    Early mandibular canine-lateral incisor transposition: case report

    Purpose. The main aim of the present study is to present a case of mandibular transposition between lateral incisor and canine in a paediatric patient. Materials and methods. A fixed multibracket orthodontic treatment was performed by means of a modified welded arch as to correct the transposition and obtaining a class I functional and symmetrical occlusion, also thanks to the early diagnosis of the eruption anomaly. Results. Our case report shows that a satisfactory treatment of mandibular transpositions is obtained when detected at an early stage of the tooth development. Conclusions. The main treatment options to be taken into consideration in case of a mandibular transposition are two: correcting the transposition or aligning it leaving the dental elements in their transposed order; in both cases, the followups show a stable condition, maintained without relapses. Several factors, such as age of the patient, occlusion, aesthetics, patient’s collaboration, periodontal support and duration of treatment have to be considered as to prevent potential damage to dental elements and support appliances. The choice between the two treatment approaches for mandibular lateral incisor/canine transpositions mainly depends on the time the anomaly is detected

    Correlation between parodontal indexes and orthodontic retainers: prospective study in a group of 16 patients

    Purpose. Fixed retainers are used to stabilize dental elements after orthodontic treatment. Being it a permanent treatment, it is necessary to instruct patients about a constant and continuous monitoring of their periodontal conditions and a correct oral hygiene. The aim of this study was to highlight the possible adverse effects of bonded retainers on parameters correlated to the health conditions of periodontal tissues. Materials and methods. We selected 16 patients, under treatment in the Orthodontics Department of University of Bari Dental School, who had undergone a lingual retainer insertion at the end of the orthodontic treatment. The patients were then divided into two groups (Control Group and Study Group) and monitored for 3 and 36 months, respectively. The following indexes were taken into consideration: gingival index (GI), plaque index (PI) and the presence of calculus (Calculus Index, CI), the probing depth and the presence of gingival recession on the six inferior frontal dental elements. Results. After the observation was carried out, any of the patients showed periodontal sockets and gingival recession. In the Study Group, only 1 patient had a PI score=3, the 7 left had scores between 0.66 and 2.83. In the Control Group, one patient had score=0, the other ones showed values between 0.5 and 1.66. The mean GI in the Study Group peaked at a score of 2.83, the minimum was 0.66; whereas in the Control Group the maximum value was 2 and the minimum 0.66. The CI in the Group Study was between 1 and 2. In the Control Group it was absent in only 1 patient, whereas in the remaining 7, it had a value between 0.3 and 1. The clinical data were studied by means of the Wilcoxon test. We found a statistically significant difference for what concerns the Plaque Indexes (PI) (P>0.05) and Calculus Indexes (CI) (P>0.1) in both groups, with higher scores in the Study Group, having retainers for 36 months. Any statistically significant difference was calculated for the GI. Conclusions. We can therefore conclude that patients with lingual retainers need periodontal hygiene and treatment as to prevent, in the course of time, periodontal damages non-detectable in short-term

    Sustainable Hydrogen Production via Sorption Enhanced Reforming of Complex Biorefinery Side Streams in a Fixed Bed Adiabatic Reactor

