    Threshold corrections to rapidity distributions of Z and W^\pm bosons beyond N^2 LO at hadron colliders

    Threshold enhanced perturbative QCD corrections to rapidity distributions of ZZ and W±W^\pm bosons at hadron colliders are presented using the Sudakov resummed cross sections at N3{}^3LO level. We have used renormalisation group invariance and the mass factorisation theorem that these hard scattering cross sections satisfy to construct the QCD amplitudes. We show that these higher order threshold QCD corrections stabilise the theoretical predictions for vector boson production at the LHC under variations of both renormalisation and factorisation scales.Comment: 17 pages, 8 eps figures.     Tuning edge state localization in graphene nanoribbons by in-plane bending

    The electronic properties of graphene are influenced by both geometric confinement and strain. We study the electronic structure of in-plane bent graphene nanoribbons, systems where confinement and strain are combined. To understand its electronic properties, we develop a tight-binding model that has a small computational cost and is based on exponentially decaying hopping and overlap parameters. Using this model, we show that the edge states in zigzag graphene nanoribbons are sensitive to bending and develop an effective dispersion that can be described by a one-dimensional atomic chain model. Because the velocity of the electrons at the edge is proportional to the slope of the dispersion, the edge states become gradually delocalized upon increasing the strength of bending.Comment: 11 pages, 8 figure

The thermodynamic properties of gadolinium are given. A computerized literature search for relevant papers was conducted and is being analyzed. Contact was made with suppliers of superconducting magnets and accessories, magnetic materials, and various types of hardware.     Silicon nanoparticles and interstellar extinction

    To examine a recently proposed hypothesis that silicon nanoparticles are the source of extended red emission (ERE) in the interstellar medium, we performed a detailed modeling of the mean Galactic extinction in the presence of silicon nanoparticles. For this goal we used the appropriate optical constants of nanosized Si, essentially different from those of bulk Si due to quantum confinement. It was found that a dust mixture of silicon nanoparticles, bare graphite grains, silicate core-organic refractory mantle grains and three-layer silicate-water ice-organic refractory grains works well in explaining the extinction and, in addition, results in the acceptable fractions of UV/visible photons absorbed by silicon nanoparticles: 0.071-0.081. Since these fractions barely agree with the fraction of UV/visible photons needed to excite the observed ERE, we conclude that the intrinsic photon conversion efficiency of the photoluminescence by silicon nanoparticles must be near 100%, if they are the source of the ERE.Comment: Latex2e, uses emulateapj.sty (included), multicol.sty, epsf.sty, 6 pages, 3 figures (8 Postscript files), accepted for publication in ApJ Letters, complete Postscript file is also available at http://physics.technion.ac.il/~zubko/eb.html#SNP

    Refraction at Media with Negative Refractive Index

    We show that an electromagnetic (EM) wave undergoes negative refraction at the interface between a positive and negative refractive index material. Finite difference time domain (FDTD) simulations are used to study the time evolution of an EM wave as it hits the interface. The wave is trapped temporarily at the interface and after a long time, the wave front moves eventually in the negative direction. This explains why causality and speed of light are not violated in spite of the negative refraction always present in a negative index material.Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.     FUSE Measurements of Interstellar Fluorine

    The source of fluorine is not well understood, although core-collapse supernovae, Wolf-Rayet stars, and asymptotic giant branch stars have been suggested. A search for evidence of the nu process during Type II supernovae is presented. Absorption from interstellar F I is seen in spectra of HD 208440 and HD 209339A acquired with the Far Ultraviolet Spectroscopic Explorer. In order to extract the column density for F I from the line at 954 A, absorption from H2 has to be modeled and then removed. Our analysis indicates that for H2 column densities less than about 3 x 10^20 cm^-2, the amount of F I can be determined from lambda 954. For these two sight lines, there is no clear indication for enhanced F abundances resulting from the nu process in a region shaped by past supernovae.Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Ap

    L-Convex Polyominoes are Recognizable in Real Time by 2D Cellular Automata

    A polyomino is said to be L-convex if any two of its cells are connected by a 4-connected inner path that changes direction at most once. The 2-dimensional language representing such polyominoes has been recently proved to be recognizable by tiling systems by S. Brocchi, A. Frosini, R. Pinzani and S. Rinaldi. In an attempt to compare recognition power of tiling systems and cellular automata, we have proved that this language can be recognized by 2-dimensional cellular automata working on the von Neumann neighborhood in real time. Although the construction uses a characterization of L-convex polyominoes that is similar to the one used for tiling systems, the real time constraint which has no equivalent in terms of tilings requires the use of techniques that are specific to cellular automata
