Metastability and uniqueness of vortex states at depinning
We present results from numerical simulations of transport of vortices in the
zero-field cooled (ZFC) and the field-cooled (FC) state of a type-II
superconductor. In the absence of an applied current , we find that the FC
state has a lower defect density than the ZFC state, and is stable against
thermal cycling. On the other hand, by cycling , surprisingly we find that
the ZFC state is the stable state. The FC state is metastable as manifested by
increasing to the depinning current , in which case the FC state
evolves into the ZFC state. We also find that all configurations acquire a
unique defect density at the depinning transition independent of the history of
the initial states.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures. Problem of page size correcte
Hadronization of massive quark matter
We present a fast hadronization model for the constituent quark plasma (CQP)
produced in relativistic heavy ion collisions at SPS. The model is based on
rate equations and on an equation of state inspired by the string
phenomenology. This equation of state has a confining character. We display the
time evolution of the relevant physical quantities during the hadronization
process and the final hadron multiplicities. The results indicate that the
hadronization of CQP is fast.Comment: 12 pages, Latex, 2 EPS figures, contribution to the Proceedings of

Reversal-Field Memory in the Hysteresis of Spin Glasses
We report a novel singularity in the hysteresis of spin glasses, the
reversal-field memory effect, which creates a non-analyticity in the
magnetization curves at a particular point related to the history of the
sample. The origin of the effect is due to the existence of a macroscopic
number of "symmetric clusters" of spins associated with a local spin-reversal
symmetry of the Hamiltonian. We use First Order Reversal Curve (FORC) diagrams
to characterize the effect and compare to experimental results on thin magnetic
films. We contrast our results on spin glasses to random magnets and show that
the FORC technique is an effective "magnetic fingerprinting" tool.Comment: 4 pages, 6 figure
Quark coalescence in the mid rapidity region at RHIC
We utilize the ALCOR model for mid-rapidity hadron number predictions at AGS,
SPS and RHIC energies. We present simple fits for the energy dependence of
stopping and quark production.Comment: Talk given at SQM2001, Frankfurt, (LaTeX 8 pages, 5 .ps figs
Analytic Solution of the Pion-Laser Model
Brooding over bosons, wave packets and Bose - Einstein correlations, we find
that a generalization of the pion-laser model for the case of overlapping
wave-packets is analytically solvable with complete n-particle symmetrization.
The effective radius parameter of the two-particle correlation function is
reduced for low values and enlargened for high values of the mean momentum in
the rare gas limiting case, as compared to the case when multi-particle
symmetrization effects are neglected.
These results explicitly depend on the multiplicity, providing a theoretical
basis for event-by-event analysis of high energy heavy ion reactions.Comment: LaTeX, ReVTeX 3.1, 7 pages, uses 1 eps figure and epsfig.sty

Hysteretic Optimization
We propose a new optimization method based on a demagnetization procedure
well known in magnetism. We show how this procedure can be applied as a general
tool to search for optimal solutions in any system where the configuration
space is endowed with a suitable `distance'. We test the new algorithm on
frustrated magnetic models and the traveling salesman problem. We find that the
new method successfully competes with similar basic algorithms such as
simulated annealing.Comment: 5 pages, 5 figure
Dynamic transition in driven vortices across the peak effect in superconductors
We study the zero-temperature dynamic transition from the disordered flow to
an ordered flow state in driven vortices in type-II superconductors. The
transition current is marked by a sharp kink in the
characteristic with a concomitant large increase in the defect concentration.
On increasing magnetic field , the follows the behaviour of the
critical current . Specifically, in the peak effect regime
increases rapidly along with . We also discuss the effect of varying
disorder strength on .Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Self-organized criticality in the hysteresis of the Sherrington - Kirkpatrick model
We study hysteretic phenomena in random ferromagnets. We argue that the angle
dependent magnetostatic (dipolar) terms introduce frustration and long range
interactions in these systems. This makes it plausible that the Sherrington -
Kirkpatrick model may be able to capture some of the relevant physics of these
systems. We use scaling arguments, replica calculations and large scale
numerical simulations to characterize the hysteresis of the zero temperature SK
model. By constructing the distribution functions of the avalanche sizes,
magnetization jumps and local fields, we conclude that the system exhibits
self-organized criticality everywhere on the hysteresis loop.Comment: 4 pages, 4 eps figure

The Effect of Splayed Pins on Vortex Creep and Critical Currents
We study the effects of splayed columnar pins on the vortex motion using
realistic London Langevin simulations. At low currents vortex creep is strongly
suppressed, whereas the critical current j_c is enhanced only moderately.
Splaying the pins generates an increasing energy barrier against vortex
hopping, and leads to the forced entanglement of vortices, both of which
suppress creep efficiently. On the other hand splaying enhances kink nucleation
and introduces intersecting pins, which cut off the energy barriers. Thus the
j_c enhancement is strongly parameter sensitive. We also characterize the angle
dependence of j_c, and the effect of different splaying geometries.Comment: 4 figure
