    Torque vectoring based drive assistance system for turning an electric narrow tilting vehicle

    The increasing number of cars leads to traffic congestion and limits parking issue in urban area. The narrow tilting vehicles therefore can potentially become the next generation of city cars due to its narrow width. However, due to the difficulty in leaning a narrow tilting vehicle, a drive assistance strategy is required to maintain its roll stability during a turn. This article presents an effective approach using torque vectoring method to assist the rider in balancing the narrow tilting vehicles, thus reducing the counter-steering requirements. The proposed approach is designed as the combination of two torque controllers: steer angle–based torque vectoring controller and tilting compensator–based torque vectoring controller. The steer angle–based torque vectoring controller reduces the counter-steering process via adjusting the vectoring torque based on the steering angle from the rider. Meanwhile, the tilting compensator–based torque vectoring controller develops the steer angle–based torque vectoring with an additional tilting compensator to help balancing the leaning behaviour of narrow tilting vehicles. Numerical simulations with a number of case studies have been carried out to verify the performance of designed controllers. The results imply that the counter-steering process can be eliminated and the roll stability performance can be improved with the usage of the presented approach

    Hispanic Americans are becoming a substantial purchasing force in the United States, thus creating as many opportunities as challenges for marketers in many companies. Although the literature is rich with studies of this sub-culture, new information is always welcome due to the extensive changes that this segment of society is experiencing, from population growth, increasing purchasing power and income, to shifting demographics, diversity, and acculturation. This study is designed to enhance understanding about Hispanic Americans via a survey of a random sample of 120 Hispanic American adult individuals in the Inland Empire area of Southern California. The data collected was analyzed and in this paper, the findings are reported and discussed as well as some marketing tactics recommended. At the strategic marketing level, the authors recommend the application of a theoretical marketing framework, one that matches the nature of the Hispanics’ market and its dynamics, to develop winning strategies and guidelines for marketers who are interested in this vital market segment

    Preliminary Results of a Study Investigating Aviation Student’s Intentions to use Virtual Reality for Flight Training

    Educators have incorporated technology into flight training for decades. These devices have increased in complexity since the Link trainers of the early 20th century, resulting in aviation training devices, full flight simulators, and other technologies currently used in flight training programs. Acceptance has also increased since developers shifted the design of video games to incorporate educational aspects as is demonstrated by the popularity of computer based training. Recently, educators have developed more immersive simulation technologies for training purposes such as virtual, augmented, and mixed reality (VR, AR, MR). Although immersive technologies such as VR are being implemented into aviation training programs, educators do not always consider the factors that influence students to use these technologies. This is an important consideration for educators to understand: Student perspective of technology impacts decisions related to accepting and ultimately using the technology in a learning environment. The Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) and its extensions have been used to study how students accept and use various technologies in the educational environment. A pilot study was used to validate a survey instrument and measurement model to investigate the factors that influence aviation students to use VR for flight training. Results indicate that the CFA model and survey instrument have adequate reliability and validity for eight of the 10 factors. Two factors are reviewed for inclusion in the final measurement model. The results of the full study are anticipated for publication in the fall of 2020

    Long-range Ni/Mn structural order in epitaxial double perovskite La2NiMnO6 thin films

    We report and compare the structural, magnetic, and optical properties of ordered La2NiMnO6 thin films and its disordered LaNi0.5Mn0.5O3 counterpart. An x-ray diffraction study reveals that the B-site Ni/Mn ordering induces additional XRD reflections as the crystal symmetry is transformed from a pseudocubic perovskite unit cell in the disordered phase to a monoclinic form with larger lattice parameters for the ordered phase. Polarized Raman spectroscopy studies reveal that the ordered samples are characterized by additional phonon excitations that are absent in the disordered phase. The appearance of these additional phonon excitations is interpreted as the clearest signature of Brillouin zone folding as a result of the long-range Ni/Mn ordering in La2NiMnO6. Both ordered and disordered materials display a single ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic transition. The ordered films display also a saturation magnetization close to 4.8 mB/f.u. and a transition temperature (FM-TC) around 270 K, while the disordered ones have only a 3.7 mB/f.u. saturation magnetization and a FM-TC around 138 K. The differences in their magnetic behaviours are understood based on the distinct local electronic configurations of their Ni/Mn cations.Comment: 15 pages, 5 fig

    Phase formation, phonon behavior, and magnetic properties of novel ferromagnetic La3BAlMnO9 (B = Co or Ni) triple perovskites

    In the quest for novel magnetoelectric materials, we have grown, stabilized and explored the properties of La3BAlMnO9 (B = Co or Mn) thin films. In this paper, we report the influence of the growth parameters that promote B/Al/Mn ordering in the pseudo-cubic unit cell and their likely influence on the magnetic and multiferroic properties. The temperature dependence of the magnetization shows that La3CoAlMnO9 is ferromagnetic up to 190 K while La3NiAlMnO9 shows a TC of 130 K. The behavior of these films are compared and contrasted with related La2BMnO6 double perovskites. It is observed that the insertion of AlO6 octahedra between CoO6 and MnO6 suppresses significantly the strength of the superexchange interaction, spin-phonon and spin-polar coupling.Comment: 13 pages, 3 fig

    Separation of Pt(IV), Rh(III) and Fe(III) in acid chloride leach solutions of glass scraps by solvent extraction with various extractants

    Solvent extraction experiments were conducted to recover pure Pt(IV) and Rh(III) from the chloride leach liquor of glass industry scraps containing a small amount of Fe(III) using Alamine 336, TOPO, TBP and Cyanex 923. The Pt(IV) and Fe(III) were selectively extracted by Cyanex 923 leaving Rh(III) in the raffinate, while only Fe(III) was extracted by TBP. The Pt(IV) in the loaded Cyanex 923 phase was first selectively stripped over Fe(III) by NaSCN and then the remaining Fe(III) was stripped by HCl solution. The Fe(III) in the loaded TBP phase was easily stripped by dilute HCl solution. The McCabe-Thiele diagrams for the extraction of Pt(IV) by Cyanex 923 and of Fe(III) by TBP were constructed. Based on the obtained results, a flowsheet for the separation of three metals from the real leaching solution of glass industry scraps was proposed
