A formally verified compiler back-end
This article describes the development and formal verification (proof of
semantic preservation) of a compiler back-end from Cminor (a simple imperative
intermediate language) to PowerPC assembly code, using the Coq proof assistant
both for programming the compiler and for proving its correctness. Such a
verified compiler is useful in the context of formal methods applied to the
certification of critical software: the verification of the compiler guarantees
that the safety properties proved on the source code hold for the executable
compiled code as well
Simultaneous determination of wave speed and arrival time of reflected waves using the pressure-velocity loop
This is the post print version of the article. The official published version can be found at the link below. In a previous paper we demonstrated that the linear portion of the pressure–velocity loop (PU-loop) corresponding to early systole could be used to calculate the local wave speed. In this paper we extend this work to show that determination of the time at which the PU-loop first deviates from linearity provides a convenient way to determine the arrival time of reflected waves (Tr). We also present a new technique using the PU-loop that allows for the determination of wave speed and Tr simultaneously. We measured pressure and flow in elastic tubes of different diameters, where a strong reflection site existed at known distances away form the measurement site. We also measured pressure and flow in the ascending aorta of 11 anaesthetised dogs where a strong reflection site was produced through total arterial occlusion at four different sites. Wave speed was determined from the initial slope of the PU-loop and Tr was determined using a new algorithm that detects the sampling point at which the initial linear part of the PU-loop deviates from linearity. The results of the new technique for detecting Tr were comparable to those determined using the foot-to-foot and wave intensity analysis methods. In elastic tubes Tr detected using the new algorithm was almost identical to that detected using wave intensity analysis and foot-to-foot methods with a maximum difference of 2%. Tr detected using the PU-loop in vivo highly correlated with that detected using wave intensity analysis (r 2 = 0.83, P < 0.001). We conclude that the new technique described in this paper offers a convenient and objective method for detecting Tr, and allows for the dynamic determination of wave speed and Tr, simultaneously

Non-Parametric Approximations for Anisotropy Estimation in Two-dimensional Differentiable Gaussian Random Fields
Spatially referenced data often have autocovariance functions with elliptical
isolevel contours, a property known as geometric anisotropy. The anisotropy
parameters include the tilt of the ellipse (orientation angle) with respect to
a reference axis and the aspect ratio of the principal correlation lengths.
Since these parameters are unknown a priori, sample estimates are needed to
define suitable spatial models for the interpolation of incomplete data. The
distribution of the anisotropy statistics is determined by a non-Gaussian
sampling joint probability density. By means of analytical calculations, we
derive an explicit expression for the joint probability density function of the
anisotropy statistics for Gaussian, stationary and differentiable random
fields. Based on this expression, we obtain an approximate joint density which
we use to formulate a statistical test for isotropy. The approximate joint
density is independent of the autocovariance function and provides conservative
probability and confidence regions for the anisotropy parameters. We validate
the theoretical analysis by means of simulations using synthetic data, and we
illustrate the detection of anisotropy changes with a case study involving
background radiation exposure data. The approximate joint density provides (i)
a stand-alone approximate estimate of the anisotropy statistics distribution
(ii) informed initial values for maximum likelihood estimation, and (iii) a
useful prior for Bayesian anisotropy inference.Comment: 39 pages; 8 figure
Silencing of the Rotavirus NSP4 Protein Decreases the Incidence of Biliary Atresia in Murine Model
Biliary atresia is a common disease in neonates which causes obstructive jaundice and progressive hepatic fibrosis. Our previous studies indicate that rotavirus infection is an initiator in the pathogenesis of experimental biliary atresia (BA) through the induction of increased nuclear factor-kappaB and abnormal activation of the osteopontin inflammation pathway. In the setting of rotavirus infection, rotavirus nonstructural protein 4 (NSP4) serves as an important immunogen, viral protein 7 (VP7) is necessary in rotavirus maturity and viral protein 4 (VP4) is a virulence determiner. The purpose of the current study is to clarify the roles of NSP4, VP7 and VP4 in the pathogenesis of experimental BA. Primary cultured extrahepatic biliary epithelia were infected with Rotavirus (mmu18006). Small interfering RNA targeting NSP4, VP7 or VP4 was transfected before rotavirus infection both in vitro and in vivo. We analyzed the incidence of BA, morphological change, morphogenesis of viral particles and viral mRNA and protein expression. The in vitro experiments showed NSP4 silencing decreased the levels of VP7 and VP4, reduced viral particles and decreased cytopathic effect. NSP4-positive cells had strongly positive expression of integrin subunit α2. Silencing of VP7 or VP4 partially decreased epithelial injury. Animal experiments indicated after NSP4 silencing, mouse pups had lower incidence of BA than after VP7 or VP4 silencing. However, 33.3% of VP4-silenced pups (N = 6) suffered BA and 50% of pups (N = 6) suffered biliary injury after VP7 silencing. Hepatic injury was decreased after NSP4 or VP4 silencing. Neither VP4 nor VP7 were detected in the biliary ducts after NSP4. All together, NSP4 silencing down-regulates VP7 and VP4, resulting in decreased incidence of BA
The gravitino coupling to broken gauge theories applied to the MSSM
We consider gravitino couplings in theories with broken gauge symmetries. In
particular, we compute the single gravitino production cross section in W+ W-
fusion processes. Despite recent claims to the contrary, we show that this
process is always subdominant to gluon fusion processes in the high energy
limit. The full calculation is performed numerically; however, we give analytic
expressions for the cross section in the supersymmetric and electroweak limits.
