    Operation of the T2K time projection chambers

    The three time projection chambers of the T2K near detector are micro pattern gaseous detectors based on bulk micromegas technology. They have been operated successfully during the first two physics runs of the experiment.     Relative entropy and the stability of shocks and contact discontinuities for systems of conservation laws with non BV perturbations

    We develop a theory based on relative entropy to show the uniqueness and L^2 stability (up to a translation) of extremal entropic Rankine-Hugoniot discontinuities for systems of conservation laws (typically 1-shocks, n-shocks, 1-contact discontinuities and n-contact discontinuities of large amplitude) among bounded entropic weak solutions having an additional trace property. The existence of a convex entropy is needed. No BV estimate is needed on the weak solutions considered. The theory holds without smallness condition. The assumptions are quite general. For instance, strict hyperbolicity is not needed globally. For fluid mechanics, the theory handles solutions with vacuum.Comment: 29 page

    Uniqueness and weak-BV stability for 2×22\times 2 conservation laws

    Let a 1-d system of hyperbolic conservation laws, with two unknowns, be endowed with a convex entropy. We consider the family of small BVBV functions which are global solutions of this equation. For any small BVBV initial data, such global solutions are known to exist. Moreover, they are known to be unique among BVBV solutions verifying either the so-called Tame Oscillation Condition, or the Bounded Variation Condition on space-like curves. In this paper, we show that these solutions are stable in a larger class of weak (and possibly not even BVBV) solutions of the system. This result extends the classical weak-strong uniqueness results which allow comparison to a smooth solution. Indeed our result extends these results to a weak-BVBV uniqueness result, where only one of the solutions is supposed to be small BVBV, and the other solution can come from a large class. As a consequence of our result, the Tame Oscillation Condition, and the Bounded Variation Condition on space-like curves are not necessary for the uniqueness of solutions in the BVBV theory, in the case of systems with 2 unknowns. The method is L2L^2 based. It builds up from the theory of a-contraction with shifts, where suitable weight functions aa are generated via the front tracking method.Comment: 25 pages, 1 figur

    Limitations of self-reported estimates of functional capacity using the Walking Impairment Questionnaire

    OBJECTIVE: A potential issue with the Walking Impairment Questionnaire (WIQ) is that it is relatively complex. We estimated the number of errors made by patients when self-completing the WIQ, and assessed the benefit of correcting missing, duplicate or paradoxical (i.e., reported lower difficulty for a higher-intensity task) answers.DESIGN: Prospective non-interventional study. MATERIALS: All consecutive new patients with claudication over a 3-month period. METHODS: The WIQ was self-completed before patients performed a constant-load treadmill walking test (maximised to 750 m). MAIN OUTCOME MEASURE: We analysed the coefficient of determination of the linear relationship between overall WIQ score (mean of the available subscales when at least two subscales are available) and treadmill maximal walking distance (MWD), before and after correction of errors. RESULTS: We studied 73 patients. Thirty-seven questionnaires had to be corrected for one or more errors. The coefficient of determination between the overall WIQ score and MWD was R(2) = 0.391 (n = 56) and R(2) = 0.426 (n = 73) before and after correction, respectively. CONCLUSION: Supervision of self-completed WIQs detects errors in almost half of the questionnaires, resulting in a missing overall WIQ score in 23% of cases among uncorrected questionnaires. The overall WIQ score correlates only moderately with MWD, even after correction

    Microstructure from ferroelastic transitions using strain pseudospin clock models in two and three dimensions: a local mean-field analysis

    We show how microstructure can arise in first-order ferroelastic structural transitions, in two and three spatial dimensions, through a local meanfield approximation of their pseudospin hamiltonians, that include anisotropic elastic interactions. Such transitions have symmetry-selected physical strains as their NOPN_{OP}-component order parameters, with Landau free energies that have a single zero-strain 'austenite' minimum at high temperatures, and spontaneous-strain 'martensite' minima of NVN_V structural variants at low temperatures. In a reduced description, the strains at Landau minima induce temperature-dependent, clock-like ZNV+1\mathbb{Z}_{N_V +1} hamiltonians, with NOPN_{OP}-component strain-pseudospin vectors S{\vec S} pointing to NV+1N_V + 1 discrete values (including zero). We study elastic texturing in five such first-order structural transitions through a local meanfield approximation of their pseudospin hamiltonians, that include the powerlaw interactions. As a prototype, we consider the two-variant square/rectangle transition, with a one-component, pseudospin taking NV+1=3N_V +1 =3 values of S=0,±1S= 0, \pm 1, as in a generalized Blume-Capel model. We then consider transitions with two-component (NOP=2N_{OP} = 2) pseudospins: the equilateral to centred-rectangle (NV=3N_V =3); the square to oblique polygon (NV=4N_V =4); the triangle to oblique (NV=6N_V =6) transitions; and finally the 3D cubic to tetragonal transition (NV=3 N_V =3). The local meanfield solutions in 2D and 3D yield oriented domain-walls patterns as from continuous-variable strain dynamics, showing the discrete-variable models capture the essential ferroelastic texturings. Other related hamiltonians illustrate that structural-transitions in materials science can be the source of interesting spin models in statistical mechanics.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figure

    Carotid rete mirabile and pseudoxanthoma elasticum: an accidental association?

    We report the case of a young female patient with a transient amaurosis due to a carotid rete mirabile (CRM), a rare congenital carotid malformation, and pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE), an inherited autosomal recessive systemic metabolic disorder characterised by fragmentation and mineralisation of elastic fibres in connective tissues (skin, eyes) and the vascular system. CRM is a rare form of intracranial carotid malformation whose association with PXE (6 cases at present) would appear not to be accidental. This observation suggests a new link between congenital arterial remodelling and the PXE
