Approximate solutions for the single soliton in a Skyrmion-type model with a dilaton scalar field

We consider the analytical properties of the single-soliton solution in a Skyrmion-type Lagrangian that incorporates the scaling properties of quantum chromodynamics (QCD) through the coupling of the chiral field to a scalar field interpreted as a bound state of gluons. The model was proposed in previous works to describe the Goldstone pions in a dense medium, being also useful for studying the properties of nuclear matter and the in-medium properties of mesons and nucleons. Guided by an asymptotic analysis of the Euler-Lagrange equations, we propose approximate analytical representations for the single soliton solution in terms of rational approximants exponentially localized. Following the Pad\'e method, we construct a sequence of approximants from the exact power series solutions near the origin. We find that the convergence of the approximate representations to the numerical solutions is considerably improved by taking the expansion coefficients as free parameters and then minimizing the mass of the Skyrmion using our ans\"atze for the fields. We also perform an analysis of convergence by computation of physical quantities showing that the proposed analytical representations are very useful useful for phenomenological calculations.Comment: 13 pages, 3 eps figures, version to be published in Phys.Rev.

    Air speed and attitude probe

    Get PDF
An air speed and attitude probe characterized by a pivot shaft normally projected from a data boom and supported thereby for rotation about an axis of rotation coincident with the longitudinal axis of the shaft is described. The probe is a tubular body supported for angular displacement about the axis of rotation and has a fin mounted on the body for maintaining one end of the body in facing relation with relative wind and has a pair of transducers mounted in the body for providing intelligence indicative of total pressure and static pressure for use in determining air speed. A stack of potentiometers coupled with the shaft to provide intelligence indicative of aircraft attitude, and circuitry connecting the transducers and potentiometers to suitable telemetry circuits are described

Towards understanding Regge trajectories in holographic QCD

We reassess a work done by Migdal on the spectrum of low-energy vector mesons in QCD in the light of the AdS-QCD correspondence. Recently, a tantalizing parallelism was suggested between Migdal's work and a family of holographic duals of QCD. Despite the intriguing similarities, both approaches face a major drawback: the spectrum is in conflict with well-tested Regge scaling. However, it has recently been shown that holographic duals can be modified to accomodate Regge behavior. Therefore, it is interesting to understand whether Regge behavior can also be achieved in Migdal's approach. In this paper we investigate this issue. We find that Migdal's approach, which is based on a modified Pade approximant, is closely related to the issue of quark-hadron duality breakdown in QCD.Comment: 17 pages, 1 figure. Vector Meson Dominance as a first step in a systematic approximation: the pion vector form factor

Pade Approximants can be used to go beyond Vector Meson Dominance in a systematic approximation. We illustrate this fact with the case of the pion vector form factor and extract values for the first two coefficients of its Taylor expansion. Pade Approximants are shown to be a useful and simple tool for incorporating high-energy information, allowing an improved determination of these Taylor coefficients.Comment: 13 pages, 7 figure

Quantification of neurodegeneration by measurement of brain-specific proteins

Quantification of neurodegeneration in animal models is typically assessed by time-consuming and observer-dependent immunocytochemistry. This study aimed to investigate if newly developed ELISA techniques could provide an observer-independent, cost-effective and time-saving tool for this purpose. Neurofilament heavy chain (NfH(SM135)), astrocytic glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP), S100B and ferritin, markers of axonal loss, gliosis, astrocyte activation and microglial activation, respectively, were quantified in the spinal cord homogenates of mice with chronic relapsing experimental allergic encephalomyelitis (CREAE, n=8) and controls (n=7). Levels of GFAP were found to be threefold elevated in CREAE (13 ng/mg protein) when compared to control animals (4.5 ng/mg protein, p<0.001). The inverse was observed for NfH(SM135) (21 ng/mg protein vs. 63 ng/mg protein, p<0.001), ferritin (542 ng/mg protein vs. 858 ng/mg protein, p<0.001) and S100B (786 ng/mg protein vs. 2080 ng/mg protein, N.S.). These findings were confirmed by immunocytochemistry, which demonstrated intense staining for GFAP and decreased staining for NfH(SM135) in CREAE compared to control animals. These findings indicate that axonal loss and gliosis can be estimated biochemically using the newly developed ELISA assays for NfH(SM135) and GFAP. These assays may facilitate the quantification of pathological features involved in neurodegeneration

Infrared Consistency of NSVZ and DRED Supersymmetric Gluodynamics

Pade approximant methods are applied to known terms of the DRED beta- function for N = 1 supersymmetric SU(3) Yang-Mills theory. Each of the [N|M] approximants with N + M less than or equal to 4 (M not equal to zero) constructed from this series exhibits a positive pole which precedes any zeros of the approximant, consistent with the same infrared-attractor pole behaviour known to characterise the exact NSVZ beta-function. A similar Pade-approximant analysis of truncations of the NSVZ series is shown consistently to reproduce the geometric-series pole of the exact NSVZ beta function.Comment: LaTeX, 15 page

On the relation between low-energy constants and resonance saturation

Although there are phenomenological indications that the low-energy constants in the chiral lagrangian may be understood in terms of a finite number of hadronic resonances, it remains unclear how this follows from QCD. One of the arguments usually given is that low-energy constants are associated with chiral symmetry breaking, while QCD perturbation theory suggests that at high energy chiral symmetry is unbroken, so that only low-lying resonances contribute to the low-energy constants. We revisit this argument in the limit of large Nc, discussing its validity in particular for the low-energy constant L8, and conclude that QCD may be more subtle that what this argument suggests. We illustrate our considerations in a simple Regge-like model which also applies at finite Nc.Comment: 15 pages, one figur