We also confirm these results with the use of the effective theory of goldstino
interactions.Comment: 26 pages, 4 figure
SiC Nanowires Synthesized by Rapidly Heating a Mixture of SiO and Arc-Discharge Plasma Pretreated Carbon Black
SiC nanowires have been synthesized at 1,600 °C by using a simple and low-cost method in a high-frequency induction furnace. The commercial SiO powder and the arc-discharge plasma pretreated carbon black were mixed and used as the source materials. The heating-up and reaction time is less than half an hour. It was found that most of the nanowires have core-shell SiC/SiO2nanostructures. The nucleation, precipitation, and growth processes were discussed in terms of the oxide-assisted cluster-solid mechanism
Large-scale Synthesis of β-SiC Nanochains and Their Raman/Photoluminescence Properties
Although the SiC/SiO2 nanochain heterojunction has been synthesized, the chained homogeneous nanostructure of SiC has not been reported before. Herein, the novel β-SiC nanochains are synthesized assisted by the AAO template. The characterized results demonstrate that the nanostructures are constructed by spheres of 25–30 nm and conjoint wires of 15–20 nm in diameters. Raman and photoluminescence measurements are used to explore the unique optical properties. A speed-alternating vapor–solid (SA-VS) growth mechanism is proposed to interpret the formation of this typical nanochains. The achieved nanochains enrich the species of one-dimensional (1D) nanostructures and may hold great potential applications in nanotechnology
A hybrid discrete bubble-lattice Boltzmann–discrete element model for gas-charged sediments
This paper presents a hybrid discrete bubble-lattice Boltzmann–discrete element modelling framework for simulating gas-charged sediments, especially in the seabed. A discrete bubble model proposed in chemical engineering is adapted in the coupled discrete element/lattice Boltzmann method to model the migration of gas bubbles in saturated sediments involving interactions between gas bubbles and fluid/solid phases. Surface tension is introduced into the discrete bubble model in this work, so that it can handle the complex gas–fluid–solid interface. The lattice Boltzmann and discrete element methods are, respectively, employed to simulate fluid flows and mechanical behaviours of sediments. A velocity interpolation-based immerse boundary method is utilised to resolve the coupling between the fluid flow and the solid/gas phase. The proposed technique is preliminarily validated using simulations of bubble migration in fluids, which is followed by high-resolution investigations of the transport of a gas bubble in seabed sediments. It is demonstrated that this hybrid method can reproduce, to a certain degree, the characters of bubbles moving in seabed sediment tests
Quantum Correlations in NMR systems
In conventional NMR experiments, the Zeeman energy gaps of the nuclear spin
ensembles are much lower than their thermal energies, and accordingly exhibit
tiny polarizations. Generally such low-purity quantum states are devoid of
quantum entanglement. However, there exist certain nonclassical correlations
which can be observed even in such systems. In this chapter, we discuss three
such quantum correlations, namely, quantum contextuality, Leggett-Garg temporal
correlations, and quantum discord. In each case, we provide a brief theoretical
background and then describe some results from NMR experiments.Comment: 21 pages, 7 figure
