities at The University of Kent and University College London (UCL). The experiences of these students highlight the importance of welcoming and supporting students from marginalised backgrounds. They also demonstrate the need for both curriculum-based and co-curricular activity and student services which provided tailored support and encouragement
An Improved Interactive Streaming Algorithm for the Distinct Elements Problem
The exact computation of the number of distinct elements (frequency moment
) is a fundamental problem in the study of data streaming algorithms. We
denote the length of the stream by where each symbol is drawn from a
universe of size . While it is well known that the moments can
be approximated by efficient streaming algorithms, it is easy to see that exact
computation of requires space . In previous work, Cormode
et al. therefore considered a model where the data stream is also processed by
a powerful helper, who provides an interactive proof of the result. They gave
such protocols with a polylogarithmic number of rounds of communication between
helper and verifier for all functions in NC. This number of rounds
can quickly make such
protocols impractical.
Cormode et al. also gave a protocol with rounds for the exact
computation of where the space complexity is but the total communication . They managed to give round protocols with
complexity for many other interesting problems
including , Inner product, and Range-sum, but computing exactly with
polylogarithmic space and communication and rounds remained open.

for exact computation of using bits of space and the communication is . The update

Renormalization group approach to vibrational energy transfer in protein
Renormalization group method is applied to the study of vibrational energy
transfer in protein molecule. An effective Lagrangian and associated equations
of motion to describe the resonant energy transfer are analyzed in terms of the
first-order perturbative renormalization group theory that has been developed
as a unified tool for global asymptotic analysis. After the elimination of
singular terms associated with the Fermi resonance, amplitude equations to
describe the slow dynamics of vibrational energy transfer are derived, which
recover the result obtained by a technique developed in nonlinear optics [S.J.
Lade, Y.S. Kivshar, Phys. Lett. A 372 (2008) 1077].Comment: 11 page
Screening of anxiety and quality of life in people with epilepsy.
PURPOSE: Up to 60% of people with epilepsy (PwE) have psychiatric comorbidity including anxiety. Anxiety remains under recognized in PwE. This study investigates if screening tools validated for depression could be used to detect anxiety disorders in PWE. Additionally it analyses the effect of anxiety on QoL. METHOD: 261 participants with a confirmed diagnosis of epilepsy were included. Neurological Disorders Depression Inventory for Epilepsy (NDDI-E) and Emotional Thermometers (ET), both validated to screen for depression were used. Hospital Anxiety and Depression Scale-Anxiety (HADS-A) with a cut off for moderate and severe anxiety was used as the reference standard. QoL was measured with EQ5-D. Sensitivity, specificity, positive and negative predictive value and ROC analysis as well as multivariate regression analysis were performed. RESULTS: Patients with depression (n=46) were excluded as multivariate regression analysis showed that depression was the only significant determinant of having anxiety in the group. Against HADS-A, NDDI-E and ET-7 showed highest level of accuracy in recognizing anxiety with ET7 being the most effective tool. QoL was significantly reduced in PwE and anxiety. CONCLUSION: Our study showed that reliable screening for moderate to severe anxiety in PwE without co-morbid depression is feasible with screening tools for depression. The cut off values for anxiety are different from those for depression in ET7 but very similar in NDDI-E. ET7 can be applied to screen simultaneously for depression and "pure" anxiety. Anxiety reduces significantly QoL. We recommend screening as an initial first step to rule out patients who are unlikely to have anxiety
Deciphering M-T diagram of shape memory Heusler alloys: reentrance, plateau and beyond
We present our recent results on temperature behaviour of magnetization
observed in Ni_47Mn_39In_14 Heusler alloys. Three regions can be distinguished
in the M-T diagram: (I) low temperature martensitic phase (with the Curie
temperature T_CM = 140 K), (II) intermediate mixed phase (with the critical
temperature T_MS = 230 K) exhibiting a reentrant like behavior (between T_CM
and T_MS) and (III) high temperature austenitic phase (with the Curie
temperature T_CA = 320 K) exhibiting a rather wide plateau region (between T_MS
and T_CA). By arguing that powerful structural transformations, causing drastic
modifications of the domain structure in alloys, would also trigger strong
fluctuations of the order parameters throughout the entire M-T diagram, we were
able to successfully fit all the data by incorporating Gaussian fluctuations
(both above and below the above three critical temperatures) into the
Ginzburg-Landau scenario
Associations Between Neighborhood SES and Functional Brain Network Development
Higher socioeconomic status (SES) in childhood is associated with stronger cognitive abilities, higher academic achievement, and lower incidence of mental illness later in development. While prior work has mapped the associations between neighborhood SES and brain structure, little is known about the relationship between SES and intrinsic neural dynamics. Here, we capitalize upon a large cross-sectional community-based sample (Philadelphia Neurodevelopmental Cohort, ages 8–22 years, n = 1012) to examine associations between age, SES, and functional brain network topology. We characterize this topology using a local measure of network segregation known as the clustering coefficient and find that it accounts for a greater degree of SES-associated variance than mesoscale segregation captured by modularity. High-SES youth displayed stronger positive associations between age and clustering than low-SES youth, and this effect was most pronounced for regions in the limbic, somatomotor, and ventral attention systems. The moderating effect of SES on positive associations between age and clustering was strongest for connections of intermediate length and was consistent with a stronger negative relationship between age and local connectivity in these regions in low-SES youth. Our findings suggest that, in late childhood and adolescence, neighborhood SES is associated with variation in the development of functional network structure in the human brain
