    A review of the literature on conservative and restorative treatment of children with vertebral compression fractures of thoracic and lumbar spine is presented. Conventional treatment techniques with prolonged bed rest and application of braces onlyduring the recovery period are described. In addition, the issues of early application of functional braces as the main treatment modality for patients with compression fractures are considered. This work demonstrated that an issue of conservative treatment of compression spine fractures using orthotics as the main treatment requiresfurther study.Представлен обзор литературы по проблеме консервативного и восстановительного лечения детей с компрессионными переломами тел позвонков грудной и поясничной локализации. Описаны классические методы лечения с длительным пребыванием пациента на постельном режиме, с использованием ортезов только в восстановительном периоде. Кроме того, рассмотрены вопросы раннего назначения функциональных ортезов в качестве основного лечебного пособия пациентам с компрессионными переломами. Данная работа показала, что проблема консервативного лечения компрессионных переломов позвоночника с применением средств ортезирования в качестве лечебного пособия требует дальнейшего изучения

    Long- and short-term earthquake prediction in Kamchatka

    This paper presents the results of long- and short-term earthquake prediction obtained during 1971–1974. They can be summarized as follows: The map of long-term prediction for the Kurile—Kamchatka zone compiled in 1965 and supplemented in 1972 by S.A. Fedotov is in good agreement (in four of four possible cases) with recorded seismicity. The results obtained allow us to suppose that the areas for which the log (Ep/Es) of small earthquakes is low may be the areas of future large earthquakes. Prediction of active periods for the Kamchatka earthquakes with M > 7 has been made on the basis of studying the correlation of seismicity with the lunar tide with a 18.6-year period. A possibility has been found for using the phenomenon of “induced foreshocks” for earthquake prediction, i.e., when a large remote earthquake induces small preceding events in the zone of preparation of a large earthquake. The following three methods were used for operative short-term prediction of the time and place of future earthquakes with M > 5.5. 1.(1) Use of specific electrotelluric field anomalies, from 5 to 20 days in duration, which are recorded by a specially designed network of stations. 2.(2) Method of Vp/Vs anomalies. The anomalously high and low Vp/Vs values for a seismic station point to the possibility of large earthquakes near the latter. 3.(3) The earthquake statistics method described by Fedotov et al. in 1972. Short-term seismic prediction is being made twice a week in two versions: Forecast I (for the whole of Kamchatka) and Forecast II (for each of six overlapping segments of the Kamchatka seismic zone). This paper discusses the results of successful testing of short-term earthquake prediction during two years. During the “alarm” periods the probability of large earthquakes is double the average.     Measurement of \Gamma_{ee}(J/\psi)*Br(J/\psi->e^+e^-) and \Gamma_{ee}(J/\psi)*Br(J/\psi->\mu^+\mu^-)

    The products of the electron width of the J/\psi meson and the branching fraction of its decays to the lepton pairs were measured using data from the KEDR experiment at the VEPP-4M electron-positron collider. The results are \Gamma_{ee}(J/\psi)*Br(J/\psi->e^+e^-)=(0.3323\pm0.0064\pm0.0048) keV, \Gamma_{ee}(J/\psi)*Br(J/\psi->\mu^+\mu^-)=(0.3318\pm0.0052\pm0.0063) keV. Their combinations \Gamma_{ee}\times(\Gamma_{ee}+\Gamma_{\mu\mu})/\Gamma=(0.6641\pm0.0082\pm0.0100) keV, \Gamma_{ee}/\Gamma_{\mu\mu}=1.002\pm0.021\pm0.013 can be used to improve theaccuracy of the leptonic and full widths and test leptonic universality. Assuming e\mu universality and using the world average value of the lepton branching fraction, we also determine the leptonic \Gamma_{ll}=5.59\pm0.12 keV and total \Gamma=94.1\pm2.7 keV widths of the J/\psi meson.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figure

    Search for narrow resonances in e+ e- annihilation between 1.85 and 3.1 GeV with the KEDR Detector

    We report results of a search for narrow resonances in e+ e- annihilation at center-of-mass energies between 1.85 and 3.1 GeV performed with the KEDR detector at the VEPP-4M e+ e- collider. The upper limit on the leptonic width of a narrow resonance Gamma(R -> ee) Br(R -> hadr) < 120 eV has been obtained (at 90 % C.L.)

    Measurement of main parameters of the \psi(2S) resonance

    A high-precision determination of the main parameters of the \psi(2S) resonance has been performed with the KEDR detector at the VEPP-4M e^{+}e^{-} collider in three scans of the \psi(2S) -- \psi(3770) energy range. Fitting the energy dependence of the multihadron cross section in the vicinity of the \psi(2S) we obtained the mass value M = 3686.114 +- 0.007 +- 0.011 ^{+0.002}_{-0.012} MeV and the product of the electron partial width by the branching fraction into hadrons \Gamma_{ee}*B_{h} = 2.233 +- 0.015 +- 0.037 +- 0.020 keV. The third error quoted is an estimate of the model dependence of the result due to assumptions on the interference effects in the cross section of the single-photon e^{+}e^{-} annihilation to hadrons explicitly considered in this work. Implicitly, the same assumptions were employed to obtain the charmonium leptonic width and the absolute branching fractions in many experiments. Using the result presented and the world average values of the electron and hadron branching fractions, one obtains the electron partial width and the total width of the \psi(2S): \Gamma_{ee} =2.282 +- 0.015 +- 0.038 +- 0.021 keV, \Gamma = 296 +- 2 +- 8 +- 3 keV. These results are consistent with and more than two times more precise than any of the previous experiments

    The authors presented an example of a complex treatment of pediatric patient with multiple fractures of the vertebrae in the thoracic spine. The child was operated on the burst fracture of a Th5 vertebra. Due to the presence of vertebral compression fractures Th8 a course of conservative treatment by the orthosis in hyperextension brace. Follow-up was 15 months.Представлен клинический пример комплексного лечения пациента детского возраста с множественными переломами позвонков в грудном отделе позвоночника. Ребенок оперирован по поводу взрывного перелома Th5 позвонка. В связи с наличием компрессионного перелома позвонка Th8 проведен курс консервативного лечения с ортезированием в гиперэкстензионном корсете. Срок наблюдения составил 15 месяцев

    Integrative transcription start site analysis and physiological phenotyping reveal torpor-specific expression program in mouse skeletal muscle

    Mice enter an active hypometabolic state, called daily torpor when they experience a lowered caloric intake under cold ambient temperature. During torpor, the oxygen consumption rate in some animals drops to less than 30% of the normal rate without harming the body. This safe but severe reduction in metabolism is attractive for various clinical applications; however, the mechanism and molecules involved are unclear. Therefore, here we systematically analyzed the gene expression landscape on the level of the RNA transcription start sites in mouse skeletal muscles under various metabolic states to identify torpor-specific transcribed regulatory patterns. We analyzed the soleus muscles from 38 mice in torpid and non-torpid conditions and identified 287 torpor-specific promoters out of 12,862 detected promoters. Furthermore, we found that the transcription factor ATF3 is highly expressed during torpor deprivation and its binding motif is enriched in torpor-specific promoters. Atf3 was also highly expressed in the heart and brown adipose tissue during torpor and systemically knocking out Atf3 affected the torpor phenotype. Our results demonstrate that mouse torpor combined with powerful genetic tools is useful for studying active hypometabolism
