    One pion events by atmospheric neutrinos: A three flavor analysis

    We study the one-pion events produced via neutral current (NC) and charged current (CC) interactions by the atmospheric neutrinos. We analyze the ratios of these events in the framework of oscillations between three neutrino flavors. The ratios of the CC events induced by νe\nu_e to that of the NC events and a similar ratio defined with νμ\nu_\mu help us in distinguishing the different regions of the neutrino parameter space.Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures (separate postscript files

Copyright @ 2009 The Royal Society.Packaging waste forms a significant part of municipal solid waste and has caused increasing environmental concerns, resulting in a strengthening of various regulations aimed at reducing the amounts generated. Among other materials, a wide range of oil-based polymers is currently used in packaging applications. These are virtually all non-biodegradable, and some are difficult to recycle or reuse due to being complex composites having varying levels of contamination. Recently, significant progress has been made in the development of biodegradable plastics, largely from renewable natural resources, to produce biodegradable materials with similar functionality to that of oil-based polymers. The expansion in these bio-based materials has several potential benefits for greenhouse gas balances and other environmental impacts over whole life cycles and in the use of renewable, rather than finite resources. It is intended that use of biodegradable materials will contribute to sustainability and reduction in the environmental impact associated with disposal of oil-based polymers. The diversity of biodegradable materials and their varying properties makes it difficult to make simple, generic assessments such as biodegradable products are all ‘good’ or petrochemical-based products are all ‘bad’. This paper discusses the potential impacts of biodegradable packaging materials and their waste management, particularly via composting. It presents the key issues that inform judgements of the benefits these materials have in relation to conventional, petrochemical-based counterparts. Specific examples are given from new research on biodegradability in simulated ‘home’ composting systems. It is the view of the authors that biodegradable packaging materials are most suitable for single-use disposable applications where the post-consumer waste can be locally composted.EPSR

    Mutations in the p53 tumour-suppressor gene are among the most common genetic alterations in human cancers. In the present study we analysed the mutations in the p53 tumor-suppressor gene in 25 primary and 20 metastatic human prostate cancer specimens. DNA extracted from the paraffin-embedded sections was amplified by hot-start polymerase chain reaction, and p53 gene mutations in the conserved mid-region (exons 4-9) were examined using single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) analysis and immunohistochemistry. In the present study, we used a novel hot-start PCR-SSCP technique using DNA Taq polymerase antibody, which eliminates primer-dimers and non-specific products. Because of this new technique, the results of PCR-SSCP showed very high resolution. Polymerase chain reaction products were sequenced directly for point mutations for the p53 gene. Mutations were found in 2 out of 25 primary prostate cancers (8%) and 4 out of 20 metastatic cancers (20%). Mutations were observed exclusively in exon 7 and not in exons 4, 5, 6, 8 or 9.     Lensing and the Centers of Distant Early-Type Galaxies

    Gravitational lensing provides a unique probe of the inner 10-1000 pc of distant galaxies (z=0.2-1). Lens theory predicts that every strong lens system should have a faint image near the center of the lens galaxy, which should be visible in radio lenses but have not been observed. We study these ``core'' images using models derived from the stellar distributions in nearby early-type galaxies. We find that realistic galaxies predict a remarkably wide range of core images, with lensing magnifications spanning some six orders of magnitude. More concentrated galaxies produce fainter core images, although not with any simple, quantitative, model independent relation. Some real galaxies have diffuse cores and predict bright core images (magnification mu>~0.1), but more common are galaxies that predict faint core images (mu<~0.001). Thus, stellar mass distributions alone are probably concentrated enough to explain the lack of observed core images, and may require observational sensitivity to improve by an order of magnitude before detections of core images become common. Two-image lenses will tend to have brighter core images than four-image lenses, so they will be the better targets for finding core images and exploiting these tools for studying the central mass distributions of distant galaxies.Comment: 13 pages, emulateapj; submitted to Ap

    High-Redshift Galaxies: Their Predicted Size and Surface Brightness Distributions and Their Gravitational Lensing Probability

    Direct observations of the first generation of luminous objects will likely become feasible over the next decade. The advent of the Next Generation Space Telescope (NGST) will allow imaging of numerous galaxies and mini-quasars at redshifts z>5. We apply semi-analytic models of structure formation to estimate the rate of multiple imaging of these sources by intervening gravitational lenses. Popular CDM models for galaxy formation yield a lensing optical depth of about 1% for sources at redshift 10. The expected slope of the luminosity function of the early sources implies an additional magnification bias of about 5, bringing the fraction of lensed sources at z=10 to about 5%. We estimate the angular size distribution of high-redshift disk galaxies and find that most of them are more extended than the resolution limit of NGST, roughly 0.06 arcseconds. We also show that there is only a modest redshift evolution in the mean surface brightness of galaxies at z>2. The expected increase by 1-2 orders of magnitude in the number of resolved sources on the sky, due to observations with NGST, will dramatically improve upon the statistical significance of existing weak lensing measurements.     Pulsar Radio Emission Altitude from Curvature Radiation

    We assume that the relativistic sources moving along the dipolar magnetic field lines emit curvature radiation. The beamed emission occurs in the direction of tangents to the field lines, and to receive it, the sight line must align with the tangent within the beaming angle 1/gamma, where gamma is the particle Lorentz factor. By solving the viewing geometry in an inclined and rotating dipole magnetic field, we show that, at any given pulse phase, observer tends to receive radiation only from the specific heights allowed by the geometry. We find outer conal components are emitted at higher altitudes compared to inner components including the core. At any pulse phase, low frequency emission comes from higher altitudes than high frequency emission. We have modeled the emission heights of pulse components of PSR B0329+54, and estimated field line curvature radii and particle Lorentz factors in the emission regions.Comment: 14 pages, 3 figures.     Identifying Gamma-Ray Burst Remnants in Nearby Galaxies

    We study the spectral signatures arising from cooling and recombination of an interstellar medium whose equilibrium state has been altered over \sim 100 pc by the radiation of a Gamma-Ray Burst (GRB) and its afterglow. We identify signatures in the line diagnostics which are indicative of a photo-ionized GRB remnant which is \la 5 x 10^4 years old . We estimate that at least a few such remnants should be detectable in the Virgo cluster of galaxies. If the gamma-ray emission from GRBs is beamed to a fraction f_b of their sky, then the expected number of Virgo remnants is larger by a factor of f_b^{-1}. Virgo remnants can be resolved with arcsecond imaging, and are likely to be center-filled using narrow-band filters of high ionization lines (such as [O III] \lambda5007 or He II \lambda4686), and limb-brightened for low-ionization lines (such as [S II] \lambda6717). The non-relativistic blast wave might be visible separately, since it does not reach the outer edge of these young photo-ionized remnants. The remnants should show evidence for ionization cones if the prompt or afterglow UV emission from GRBs is beamed.Comment: 21 pages, 10 figures, submitted to Ap
