Time-delayed Spatial Patterns in a Two-dimensional Array of Coupled Oscillators

We investigated the effect of time delays on phase configurations in a set of two-dimensional coupled phase oscillators. Each oscillator is allowed to interact with its neighbors located within a finite radius, which serves as a control parameter in this study. It is found that distance-dependent time-delays induce various patterns including traveling rolls, square-like and rhombus-like patterns, spirals, and targets. We analyzed the stability boundaries of the emerging patterns and briefly pointed out the possible empirical implications of such time-delayed patterns.Comment: 5 Figure

Absorption cross section and Hawking radiation in two-dimensional AdS black hole

We calculate the absorption coefficient of scalar field on the background of the two-dimensional AdS black hole, which is of relevance to Hawking radiation. For the massless scalar field, we find that there does not exist any massless radiation.Comment: 6 pages, revtex, no figure

Hawking Radiation and Energy Conservation in an Evaporating Black Hole

We define the Bondi energy for two-dimensional dilatonic gravity theories by generalizing the known expression of the ADM energy. We show that our definition of the Bondi energy is exactly the ADM energy minus the radiation energy at null infinity. An explicit calculation is done for the evaporating black hole in the RST model with the Strominger's ghost decoupling term. It is shown that the infalling matter energy is completely recovered through the Hawking radiation and the thunderpop.Comment: 17 pages, LaTex, 3 figures available on request

Gauge symmetry enhancement in Hamiltonian formalism

We study the Hamiltonian structure of the gauge symmetry enhancement in the enlarged CP(N) model coupled with U(2) Chern-Simons term, which contains a free parameter governing explicit symmetry breaking and symmetry enhancement. After giving a general discussion of the geometry of constrained phase space suitable for the symmetry enhancement, we explicitly perform the Dirac analysis of our model and compute the Dirac brackets for the symmetry enhanced and broken cases. We also discuss some related issues.Comment: 8 pages, typos correcte

Radiative Neutron-Proton Capture in Effective Chiral Lagrangians

We calculate the cross-section for the thermal n+p→d+γn+p\rightarrow d+\gamma process in chiral perturbation theory to next-to-next-to-leading order using heavy-fermion formalism. The exchange current correction is found to be (4.5±0.3) %(4.5\pm 0.3)~\% in amplitude and the chiral perturbation at one-loop order gives the cross section \sigma_{th}^{np}=(334\pm 2)\ {\mbox mb} which is in agreement with the experimental value (334.2\pm 0.5)\ {\mbox mb}. Together with the axial charge transitions, this provides a strong support for the power of chiral Lagrangians for nuclear physics.Comment: 9 pages, revtex, uses epsfig.sty, 2 uuencoded figure

Higher dimensional flat embeddings of black strings in (2+1) dimensions

We obtain (3+1) and (3+2) dimensional global flat embeddings of (2+1) uncharged and charged black strings, respectively. In particular, the charged black string, which is the dual solution of the Banados-Teitelboim-Zanelli black holes, is shown to be embedded in the same global embedding Minkowski space structure as that of the (2+1) charged de Sitter black hole solution.Comment: 11 pages, REVTEX, no figur

    Exact soluble two-dimensional charged wormhole

We present an exactly soluble charged wormhole model in two dimensions by adding infalling chiral fermions on the static wormhole. The infalling energy due to the infalling charged matter requires the classical back reaction of the geometry, which is solved by taking into account of the nontrivial nonchiral exotic energy. Finally, we obtain the exact expression for the size of the throat depending on the total amount of the infalling net energy and discuss the interesting transition from the AdS spacetime to the wormhole geometry.Comment: 8 pages, no figure

Universal Dynamics of Phase-Field Models for Dendritic Growth

We compare time-dependent solutions of different phase-field models for dendritic solidification in two dimensions, including a thermodynamically consistent model and several ad hoc models. The results are identical when the phase-field equations are operating in their appropriate sharp interface limit. The long time steady state results are all in agreement with solvability theory. No computational advantage accrues from using a thermodynamically consistent phase-field model.Comment: 4 pages, 3 postscript figures, in latex, (revtex

Near-Infrared Coronagraphic Observations of the T Tauri Binary System UY Aur

    Get PDF
We present a near-infrared image of UY Aur, a 0.9" separated binary system, using the Coronagraphic Imager with Adaptive Optics on the Subaru Telescope. Thanks to adaptive optics, the spatial resolution of our image was ~0.1" in the full width at half maximum of the point spread function, the highest achieved. By comparison with previous measurements, we estimated that the orbital period is ~1640 yrs and the total mass of the binary is ~1.73 solar mass. The observed H-band magnitude of the secondary varies by as much as 1.3 mag within a decade, while that of the primary is rather stable. This inconstancy may arise from photospheric variability caused by an uneven accretion rate or from the rotation of the secondary. We detected a half-ring shaped circumbinary disk around the binary with a bright southwest part but a barely detectable northeast portion. The brightness ratio is ~57. Its inner radius and inclination are about 520 AU and 42, respectively. The disk is not uniform but has remarkable features, including a clumpy structure along the disk, circumstellar material inside the inner cavity, and an extended armlike structure. The circumstellar material inside the cavity probably corresponds to a clump or material accreting from the disk onto the binary. The armlike structure is a part of the disk, created by the accretion from the outer region of the disk or encounters with other stellar systems.Comment: 16 pages, 6 figures; accepted for publication in A
