Domain Wall Fermions with Exact Chiral Symmetry
We show how the standard domain wall action can be simply modified to allow
arbitrarily exact chiral symmetry at finite fifth dimensional extent. We note
that the method can be used for both quenched and dynamical calculations. We
test the method using smooth and thermalized gauge field configurations. We
also make comparisons of the performance (cost) of the domain wall operator for
spectroscopy compared to other methods such as the overlap-Dirac operator and
find both methods are comparable in cost.Comment: revtex, 37 pages, 11 color postscript figure
Muon and neutrino fluxes
The result of a new calculation of the atmospheric muon and neutrino fluxes and the energy spectrum of muon-neutrinos produced in individual extensive air showers (EAS) initiated by proton and gamma-ray primaries is reported. Also explained is the possibility of detecting atmospheric nu sub mu's due to gamma-rays from these sources
Theoretical and experimental investigations of upper atmosphere dynamics
A brief overview of the significant contributions made to the understanding of the dynamics of the Earth's upper atmosphere is presented, including the addition of winds and diffusion to the semi-empirical Global Reference Atmospheric Model developed for the design phase of the Space Shuttle, reviews of turbulence in the lower thermosphere, the dynamics of the equatorial mesopause, stratospheric warming effects on mesopause level dynamics, and the relevance of these studies to the proposed Middle Atmosphere Program (1982-85). A chronological bibliography, with abstracts of all papers published, is also included
The western Wabigoon Subprovince, Superior Province, Canada: Archean greenstone succession in rifted basement complex
The Wabigoon Subprovince, interposed between the predominantly metasedimentary-plutonic and gneissic English River and Quetico Subprovinces to the north and south respectively, exposed Archean greenstone and granitoid rocks for a strike length of greater than 700 km. Based on predominating rock types, the western part of the subprovince is divided into two terrains: the northern Wabigoon volcano-sedimentary and pluonic terrain (NWW) and the Wabigoon Diapiric Axis terrain (WDA). Both the NWW and WDA are described according to volcanic sequence, geological faults, chemical composition and evolutionary history
The muon content of gamma-ray showers
The result of a calculation of the expected number of muons in gamma ray initiated and cosmic ray initiated air showers using a realistic model of hadronic collisions in an effort to understand the available experimental results and to assess the feasibility of using the muon content of showers as a veto to reject cosmic ray initiated showers in ultra-high energy gamma ray astronomy are reported. The possibility of observing very-high energy gamma-ray sources by detecting narrow angle anisotropies in the high energy muon background radiation are considered
First Calculation of Hyperon Axial Couplings from Lattice QCD
In this work, we report the first lattice calculation of hyperon axial
couplings, using the 2+1-flavor MILC configurations and domain-wall fermion
valence quarks. Both the and axial couplings are computed for
the first time in lattice QCD. In particular we find that and .Comment: 5 pages, 2 figure
Mixed Meson Masses with Domain-Wall Valence and Staggered Sea Fermions
Mixed action lattice calculations allow for an additive lattice spacing
dependent mass renormalization of mesons composed of one sea and one valence
quark, regardless of the type of fermion discretization methods used in the
valence and sea sectors. The value of the mass renormalization depends upon the
lattice actions used. This mixed meson mass shift is an important lattice
artifact to determine for mixed action calculations; because it modifies the
pion mass, it plays a central role in the low energy dynamics of all hadronic
correlation functions. We determine the leading order, , and
next to leading order, , additive mass shift of
\textit{valence-sea} mesons for a mixed lattice action with domain-wall valence
fermions and rooted staggered sea fermions, relevant to the majority of current
large scale mixed action lattice efforts. We find that on the asqtad improved
coarse MILC lattices, this additive mass shift is well parameterized in lattice
units by , which in physical
units, using fm, corresponds to . In terms of the mixed action effective field
theory parameters, the corresponding mass shift is given by at leading order plus
next-to-leading order corrections including the necessary chiral logarithms for
this mixed action calculation, determined in this work. Within the precision of
our calculation, one can not distinguish between the full next-to-leading order
effective field theory analysis of this additive mixed meson mass shift and the
parameterization given above.Comment: 28 pages, 3 figures, 5 table
Parallel density matrix propagation in spin dynamics simulations
Several methods for density matrix propagation in distributed computing
environments, such as clusters and graphics processing units, are proposed and
evaluated. It is demonstrated that the large communication overhead associated
with each propagation step (two-sided multiplication of the density matrix by
an exponential propagator and its conjugate) may be avoided and the simulation
recast in a form that requires virtually no inter-thread communication. Good
scaling is demonstrated on a 128-core (16 nodes, 8 cores each) cluster.Comment: Submitted for publicatio
Mass-spectrometric study of the rhenium-oxygen system
Rhenium, having the second highest melting point among the metals, is used for refractory containers. Thermodynamic values for rhenium oxide is determined by mass spectrometry and X ray diffraction
