Quantized Orbits and Resonant Transport
A tight binding representation of the kicked Harper model is used to obtain
an integrable semiclassical Hamiltonian consisting of degenerate "quantized"
orbits. New orbits appear when renormalized Harper parameters cross integer
multiples of . Commensurability relations between the orbit frequencies
are shown to correlate with the emergence of accelerator modes in the classical
phase space of the original kicked problem. The signature of this resonant
transport is seen in both classical and quantum behavior. An important feature
of our analysis is the emergence of a natural scaling relating classical and

Study on Basic Mechanism of Reactive Armour
Two basic mechanisms which operate in the functioning of reactive armour are presented. Both the explosive effect and cutting of metal plates by a jet have been investigated. The angle of attack and the confinement of the explosive have been found most significant factors in reducing the penetrating power of the jet. The effect of detonating explosives has been investigated with radiography. Some of the significant effects, like detonation of explosive by the impact of the jet, expansion of covering plates, disturbance in coherence and reduction in the penetration of the jet have been observed. It is found that the jet penetration in a stack of mild steel plates is reduced to 30 per cent of its blank penetration in present set-ups. A theoretical model has been conceived to study the interaction of moving plates and the jet. The critical thickness and surface cut in plates have been calculated
Synthesis of novel 3-arylcyclopenta[c]quinolines via acid-induced domino cyclization of 2-arylamino-2-methylthioethenyl 2-arylcyclopropyl ketones
A novel acid-induced domino cyclization of N,S-anilinoacetals of type 3 derived from 2- arylcyclopropyl ketones, is reported which yields a wide range of substituted- and fused- 3- arylcyclopenta[c]quinolines 6 with concomitant formation of a cyclopentane and a quinoline ring
Semiclassical description of multiphoton processes
We analyze strong field atomic dynamics semiclassically, based on a full
time-dependent description with the Hermann-Kluk propagator. From the
properties of the exact classical trajectories, in particular the accumulation
of action in time, the prominent features of above threshold ionization (ATI)
and higher harmonic generation (HHG) are proven to be interference phenomena.
They are reproduced quantitatively in the semiclassical approximation.
Moreover, the behavior of the action of the classical trajectories supports the
so called strong field approximation which has been devised and postulated for

Influence of grain-refiner addition on the morphology of fe-bearing intermetallics in a semi-solid processed Al-Mg-Si alloy
© The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and ASM International 2013The three-dimensional morphologies of the Fe-bearing intermetallics in a semisolid-processed Al-Mg-Si alloy were examined after extracting the intermetallics. α -AlFeSi and β-AlFeSi are the major Fe-bearing intermetallics. Addition of Al-Ti-B grain refiner typically promotes β-AlFeSi formation. β-AlFeSi was observed with a flat, plate-like morphology with angular edges in the alloy with and without grain refiner, whereas α -AlFeSi was observed as "flower"-like morphology in the alloy with grain refiner. © 2013 The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society and ASM International
Surface effects on nanowire transport: numerical investigation using the Boltzmann equation
A direct numerical solution of the steady-state Boltzmann equation in a
cylindrical geometry is reported. Finite-size effects are investigated in large
semiconducting nanowires using the relaxation-time approximation. A nanowire is
modelled as a combination of an interior with local transport parameters
identical to those in the bulk, and a finite surface region across whose width
the carrier density decays radially to zero. The roughness of the surface is
incorporated by using lower relaxation-times there than in the interior.
An argument supported by our numerical results challenges a commonly used
zero-width parametrization of the surface layer. In the non-degenerate limit,
appropriate for moderately doped semiconductors, a finite surface width model
does produce a positive longitudinal magneto-conductance, in agreement with
existing theory. However, the effect is seen to be quite small (a few per cent)
for realistic values of the wire parameters even at the highest practical
magnetic fields. Physical insights emerging from the results are discussed.Comment: 15 pages, 7 figure
Berry effect in acoustical polarization transport in phononic crystals
We derive the semiclassical equations of motion of a transverse acoustical
wave packet propagating in a phononic crystal subject to slowly varying
perturbations. The formalism gives rise to Berry effect terms in the equations
of motion, manifested as the Rytov polarization rotation law and the
polarization-dependent Hall effect. We show that the formalism is also
applicable to the case of non-periodic inhomogeneous media, yielding explicit
expressions for the Berry effect terms.Comment: To appear in JETP Let
Effect of chronic administration of 7α-methyl-19-nortestosterone on serum testosterone, number of spermatozoa and fertility in adult male bonnet monkeys (Macaca radiata)
Hormonal approaches to male contraception that are based on the suppression of LH secretion require androgen replacement treatment to maintain sexual behaviour and secondary sexual characteristics. Androgen supplementation not only involves large and frequent doses of testosterone esters but also results in undesirable effects on the prostate gland. In an attempt to avoid such problems, a synthetic androgen, 7α-methyl-19-nortestosterone (MENT), which is much more potent than testosterone, has been developed. In the present study, MENT was administered at different doses (25, 50, 100, 300 and 1000 μg day−1 either alone or in combination with oestradiol via Silastic implants for a specified period to adult male bonnet monkeys (Macaca radiata). Blood and semen samples were collected at specific intervals and analysed for serum testosterone and seminal parameters, respectively. The results of the present study clearly indicate that administration of MENT at all doses tested results in suppression of the nocturnal surge of testosterone (by day 3), as well as a decrease in the number of spermatozoa (by day 45). Co-administration of oestradiol resulted in a reduction in the dose of MENT required to suppress the nocturnal surge. None of the male bonnet monkeys treated with MENT were able to impregnate females, clearly demonstrating the efficacy of MENT in blocking fertility in male bonnet monkeys
The pre-WDVV ring of physics and its topology
We show how a simplicial complex arising from the WDVV
(Witten-Dijkgraaf-Verlinde-Verlinde) equations of string theory is the
Whitehouse complex. Using discrete Morse theory, we give an elementary proof
that the Whitehouse complex is homotopy equivalent to a wedge of
spheres of dimension . We also verify the Cohen-Macaulay
property. Additionally, recurrences are given for the face enumeration of the
complex and the Hilbert series of the associated pre-WDVV ring.Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures, 2 table
Studies of the Anomalous Hall Effect and Magnetic Structure of Nd2Mo2O7 -Test of the Chirality Mechanism-
Neutron scattering studies have been carried out under the magnetic fields
H//[0_11] and H//[001] on a single crystal of Nd2Mo2O7, whose Hall
resistivity(rhoH) exhibits quite unusual H- and temperature(T)-dependences.
Material parameters such as the single ion anisotropies of the Mo- and Nd-
moments and exchange coupling constants among the Mo-Mo, Mo-Nd and Nd-Nd
moments, have been determined to reproduce various kinds of experimental data
taken as a function of H and T. For example, the neutron Bragg intensities,
magnetization curves and the magnetic specific heats have been reproduced by
the common parameters. By using the magnetic structure reproduced by these
parameters, the spin chirality (chi) of Mo spins or the fictitious magnetic
flux Phi proportional to chi has been calculated as a function of H and T by
using equation chi=, where the bracket means the statistical
average. (Note that we do not use the equation chi=x, because the
local nature of the chirality should be correctly considered.) Comparing the
calculated results with the observed rhoH, we can conclude that the unusual
behavior of rH cannot be understood consistently only by the chirality
