Intrinsic quadrupole moment of the nucleon
We address the question of the intrinsic quadrupole moment Q_0 of the nucleon
in various models. All models give a positive intrinsic quadrupole moment for
the proton. This corresponds to a prolate deformation. We also calculate the
intrinsic quadrupole moment of the Delta(1232). All our models lead to a
negative intrinsic quadrupole moment of the Delta corresponding to an oblate

An Evaluated Certification Services System for the German National Root CA - Legally Binding and Trustworthy Transactions in E-Business and E-Government
National Root CAs enable legally binding E-Business and E-Government
transactions. This is a report about the development, the evaluation and the
certification of the new certification services system for the German National
Root CA. We illustrate why a new certification services system was necessary,
and which requirements to the new system existed. Then we derive the tasks to
be done from the mentioned requirements. After that we introduce the initial
situation at the beginning of the project. We report about the very process and
talk about some unfamiliar situations, special approaches and remarkable
experiences. Finally we present the ready IT system and its impact to

Baryon Charge Radii and Quadrupole Moments in the 1/N_c Expansion: The 3-Flavor Case
We develop a straightforward method to compute charge radii and quadrupole
moments for baryons both with and without strangeness, when the number of QCD
color charges is N_c. The minimal assumption of the single-photon exchange
ansatz implies that only two operators are required to describe these baryon
observables. Our results are presented so that SU(3) flavor and isospin
symmetry breaking can be introduced according to any desired specification,
although we also present results obtained from two patterns suggested by the
quark model with gluon exchange interactions. The method also permits to
extract a number of model-independent relations; a sample is r^2_Lambda / r_n^2
= 3/(N_c+3), independent of SU(3) symmetry breaking.Comment: 30 pages, no figures, REVTeX
Role of the relative phase in the merging of two independent Bose-Einstein condensates
We study the merging of two independent Bose-Einstein condensates with
arbitrary initial phase difference, in the framework of a one-dimensional
time-dependent Gross-Pitaevskii model. The role of the initial phase difference
in the process is discussed, and various types of phase-sensitive excitations

Passage-time statistics of superradiant light pulses from Bose-Einstein condensates
We discuss the passage-time statistics of superradiant light pulses generated
during the scattering of laser light from an elongated atomic Bose-Einstein
condensate. Focusing on the early-stage of the phenomenon, we analyze the
corresponding probability distributions and their scaling behaviour with
respect to the threshold photon number and the coupling strength. With respect
to these parameters, we find quantities which only vary significantly during
the transition between the Kapitza Dirac and the Bragg regimes. A possible
connection of the present observations to Brownian motion is also discussed.Comment: Close to the version published in J. Phys.
Early Stage of Superradiance from Bose-Einstein Condensates
We investigate the dynamics of matter and optical waves at the early stage of
superradiant Rayleigh scattering from Bose-Einstein Condensates. Our analysis
is within a spatially dependent quantum model which is capable of providing
analytic solutions for the operators of interest. The predictions of the
present model are compared to the predictions of a closely related mean field
model, and we provide a procedure that allows one to calculate quantum
expectation values by averaging over semiclassical solutions. The coherence
properties of the outgoing scattered light are also analyzed, and it is shown
that the corresponding correlation functions may provide detailed information
about the internal dynamics of the system.Comment: 27 pages, 8 figure
Correlated directional atomic clouds via four-heterowave mixing
We investigate the coherence properties of pairs of counter-propagating
atomic clouds, produced in superradiant Rayleigh scattering off atomic
condensates. It is shown that these clouds exhibit long-range spatial coherence
and strong nonclassical density cross-correlations, which make this scheme a
promising candidate for the production of highly directional nonclassically
correlated atomic pulses.Comment: 12 pages, 3 figure
Large N_c, Constituent Quarks, and N, Delta Charge Radii
We show how one may define baryon constituent quarks in a rigorous manner,
given physical assumptions that hold in the large-N_c limit of QCD. This
constituent picture gives rise to an operator expansion that has been used to
study large-N_c baryon observables; here we apply it to the case of charge
radii of the N and Delta states, using minimal dynamical assumptions. For
example, one finds the relation r_p^2 - r_{Delta^+}^2 = r_n^2 - r_{Delta^0}^2
to be broken only by three-body, O(1/N_c^2) effects for any N_c.Comment: 15 pages, 1 eps figure. Version to appear in Phys. Rev.
Gynaecological referrals to Baragwanath Hospital
Three hundred and fifty-nine consecutive referral letters to Baragwanath Hospital's gynaecological outpatients' departn:lent were analysed. Letters from private doctors contained significantly less clinical infonnation than those from clinics. Only11% of referring private doctors mentioned what treatment they had given patients before sending them to hospital. Soweto clinic nurses tended to include more information in their letters than clinic doctors. There were no significant differencesin the number of appropriate referrals and incorrect diagnoses from private doctors, clinic doctors and clinic nurses respectively. The poor communication, especially between general practitioners and the hospital, is probably the result of overwork and lack of time. Hospital doctors should reply to well-written referral letters, andliaison between clinics and the hospital ought to be improved and expanded
