    Near-field spectra of quantum well excitons with non-Markovian phonon scattering

    The excitonic absorption spectrum for a disordered quantum well in presence of exciton-acoustic phonon interaction is treated beyond the Markov approximation. Realistic disorder exciton states are taken from a microscopic simulation, and the deformation potential interaction is implemented. The exciton Green's function is solved with a self energy in second order Born quality. The calculated spectra differ from a superposition of Lorentzian lineshapes by enhanced inter-peak absorption. This is a manifestation of pure dephasing which should be possible to measure in near-field experiments.Comment: 8 pages, 7 figure

    Observation of soliton explosions in a passively mode-locked fiber laser

    Soliton explosions are among the most exotic dissipative phenomena studied in mode-locked lasers. In this regime, a dissipative soliton circulating in the laser cavity experiences an abrupt structural collapse, but within a few roundtrips returns to its original quasi-stable state. In this work we report on the first observation of such events in a fiber laser. Specifically, we identify clear explosion signatures in measurements of shot-to-shot spectra of an Yb-doped mode-locked fiber laser that is operating in a transition regime between stable and noise-like emission. The comparatively long, all-normal-dispersion cavity used in our experiments also permits direct time-domain measurements, and we show that the explosions manifest themselves as abrupt temporal shifts in the output pulse train.     Wick Theorem for General Initial States

    We present a compact and simplified proof of a generalized Wick theorem to calculate the Green's function of bosonic and fermionic systems in an arbitrary initial state. It is shown that the decomposition of the non-interacting nn-particle Green's function is equivalent to solving a boundary problem for the Martin-Schwinger hierarchy; for non-correlated initial states a one-line proof of the standard Wick theorem is given. Our result leads to new self-energy diagrams and an elegant relation with those of the imaginary-time formalism is derived. The theorem is easy to use and can be combined with any ground-state numerical technique to calculate time-dependent properties.Comment: 9 pages, 5 figure; extended version published in Phys. Rev.

    On ultrafast magnetic flux dendrite propagation into thin superconducting films

    We suggest a new theoretical approach describing the velocity of magnetic flux dendrite penetration into thin superconducting films. The key assumptions for this approach are based upon experimental observations. We treat a dendrite tip motion as a propagating flux jump instability. Two different regimes of dendrite propagation are found. A fast initial stage is followed by a slow stage, which sets in as soon as a dendrite enters into the vortex-free region. We find that the dendrite velocity is inversely proportional to the sample thickness. The theoretical results and experimental data obtained by a magneto-optic pump-probe technique are compared and excellent agreement between the calculations and measurements is found.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure

    Electron-phonon coupling in the C60 fullerene within the many-body GW approach

    We study the electron-phonon coupling in the C60 fullerene within the first-principles GW approach, focusing on the lowest unoccupied t1u three-fold electronic state which is relevant for the superconducting transition in electron doped fullerides. It is shown that the strength of the coupling is significantly enhanced as compared to standard density functional theory calculations with (semi)local functionals, with a 48% increase of the electron-phonon potential Vep. The calculated GW value for the contribution from the Hg modes of 93 meV comes within 4% of the most recent experimental values. The present results call for a reinvestigation of previous density functional based calculations of electron-phonon coupling in covalent systems in general.Comment: 4 pages, 0 figur
