    Harmonic states for the free particle

    Different families of states, which are solutions of the time-dependent free Schr\"odinger equation, are imported from the harmonic oscillator using the Quantum Arnold Transformation introduced in a previous paper. Among them, infinite series of states are given that are normalizable, expand the whole space of solutions, are spatially multi-localized and are eigenstates of a suitably defined number operator. Associated with these states new sets of coherent and squeezed states for the free particle are defined representing traveling, squeezed, multi-localized wave packets. These states are also constructed in higher dimensions, leading to the quantum mechanical version of the Hermite-Gauss and Laguerre-Gauss states of paraxial wave optics.     Gamma rays from microquasars Cygnus X-1 and Cygnus X-3

    Gamma-ray observations of microquasars at high and very-high energies can provide valuable information of the acceleration processes inside the jets, the jet-environment interaction and the disk-jet coupling. Two high-mass microquasars have been deeply studied to shed light on these aspects: Cygnus X-1 and Cygnus X-3. Both systems display the canonical hard and soft X-ray spectral states of black hole transients, where the radiation is dominated by non-thermal emission from the corona and jets and by thermal emission from the disk, respectively. Here, we report on the detection of Cygnus X-1 above 60 MeV using 7.5 yr of Pass8 Fermi-LAT data, correlated with the hard X-ray state. A hint of orbital flux modulation was also found, as the source is only detected in phases around the compact object superior conjunction. We conclude that the high-energy gamma-ray emission from Cygnus X-1 is most likely associated with jets and its detection allow us to constrain the production site. Moreover, we include in the discussion the final results of a MAGIC long-term campaign on Cygnus X-1 that reaches almost 100 hr of observations at different X-ray states. On the other hand, during summer 2016, Cygnus X-3 underwent a flaring activity period in radio and high-energy gamma rays, similar to the one that led to its detection in the high-energy regime in 2009. MAGIC performed comprehensive follow-up observations for a total of about 70 hr.     Canonically conjugate pairs and phase operators

    For quantum mechanics on a lattice the position (``particle number'') operator and the quasi-momentum (``phase'') operator obey canonical commutation relations (CCR) only on a dense set of the Hilbert space. We compare exact numerical results for a particle in simple potentials on the lattice with the expectations, when the CCR are assumed to be strictly obeyed. Only for sufficiently smooth eigenfunctions this leads to reasonable results.     Fusion of radioactive 132^{132}Sn with 64^{64}Ni

    Evaporation residue and fission cross sections of radioactive 132^{132}Sn on 64^{64}Ni were measured near the Coulomb barrier. A large sub-barrier fusion enhancement was observed. Coupled-channel calculations including inelastic excitation of the projectile and target, and neutron transfer are in good agreement with the measured fusion excitation function. When the change in nuclear size and shift in barrier height are accounted for, there is no extra fusion enhancement in 132^{132}Sn+64^{64}Ni with respect to stable Sn+64^{64}Ni. A systematic comparison of evaporation residue cross sections for the fusion of even 112124^{112-124}Sn and 132^{132}Sn with 64^{64}Ni is presented.Comment: 9 pages, 11 figure

    Pathways to economic well-being among teenage mothers in Great Britain

    The present study examines pathways to independence from social welfare among 738 teenage mothers, participants of the 1970 British Cohort Study, who were followed up at age 30 years. Using a longitudinal design, a pathway model is tested, examining linkages between family social background, cognitive ability, school motivation, and individual investments in education, as well as work- and family-related roles. The most important factors associated with financial independence by age 30 are continued attachment to the labor market as well as a stable relationship with a partner (not necessarily the father of the child). Pathways to financial independence, in turn, are predicted through own cognitive resources, school motivation, and family cohesion.     Renormalization approach to constituent quark models of Quarkonium

    Constituent quark models, while successful, require a great deal of fine tuning of the short distance interactions by introducing phenomenological gluonic form factors which are ultimately designed to accurately reproduce the spectrum. We apply and develop renormalization ideas to reduce the short distance sensitivity and show that, as naively expected, but not explicitly implemented in the models, the physics of binding is entirely linked to the string tension whereas leptonic decays depend more on the gluon exchange potential. We also show how the spectrum of S- and D- 11^{--} states is successfully intertwined through the singular tensor interaction.Comment: 20 pages, 11 figure
