Self-Perceptions of Proximal Stability as Measured by the Functional Movement Screen

    Get PDF
This mixed method study was designed to investigate self-perceptions before and after experiencing an activity that dynamically and statically challenges proximal stability of the pelvis, spine, and trunk. Twenty-eight, healthy Division II female soccer and volleyball collegiate players (17 soccer, 11 volley-ball) completed a self-reported Tegner activity scale, pretest questionnaire and posttest interview. A self-perceived numeric rating of the athletes’ proximal stability and performance on a functional movement screen (FMS) were recorded. A guided interview was used to examine the self perceptions of proximal stability after the FMS testing session. Differences and correlations between the pretest and posttest ratings of proximal stability and FMS scores were analyzed using a 1-sample Kolmogorov-Smirnov test and Spearman’s rank order correlation test, respectively. Residual standard error from a 1-way analysis of variance was used to explore the association between variables. Qualitative data were recorded and transcribed. There were significant differences between the pretest (3.4 6 0.63) and posttest ratings (3.16 0.49) of proximal stability (p= 0.01). The relationship between the pretest proximal stability ratings and the FMS scores was low (r=0.19, p = 0.33), whereas posttest rating and FMS scores had a moderately high (r= 0.68, p= 0.00) correlation. There was a smaller residual standard error for the posttest ratings (1.7) when compared with the pretest ratings (3.2) with the FMS. Four qualitative themes emerged: (a) wanting to do well, (b) expectations of performance, (c) focused mental mindset, and (d) body control. Self-perceptions of proximal stability in female athletes were influenced by undergoing a test that stressed the proximal stabilizers. Combining assessments of self-perceptions and proximal stability may assist clinicians and athletes in targeting components of training

Assessment of Synaptic Function During Short-Term Facilitation in Motor Nerve Terminals in the Crayfish

An enhanced buildup of [Ca2+]i occurs during short-term facilitation (STF) at the crayfish neuromuscular junction (NMJ). As a model system, this NMJ allows discrete postsynaptic quantal events to be counted and characterized in relation to STF. Providing 10 pulses, at 20 and 40Hz, we monitored postsynaptic quantal events over a discrete region of a nerve terminal with a focal macropatch electrode. Characteristics of quantal events were clustered into groups by peak amplitude and time to the peak amplitude. Since the synapses at this NMJ have varied spacing of active zones, number of active zones and synaptic size, the graded nature of synaptic recruitment is likely one means of titrating synaptic efficacy for the graded depolarization on the non-spiking muscle fiber. Synapses in this preparation would appear to have a quantal signature that can be used for quantifying their activity which is useful in estimating the overall number of active sites. We use mixture modeling to estimate n (number of active sites) and p (probability of vesicle fusion) from the quantal characteristics. In a preparation that was stimulated at 40Hz, synapses were recruited (increase in n) and the number active synapses increased in p. In a different preparation, p increased as the stimulation was changed from 20 to 40Hz, but n did not show a substantial increase; however, during the STF train, p increases slightly. This study provides a novel approach in determining subsets of the single evoked quanta to better estimate n and p which describe synaptic function

Use of historical control data for assessing treatment effects in clinical trials

    Get PDF
Clinical trials rarely, if ever, occur in a vacuum. Generally, large amounts of clinical data are available prior to the start of a study, particularly on the current study’s control arm. There is obvious appeal in using (i.e., β€˜borrowing’) this information. With historical data providing information on the control arm, more trial resources can be devoted to the novel treatment while retaining accurate estimates of the current control arm parameters. This can result in more accurate point estimates, increased power, and reduced type I error in clinical trials, provided the historical information is sufficiently similar to the current control data. If this assumption of similarity is not satisfied, however, one can acquire increased mean square error of point estimates due to bias and either reduced power or increased type I error depending on the direction of the bias. In this manuscript, we review several methods for historical borrowing, illustrating how key parameters in each method affect borrowing behavior, and then, we compare these methods on the basis of mean square error, power and type I error. We emphasize two main themes. First, we discuss the idea of β€˜dynamic’ (versus β€˜static’) borrowing. Second, we emphasize the decision process involved in determining whether or not to include historical borrowing in terms of the perceived likelihood that the current control arm is sufficiently similar to the historical data. Our goal is to provide a clear review of the key issues involved in historical borrowing and provide a comparison of several methods useful for practitioners

Besides the win of a participating in the Eurovision country often shows the ideological and political European vector and in fact serves as political PR of the winning or host country. Consequently the analysis of applied communication technologies is relevant and in-demand for event PR. Research object: communication activities of international music contest (on the example of Eurovision in Kyiv in 2017). Research subject: function of status PR event in country image formation. The aim of research: to prove that international music contest Eurovision contributes host country image formation. The tasks of research: to develop research terminology based on scientific literature on image making, branding and event management; to define actual communication technologies applied in special PR events on country image formation; to describe European Broadcasting Union role in host country image formation; to appreciate effectiveness of applied communication technologies on host country image formation in Eurovision; to give recommendations for host country image formation with the help of Eurovision. Theoretical base: scientific works written by E. Bykova, D. Gavra, A. Pankrukhin, B. Jenes, E. Kaverina, U. Halcbaur, J. Goldblatt and D. PassmanΒ΄s works on music business and P. Jordan on county image building with the help of Eurovision, etc. The empirical base: PR documents from official Eurovision and European Broadcasting Union websites; more than 1.5 million articles on Ukraine in European media stored in the base of international Ukrainian image monitoring project Oko; content of the mass media and social media base Factiva; Google.Analytics data. Practical significance: the research proves that international music contest Eurovision is relevant for the host country image formation independently of the success level of applied country image formation communication technologies. Approbation: General positions of current thesis were aprobated on international scientific forum Media in modern world and were published at the collection of articles of the forum and have the status of a scientific article posted in the RINC database. Thesis structure: Research consists of introduction, 3 chapters: Special event function in country image formation, Eurovision as EBU special event and communication potential of Eurovision as a platform for image formation; conclusion, literature list from 67 positions and 12 attachments. The convergence of accounting and economics: A causal analysis of the relationship between exchange rates and the balance of payments of the Philippines and developed countries

    No full text
With the rise of globalization, understanding international exchanges and transactions has become a necessity. Due to this, there came a need for a standard recording procedure for international transactions between economies which prompted governments to adopt basic accounting procedures to monitor international economic activities. With this, the research explores the applications of accounting standards in a countrys economic matters, and examines the relationship of exchange rates and the national balance sheet accounts. This study subjects previous studies’ claimed relationship between the said variables to weak and strong tests for causality to determine whether a causal relationship between the two may be established. The weak test is done by implementing the propensity score matching technique which allows the group to mimic experimental measures by constructing a counterfactual. Meanwhile, the strong test is done through the dose response technique which can measure the effects of an increase in changes in exchange rate to the changes in a country’s balance of payments position. For this study, the group utilizes a quarterly time-series data of the Philippines from 1999 to 2015 and a 2012 cross-section data of developed economies from the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas and Bloomberg, respectively. The results show that there exists a significant causal relationship between exchange rate and the national balance sheet accounts, and that such relationship is non-linear it tapers off, strengthens or stays the same after a certain level of exchange rate fluctuation
