    For over twenty years we have been talking about a timber shortage,- of the evils of destructive lumbering and of fire. Many bulletins have been published and some have proved interesting and intelligible to the common man. We have lectured and given personal service. To a limited extent laws have been passed which were intended to encourage people to carry out the principles of forestry. These efforts have been aided by the increasing cost of lumber, until today there is a widespread interest in our forest resources. The public is beginning to realize that if we are cutting our timber four times as fast as it is being grown, we must be rapidly approaching the jumping-off place. But this idea has not stirred to action the owners of many acres of timberland. As yet, mighty little forestry is being practiced. How are we as foresters going to cause forestry to be practiced on American forest lands

    Analysing the impact of iron dysmetabolism on regional metal ion distribution in the brain

    An Iron Overload and an H-Ferritin Deficient Mouse Model were used to examine the impact of disrupted iron metabolism on the brain. Brain sections were imaged and compared using Synchrotron ÎŒXRF spectroscopy. Quantitative measurement of the relative metal ion concentrations for iron, copper and zinc were made across selected regions of interest in the brain. It was generally found that metal ion concentrations of iron and zinc decreased in specific regions in the Iron Overload condition compared with the control, with copper increasing in only one region. Few regions differed in metal ion concentration between the H-Ferritin Deficient Model and the control. The three conditions exhibited similar / identical results for metal ion concentrations in many brain regions, indicating the validity of the method used for comparison between samples.     Rigid surface operators and S-duality: some proposals

    We study surface operators in the N=4 supersymmetric Yang-Mills theories with gauge groups SO(n) and Sp(2n). As recently shown by Gukov and Witten these theories have a class of rigid surface operators which are expected to be related by S-duality. The rigid surface operators are of two types, unipotent and semisimple. We make explicit proposals for how the S-duality map should act on unipotent surface operators.     A New Ant Species of the Genus Tetramorium Mayr, 1855 (Hymenoptera: Formicidae) from Saudi Arabia, with a Revised Key to the Arabian Species

    Tetramorium amalae sp. n. is described and illustrated from Saudi Arabia based on two worker caste specimens collected in Al Bahah region. The new species belongs to the T. shilohense group and appears to be closely related to T. dysderke Bolton from Nigeria. T. amalae is distinguished by having well-developed frontal carinae, smaller eyes, greater head length and width, greater pronotal width, and the petiole node is longer than broad. Tetramorium latinode Collingwood & Agosti is recorded for the first time from Saudi Arabia and for only the second time since the original description. The worker caste of T. latinode is redescribed and illustrated using scanning electron micrographs to facilitate recognition and the gyne is described for the first time with observations given on species relationships, biology and habitat. A revised key to the nineteen Tetramorium species recorded from Arabian Peninsula based on worker castes is provided. Tetramorium bicarinatum (Nylander) is recorded for the first time from Saudi Arabia. It is suggested that T. amalae and T. latinode are endemic to the Arabian Peninsula

    Multiple Hamiltonian structure of Bogoyavlensky-Toda lattices

    This paper is mainly a review of the multi--Hamiltonian nature of Toda and generalized Toda lattices corresponding to the classical simple Lie groups but it includes also some new results. The areas investigated include master symmetries, recursion operators, higher Poisson brackets, invariants and group symmetries for the systems. In addition to the positive hierarchy we also consider the negative hierarchy which is crucial in establishing the bi--Hamiltonian structure for each particular simple Lie group. Finally, we include some results on point and Noether symmetries and an interesting connection with the exponents of simple Lie groups. The case of exceptional simple Lie groups is still an open problem.Comment: 65 pages, 67 reference

    Resolution of null fiber and conormal bundles on the Lagrangian Grassmannian

    We study the null fiber of a moment map related to dual pairs. We construct an equivariant resolution of singularities of the null fiber, and get conormal bundles of closed KC K_C -orbits in the Lagrangian Grassmannian as the categorical quotient. The conormal bundles thus obtained turn out to be a resolution of singularities of the closure of nilpotent KC K_C -orbits, which is a "quotient" of the resolution of the null fiber.Comment: 17 pages; completely revised and add reference

    Multi-black holes from nilpotent Lie algebra orbits

    For N \ge 2 supergravities, BPS black hole solutions preserving four supersymmetries can be superposed linearly, leading to well defined solutions containing an arbitrary number of such BPS black holes at arbitrary positions. Being stationary, these solutions can be understood via associated non-linear sigma models over pseudo-Riemaniann spaces coupled to Euclidean gravity in three spatial dimensions. As the main result of this paper, we show that whenever this pseudo-Riemanniann space is an irreducible symmetric space G/H*, the most general solutions of this type can be entirely characterised and derived from the nilpotent orbits of the associated Lie algebra Lie(G). This technique also permits the explicit computation of non-supersymmetric extremal solutions which cannot be obtained by truncation to N=2 supergravity theories. For maximal supergravity, we not only recover the known BPS solutions depending on 32 independent harmonic functions, but in addition find a set of non-BPS solutions depending on 29 harmonic functions. While the BPS solutions can be understood within the appropriate N=2 truncation of N=8 supergravity, the general non-BPS solutions require the whole field content of the theory.Comment: Corrected version for publication, references adde

    Non-Supersymmetric Attractor Flow in Symmetric Spaces

    We derive extremal black hole solutions for a variety of four dimensional models which, after Kaluza-Klein reduction, admit a description in terms of 3D gravity coupled to a sigma model with symmetric target space. The solutions are in correspondence with certain nilpotent generators of the isometry group. In particular, we provide the exact solution for a non-BPS black hole with generic charges and asymptotic moduli in N=2 supergravity coupled to one vector multiplet. Multi-centered solutions can also be generated with this technique. It is shown that the non-supersymmetric solutions lack the intricate moduli space of bound configurations that are typical of the supersymmetric case.Comment: 50 pages, 4 figures; v2: Reference added.
