This paper discusses the estimation of parameters in the zero-inflated Poisson (ZIP) model by the method of moments. The method of moments estimators (MMEs) are analytically compared with the maximum likelihood estimators (MLEs). The results of a modest simulation study are presented

Objective: To develop an accurate, precise and linear Reverse Phase High Performance Liquid Chromatography (RP-HPLC) method and validate as per ICH guidelines for the quantitative estimation of Ribavirin (200mg) in tablets. Methods: The optimized method uses a reverse phase column, Enable Make KromasilC18 (250 X 4.6 mm; 5μ), a mobile phase of phosphate buffer (pH 4.2): acetonitrile in the proportion of 85:15 v/v, flow rate of 1.0 ml/min and a detection wavelength of 215 nm using a PDA detector. Results: The developed method resulted in Ribavirin eluting at 2.606 min. Ribavirin exhibited linear in the range 25-150μg/ml. The precision is exemplified by the relative standard deviation of 0.4%. Percentage Mean recovery was found to be in the range of 98â€102, during accuracy studies. The limit of detection (LOD) and limit of quantitiation (LOQ) was found to be 0.24ng/ml and 0.73ng/ml respectively. Conclusion: An accurate, precise and linear RP-HPLC method was developed and validated for the quantitative estimation of Ribavirin in VIRAZIDE (200mg) tablets as per ICH guidelines and hence it can be used for the routine analysis in various pharmaceutical industries.Â

Case of leucism in the spadenose shark, Scoliodon laticaudus (Müller and Henle, 1838) from Mangalore, Karnataka

    Get PDF
The present paper reports the first case of leucism in the spadenose shark, Scoliodon laticaudus from India. This report is based on the study of a single specimen of S. laticaudus caught by a commercial trawler off Mangalore coast. Photographs were taken and measurements recorded using vernier calipers. Partial reduction in pigmentation and no other morphometric differences were seen between the specimen studied and other normal spadenose sharks. Conclusion of leucism in the specimen was done based on the partial lack of integumentary pigments and normal eye colour

Optimization of osmotic dehydration in dragon fruit (Hylocereus Polyrhizus) slices using response surface methodology

    Get PDF
Dragon fruit (Hylocereus polyrhizus) is emerging as a super crop because of its several health and therapeutic benefits and ease of cultivation even in degraded land. Using response surface approach, the process parameters for osmotic dehydration of dragon fruit slices included process temperature, syrup concentration and process time. Slices of size 20 x 20 x 5 mm were dipped into sugar syrup with a syrup to dragon fruit slice ratio of 4:1 (w/w). After osmotic dehydration, the initial moisture content of dragon fruit samples was reduced to 27.5-68.49% (wb), demonstrating water loss, solid gain, and mass reduction in the range of 18.01-65.9%, 6.3-17.9% and 9.31-50.6%, respectively. After statistical analysis of the data on water loss, solid gain, and weight reduction, it was shown that regression equations of second order provided the greatest match for all the experimental data. With a syrup to fruit ratio of 4:1 and a syrup concentration of 65.3° Brix at a syrup temperature of 56.5°C, a maximum water loss of 58.2% and a minimum solid gain of 7.7% were expected to occur in 240 minutes of osmotic dehydration

Optimal Object Placement Policies To Minimize The Network-Wide Content Provisioning Cost

    Get PDF
Social Wireless Networks are formed by mobile devices such as data enabled phones, electronic book readers etc., allocating common interests in electronic content and physically gathering together in public places. Electronic object caching in such social wireless networks (SWNETs)are capable to diminish the content provisioning cost which depends greatly on the service and pricing dependences amide range of stakeholders together with content providers (CP), network service providers and End Consumers (EC). Drawing inspiration from Amazon’s Kindle electronic book delivery business, this paper build up practical network, service and pricing models which are then used for creating two object caching approaches for diminishing content provisioning costs in networks with homogenous and assorted object demands. The paper creates logical and replication models for analyzing the proposed caching approaches   in the presence of selfish users that diverge from network-wide cost-optimal policies.

Melioidosis – A Rare Cause of Neck Abscess in Immunocompromised

    Get PDF
Introduction Melioidosis is an infectious disease caused by Burkholderia pseudomallei, a saprophytic bacterium found in soil and water. Though multiple abscesses are a common presentation of melioidosis, isolated neck abscess due to B. pseudomallei is extremely rare and it is more prevalent in immunocompromised people. Case Report A young woman with uncontrolled Type II diabetes presented with neck abscess. Abscess was drained and culture showed Burkholderia pseudomallei. Appropriate treatment was given, including 3 weeks of parenteral antibiotics and 3 months of oral prophylactic antibiotics to prevent relapses. Patient responded well to treatment. Discussion Increased awareness of opportunistic infections like melioidosis is essential in the present era as diabetes is emerging as a global pandemic. It clinically resembles tubercular neck abscess. Strong clinical suspicion, early intervention and long term antibiotics can cure the disease completely without relapse

EFFECTS OF CHEMICAL REACTION AND RADIATION ABSORPTION ON THE UNSTEADY MHD FREE CONVECTIVE FLOW PAST AN INFINITE VERTICAL MOVING PLATE WITH CONSTANT HEAT SOURCE

    Get PDF
ABSTRACT An analysis has been carried out to investigate the effects of the heat source, chemical reaction and radiation absorption on unsteady MHD flow with heat and mass transfer of an incompressible, viscous, electrically conducting fluid past an infinite vertical moving plate with constant temperature in the presence of transverse applied magnetic field. An exact solution for the flow problem has been obtained by solving the governing equations using Laplace-transform technique. At time 0 > ′ t , the plate is given an impulsive motion with a constant velocity 0 u . At the same time, the plate temperature and concentration levels near the plate are raised to w T′ and w C′ , respectively. The velocity, temperature, concentration and the rate of mass transfer are discussed through graphs while the numerical values of Nusselt number are presented in a table

Current Trends in Nanoporous Anodized Alumina Platforms for Biosensing Applications

    Get PDF
Pristine aluminum (Al) has received great deal of attention on fabrication of nanoporous anodized alumina (NAA) with arrays of nanosized uniform pores with controllable pore sizes and lengths by the anodization process. There are many applications of NAA in the field of biosensors due to its numerous key factors such as ease of fabrication, high surface area, chemical stability and detection of biomolecules through bioconjugation of active molecules, its rapidness, and real-time monitoring. Herein, we reviewed the recent trends on the fabrication of NAA for high sensitive biosensor platforms like bare sensors, gold coated sensors, multilayer sensors, and microfluidic device supported sensors for the detection of various biomolecules. In addition, we have discussed the future prospectus about the improvement of NAA based biosensors for the detection of biomolecules
