Maximized Posteriori Attributes Selection from Facial Salient Landmarks for Face Recognition
This paper presents a robust and dynamic face recognition technique based on
the extraction and matching of devised probabilistic graphs drawn on SIFT
features related to independent face areas. The face matching strategy is based
on matching individual salient facial graph characterized by SIFT features as
connected to facial landmarks such as the eyes and the mouth. In order to
reduce the face matching errors, the Dempster-Shafer decision theory is applied
to fuse the individual matching scores obtained from each pair of salient
facial features. The proposed algorithm is evaluated with the ORL and the IITK
face databases. The experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness and
potential of the proposed face recognition technique also in case of partially
occluded faces.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figure
Dirac parameters and topological phase diagram of Pb1-xSnxSe from magneto-spectroscopy
Pb1-xSnxSe hosts 3D massive Dirac fermions across the entire composition
range for which the crystal structure is cubic. In this work, we present a
comprehensive experimental mapping of the 3D band structure parameters of
Pb1-xSnxSe as a function of composition and temperature. We cover a parameter
space spanning the band inversion that yields its topological crystalline
insulator phase. A non-closure of the energy gap is evidenced in the vicinity
of this phase transition. Using magnetooptical Landau level spectroscopy, we
determine the energy gap, Dirac velocity, anisotropy factor and topological
character of Pb1-xSnxSe epilayers grown by molecular beam epitaxy on BaF2
(111). Our results are evidence that Pb1-xSnxSe is a model system to study
topological phases and the nature of the phase transition.Comment: Submitte
Stochastic evolutions in superspace and superconformal field theory
Some stochastic evolutions of conformal maps can be described by SLE and may
be linked to conformal field theory via stochastic differential equations and
singular vectors in highest-weight modules of the Virasoro algebra. Here we
discuss how this may be extended to superconformal maps of N=1 superspace with
links to superconformal field theory and singular vectors of the N=1
superconformal algebra in the Neveu-Schwarz sector.Comment: 13 pages, LaTe
Laboratory Rearing of \u3ci\u3eLycaeides Melissa Samuelis\u3c/i\u3e (Lepidoptera: Lycaenidae), An Endangered Butterfly in Michigan
The Karner blue butterfly (Lycaeides melissa samuelis) is listed as a federally endangered species in the United States. It occurs in oak savanna and pine barren habitats from eastern Minnesota to New Hampshire. In 1994, we successfully reared Karner blue larvae under controlled laboratory conditions for experimental purposes, and report on those rearing methods here. We collected 20 female Karner blue adults of the spring generation from two areas in Michigan, and housed them in cages in an environmental chamber at 240 -26°C for 5 days. The female butterflies produced 154 eggs, of which 72 hatched in an average of 4.5 days, and 68 first instars survived. Eggs, larvae and pupae were kept in a growth chamber at 24°C. Developmental time from egg to adult averaged 26 days; the average duration of each instar ranged from 3 to 4 days, and the average pupal duration was 8 days. Thirty three lab- oratory-reared Karner blue larvae successfully completed the 4 instars, and were released as adults into maternal collection sites. Laboratory rearing may be a viable means of providing Karner blue individuals for reintroduction into areas where the species is extirpated, for supplementation of small populations, or for research. Ultimately, such methods may become an integral part in the recovery of this and other rare invertebrate species
Do antibiotics interfere with the efficacy of oral contraceptives?
Among antibiotics, only rifampin has been demonstrated to interfere with the effectiveness of oral contraceptives (OCs) (strength of recommendation [SOR]: C, limited case series). There is little convincing evidence to show a systematic interaction between other antibiotics and oral contraceptive steroids (SOR: B, based on systematic reviews, case reports, and pharmacologic studies). However, current studies may not have separately evaluated the minority of women whose metabolism of contraceptive steroids makes them more vulnerable to OC failure. Given the significant consequences of unintended pregnancy, some experts recommend a conservative approach, including patient education and backup forms of birth control (SOR: C, expert opinion)
Disorder suppression and precise conductance quantization in constrictions of PbTe quantum wells
Conductance quantization was measured in submicron constrictions of PbTe,
patterned into narrow,12 nm wide quantum wells deposited between
PbEuTe barriers. Because the quantum confinement imposed by
the barriers is much stronger than the lateral one, the one-dimensional
electron energy level structure is very similar to that usually met in
constrictions of AlGaAs/GaAs heterostructures. However, in contrast to any
other system studied so far, we observe precise conductance quantization in
units, {\it despite of significant amount of charged defects in the
vicinity of the constriction}. We show that such extraordinary results is a
consequence of the paraelectric properties of PbTe, namely, the suppression of
long-range tails of the Coulomb potentials due to the huge dielectric constant.Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures, submitted to Phys. Rev.
Imaging and manipulation of skyrmion lattice domains in Cu2OSeO3
Nanoscale chiral skyrmions in noncentrosymmetric helimagnets are promising
binary state variables in high-density, low-energy nonvolatile memory.
Skyrmions are ubiquitous as an ordered, single-domain lattice phase, which
makes it difficult to write information unless they are spatially broken up
into smaller units, each representing a bit. Thus, the formation and
manipulation of skyrmion lattice domains is a prerequisite for memory
applications. Here, using an imaging technique based on resonant magnetic x-ray
diffraction, we demonstrate the mapping and manipulation of skyrmion lattice
domains in Cu2OSeO3. The material is particularly interesting for applications
owing to its insulating nature, allowing for electric field-driven domain
manipulation.Comment: 4 pages, 3 figure
Senior Programmers: Characteristics of Elderly Users from Stack Overflow
In this paper we presents results of research about elderly users of Stack
Overflow (Question and Answer portal for programmers). They have different
roles, different main activities and different habits. They are an important
part of the community, as they tend to have higher reputation and they like to
share their knowledge. This is a great example of possible way of keeping
elderly people active and helpful for society
