This article aims to present the importance of vitamin D in pig nutrition, especially its relevance in bone growth and development, in the form of a literature review. As animal husbandry intensified, changes in the structure of the facilities were necessary to adapt to the system, so the environment that was once open, today has closed, with roof facilities, which has drastically reduced the animals contact with the sun. As a result, the animals were then supplemented with vitamin D in synthetic form to compensate for the lack of sunlight exposure. Therefore, this vitamin has become an essential element in confined animal feed.Este artículo tiene como objetivo presentar la importancia de la vitamina D en la nutrición porcina, especialmente su relevancia en el crecimiento y desarrollo óseo, en forma de una revisión de la literatura. A medida que se intensificó la cría de animales, los cambios en la estructura de las instalaciones fueron necesarios para adaptarse al sistema, por lo que el entorno que una vez estuvo abierto, hoy se ha cerrado, con instalaciones en el techo, lo que ha reducido drásticamente el contacto de los animales con el sol. Como resultado, los animales fueron suplementados con vitamina D en forma sintética para compensar la falta de exposición a la luz solar. Em consequência disso, os animais passaram a ser suplementados com a vitamina D na forma sintética para compensar a falta dos raios solares. Use of homeopathic products in pigs feed improves the percentage, quality and marbling of meat

Abstract Studies and innovations on alternative feed additives, especially on homeopathic remedies have been highlighted in order to replace or reduce the use of antibiotics in pig production. This paper aimed to assess the addition of homeopathic products in pig diet and their effects on the growth performance, serum metabolites, nutrient and energy digestibility, carcass traits and meat quality. A total of 60 immunocastrated male pigs, weighing on average 30.91 ± 0.95 kg, were distributed in two treatments, 10 replicates and three animals/experimental unit. There was no effect (P≥0.05) of treatment on the growth performance and serum metabolites. The percentage of acid-insoluble ash recovered in the diet was greater (P≤0.01) in diets containing homeopathic products. The apparent digestible energy of diets containing homeopathic products was reduced (P≤0.01) in the growing phase and reduced (P≤0.01) the apparent digestibility coefficients of dry matter, crude protein, soluble neutral and acid detergent fibers, and gross energy in the growing and finishing phases. Pig that received diets with homeopathic products had higher (P≤0.05) amount of meat, percentage of meat and marbling. Estudo bioclimático das regiões litorânea, agreste e semiárida do estado de Sergipe para a avicultura de corte e postura

Objetivou-se com o presente trabalho realizar o estudo bioclimático do estado de Sergipe para a avicultura, como forma de definir os limites de aceitabilidade da espécie às condições ambientais prevalecentes nas regiões litorânea, agreste e semiárida do estado. Para isso, foi realizado o levantamento histórico dos valores médios mensais de temperatura e umidade relativa do ar e o cálculo mensal do índice de temperatura e umidade (ITU) das três regiões do estado de Sergipe. Verificou-se que, apesar de suas particularidades climáticas, as regiões litorânea, agreste e semiárida do estado de Sergipe apresentam as melhores condições de conforto térmico para a avicultura de corte e postura apenas durante os meses de junho a setembro; no período seco, nenhuma das regiões apresenta condições de conforto térmico para a atividade avícola; no período chuvoso, apenas a região agreste apresenta condições de conforto para a avicultura de corte; para a avicultura de postura, apenas a região litorânea não apresenta condições de conforto térmico

GENETIC PARAMETERS FOR GROWTH TRAITS OF SANTA INES SHEEP USING GIBBS SAMPLING

This study sought to estimate (co)variance and genetic parameters for birth weight (BWT) and weaning weight (WWT) in Santa Ines sheep. A total of 2,111 records were obtained from EMBRAPA/CPATC experimental herds, dating from the years 1998 to 2008. (Co)variance parameters were obtained through a two - trait analysis with the Gibbs sampling algorithm using the MTGSAM program. The mixed model included the environmental effects of sex, contemporary group and type of birth, in addition to residual, direct and maternal additive effects. Mean estimates of direct heritability for BWT and WWT were 0.25 and 0.09, respectively. Mean estimates of maternal heritability were 0.34 for BWT and 0.24 for WWT. The genetic correlation be- tween BWT and WWT was 0.14. The results suggest that breeding Santa Ines sheep for meat production must take into consideration direct and maternal additive genetic effects
