Oblique-Basis Calculations for Ti
The spectrum and wave functions of Ti are studied in oblique-basis
calculations using spherical and SU(3) shell-model states. Although the results
for Ti are not as good as those previously reported for Mg, due
primarily to the strong spin-orbit interaction that generates significant
splitting of the single-particle energies that breaks the SU(3) symmetry, a
more careful quantitative analysis shows that the oblique-basis concept is
still effective. In particular, a model space that includes a few SU(3)
irreducible representations, namely, the leading irrep (12,0) and next to the
leading irrep (10,1) including its spin S=0 and 1 states, plus spherical
shell-model configurations (SSMC) that have at least two valence nucleons
confined to the orbit -- the SM(2) states, provide results that are
compatible with SSMC with at least one valence nucleon confined to the
orbit -- the SM(3) states.Comment: 3 pages, no figures, contribution to Computational and Group

Radiation induced zero-resistance states in GaAs/AlGaAs heterostructures: Voltage-current characteristics and intensity dependence at the resistance minima
High mobility two-dimensional electron systems exhibit vanishing resistance
over broad magnetic field intervals upon excitation with microwaves, with a
characteristic reduction of the resistance with increasing radiation intensity
at the resistance minima. Here, we report experimental results examining the
voltage - current characteristics, and the resistance at the minima vs. the
microwave power. The findings indicate that a non-linear V-I curve in the
absence of microwave excitation becomes linearized under irradiation, unlike
expectations, and they suggest a similarity between the roles of the radiation
intensity and the inverse temperature.Comment: 3 color figures; publishe
Energy Conversion Alternatives Study (ECAS), General Electric Phase 1. Volume 3: Energy conversion subsystems and components. Part 3: Gasification, process fuels, and balance of plant
Results are presented of an investigation of gasification and clean fuels from coal. Factors discussed include: coal and coal transportation costs; clean liquid and gas fuel process efficiencies and costs; and cost, performance, and environmental intrusion elements of the integrated low-Btu coal gasification system. Cost estimates for the balance-of-plant requirements associated with advanced energy conversion systems utilizing coal or coal-derived fuels are included
Data from tests of a R4 airfoil in the Langley 0.3-meter transonic cryogenic tunnel
Aerodynamic data for the DFVLR R4 airfoil are presented in both graphic and tabular form. The R4 was tested in the Langley 0.3-Meter Transonic Cryogenic Tunnel (TCT) at Mach number from 0.60 to 0.78 at angles of attack from -2.0 to 8.0 degrees. The airfoil was tested at Reynolds numbers of 4, 6, 10, 15, 30, and 40 million based on the 152.32 mm chord
Sound attenuation in the superconducting amorphous alloy ZrTiCuNiBe
The superconducting energy gap and the parameter of the intensity of electron
scattering at two-level systems in amorphous ZrTiCuNiBe are determined from the
results of measurements of sound attenuation. The mechanism of adiabatic
renormalization of the amplitude of coherent tunneling is used for a
quantitative description of the peculiarities of sound absorption in the
vicinity of critical temperature.Comment: 4 pages, LaTeX, 2 Postscript figures corrected, submitted to Low

Demonstration of a 1/4 cycle phase shift in the radiation-induced oscillatory-magnetoresistance in GaAs/AlGaAs devices
We examine the phase and the period of the radiation-induced
oscillatory-magnetoresistance in GaAs/AlGaAs devices utilizing in-situ magnetic
field calibration by Electron Spin Resonance of DiPhenyl-Picryl-Hydrazal. The
results confirm a -independent 1/4 cycle phase shift with respect to the condition for , and they also suggest a small
( 2%) reduction in the effective mass ratio, , with respect
to the standard value for GaAs/AlGaAs devices.Comment: 4 pages, 4 color figure
