Acute kidney injury in the elderly: predisposition to chronic kidney disease and vice versa.
There have been considerable advances in the past few years in our understanding of how chronic kidney disease (CKD) predisposes to acute kidney injury (AKI) and vice versa. This review shows, however, that few studies have focused on the elderly or conducted stratified analysis by age. It does appear that elderly patients with estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) 45-59 ml/min/1.73 m(2) are at higher risk for AKI compared with their counterparts with eGFR >60 ml/min/1.73 m(2). This is a similar relationship to that seen in younger patients, although effect size appears smaller. As the incidence of AKI has been increasing over the past several years, the proportion of elderly patients surviving after AKI has also been increasing. Since AKI heightens the risk for the development and acceleration of CKD, this implies significant public health concerns with regard to the absolute number of elderly persons developing incident CKD
The Ecosystem Approach to Fisheries: Issues, Terminology, Principles, Institutional Foundations, Implementation and Outlook
Ecosystems are complex and dynamic natural units that produce goods and services beyond those of benefit to fisheries. Because fisheries have a direct impact on the ecosystem, which is also impacted by other human activities, they need to be managed in an ecosystem context. The meaning of the terms 'ecosystem management', 'ecosystem based management', 'ecosystem approach to fisheries'(EAF), etc., are still not universally defined and progressively evolving. The justification of EAF is evident in the characteristics of an exploited ecosystem and the impacts resulting from fisheries and other activities. The rich set of international agreements of relevance to EAF contains a large number of principles and conceptual objectives. Both provide a fundamental guidance and a significant challenge for the implementation of EAF. The available international instruments also provide the institutional foundations for EAF. The FAO Code of Conduct for Responsible Fisheries is particularly important in this respect and contains provisions for practically all aspects of the approach. One major difficulty in defining EAF lies precisely in turning the available concepts and principles into operational objectives from which an EAF management plan would more easily be developed. The paper discusses these together with the types of action needed to achieve them. Experience in EAF implementation is still limited but some issues are already apparent, e.g. in added complexity, insufficient capacity, slow implementation, need for a pragmatic approach, etc. It is argued, in conclusion, that the future of EAF and fisheries depends on the way in which the two fundamental concepts of fisheries management and ecosystem management, and their respective stakeholders, will join efforts or collide
The magnetic and crystal structures of Sr2IrO4: A neutron diffraction study
We report a single-crystal neutron diffraction study of the layered . This work unambiguously determines the magnetic structure of the
system and reveals that the spin orientation rigidly tracks the staggered
rotation of the octahedra in . The long-range
antiferromagnetic order has a canted spin configuration with an ordered moment
of 0.208(3) /Ir site within the basal plane; a detailed examination of
the spin canting yields 0.202(3) and 0.049(2) /site for the a axis and
the b axis, respectively. It is intriguing that forbidden nuclear reflections
of space group are also observed in a wide temperature range from 4
K to 600 K, which suggests a reduced crystal structure symmetry. This
neutron-scattering work provides a direct, well-refined experimental
characterization of the magnetic and crystal structures that are crucial to the
understanding of the unconventional magnetism exhibited in this unusual

On The Orbital Evolution of Jupiter Mass Protoplanet Embedded in A Self-Gravity Disk
We performed a series of hydro-dynamic simulations to investigate the orbital
migration of a Jovian planet embedded in a proto-stellar disk. In order to take
into account of the effect of the disk's self gravity, we developed and adopted
an \textbf{Antares} code which is based on a 2-D Godunov scheme to obtain the
exact Reimann solution for isothermal or polytropic gas, with non-reflecting
boundary conditions. Our simulations indicate that in the study of the runaway
(type III) migration, it is important to carry out a fully self consistent
treatment of the gravitational interaction between the disk and the embedded
planet. Through a series of convergence tests, we show that adequate numerical
resolution, especially within the planet's Roche lobe, critically determines
the outcome of the simulations. We consider a variety of initial conditions and
show that isolated, non eccentric protoplanet planets do not undergo type III
migration. We attribute the difference between our and previous simulations to
the contribution of a self consistent representation of the disk's self
gravity. Nevertheless, type III migration cannot be completely suppressed and
its onset requires finite amplitude perturbations such as that induced by
planet-planet interaction. We determine the radial extent of type III migration

Bioproduction of L-piperazic acid in gram scale using Aureobasidium melanogenum
Currently, piperazic acid is chemically synthesized using ecologically unfriendly processes. Microbial synthesis from glucose is an attractive alternative to chemical synthesis. In this study, we report the production of L-piperazic acid via microbial fermentation with the first engineered fungal strain of Aureobasidium melanogenum; this strain was constructed by chassis development, genetic element reconstitution and optimization, synthetic rewiring and constitutive genetic circuit reconstitution, to build a robust L-piperazic acid synthetic cascade. These genetic modifications enable A. melanogenum to directly convert glucose to L-piperazic acid without relying on the use of either chemically synthesized precursors or harsh conditions. This bio-based process overcomes the shortcomings of the conventional synthesis routes. The ultimately engineered strain is a very high-efficient cell factory that can excrete 1.12 ± 0.05 g l-1 of L-piperazic acid after a 120-h 10.0-l fed-batch fermentation; this is the highest titre of L-piperazic acid reported using a microbial cell factory
Structure symmetry determination and magnetic evolution in
We use single-crystal neutron diffraction to determine the crystal structure
symmetry and the magnetic evolution in the rhodium doped iridates (). Throughout this doping range, the
crystal structure retains a tetragonal symmetry (space group ) with two
distinct magnetic Ir sites in the unit cell forming staggered
rotation. Upon Rh doping, the magnetic order is suppressed and the magnetic
moment of Ir is reduced from 0.21 /Ir for to 0.18 /Ir for . The magnetic structure at is different from