    In this work, sorption enhanced steam reforming is explored as a potential solution for the valorization of gaseous streams recovered from biorefinery hydrogenation processes. The hydrogen content of such streams limits the hydrocarbon conversion in conventional steam reforming due to thermodynamic and kinetic constraints. A previously developed 1D dynamic heterogeneous model of an adiabatic reactor was thus applied to evaluate the effect of H-2 dilution on the performance indicators of the sorption enhanced reforming process. The mathematical model analysis highlights that despite of CO2 capture by the sorbent favorably modifies the thermodynamics of syngas production, H-2 dilution worsens the performance of the sorption enhanced reforming of model H-2/CH4 streams with respect to pure CH4. Results show a drop of 17% for CH4 conversion and a reduction of 15.4% of the captured CO2 on passing from pure methane to a H-2/CH4 feed with a 40/60 molar ratio. However, on increasing the heat capacity of the bed, by replacing part of the sorbent with an inert heat carrier, better performances are calculated for the H-2/CH4 feed matching the pure CH4 case. The presence of C2+ hydrocarbons is assessed as well and the results show a significant improvement in the reformer's performance; in the case of a stream composed of H-2/CH4/C3H8 with a molar ratio 40/45/15, the total hydrocarbon conversion grows to 92.8%, CO2 capture ratio to 82.6%, and H-2 purity to 95.6%. The positive effect is associated with thermal factors that promote the reaction kinetics. Thus, the suitability of the sorption enhanced reforming technology to H-2-rich and C-poor streams is strictly composition dependent; by cofeeding of C2+ hydrocarbons, the process turns into a remarkable solution for converting gaseous streams in pure H-2

    A Discontinuum Finite Element Modelling Approach for Reproducing the Structural Behaviour of Masonry Walls

    This paper defines an innovative approach for modelling masonry walls when the structural behaviour of new or existing buildings, subjected to vertical and lateral load, has to be evaluated. Such an approach aims to provide a calculation tool that allows to model the non-linear behaviour of masonry structures with a reduced numerical effort, but, nonetheless, without jeopardizing the accuracy of obtained results. The proposed model is a typical D-FEM (Discontinuum Finite Element Model) that, differently by the most common methodologies, is composed by deformable blocks separated by interface elements arranged along pre-established surfaces of potential cracks. To this aim, the 'Combined Cracking-Shearing-Crushing' model, proposed by Lourenco for the FEM analysis with the so called simplified micro-models, is used. Some experimental tests taken by litterature are described. Such tests are used as reference for setting up a non-linear model with the 'simplified micro-modelling' approach, which considers the presence of blocks, of the same geometry of the stone units, separated by interface elements. Once that this modelling approach is validated, it is used to obtain the nonlinear response of 65 masonry panels which differ in terms of geometry, vertical loads, as well as in terms of the most significant mechanical parameters. The obtained responses for the 65 panels are taken into account for the calibration of the here proposed model. In detail, a proper variation of the coefficients contributing to the 'Combined Cracking-Shearing-Crushing' formulation is implemented through a trial and error procedure, which ends when a satisfying comparison between the results provided by the two different methods of modelling is achieved; this for taking into consideration the constraints imposed on the development of cracking surfaces. The outcomes obtained with the here proposed modelling approach are then elaborated in order to develop suitable closed form equations, which provide the necessary coefficients that have to be used for implementing the modified 'Combined Cracking-Shearing-Crushing' when a generic masonry panel has to be modelled

    Scientific trends in clinical research on zirconia dental implants: A bibliometric review

    Background: The clinical use of zirconia implants has been shown to increase steadily due to their biological, aesthetic, and physical properties; therefore, this bibliometric study aimed to review the clinical research and co-authors in the field of zirconia dental implant rehabilitation. Methods: We searched Scopus and Web of Science databases using a comprehensive search strategy to 5 October 2020, and independently paired reviewers who screened studies, and collected data with inclusion criteria restricted to clinical research only (either prospective or retrospective). Data on article title, co-authors, number of citations received, journal details, publication year, country and institution involved, funding, study design, marginal bone loss, survival rate, failure, follow-up, and the author’s bibliometric data were collected and evaluated. Results: A total of 29 clinical studies were published between 2008 and 2020 as 41.4% were prospective cohort studies and 48.3% originated from Germany. Most of the included studies had been published in Clinical Oral Implant Research (n = 12), and the most productive institution was the Medical Center of University of Freiburg. The author with the largest number of clinical studies on zirconia implants was Kohal R.J. (n = 10), followed by Spies B.C. (n = 8). Conclusions: This study revealed that zirconia implants have been more prominent in the last ten years, which is a valuable option for oral rehabilitation with marginal bone loss and survival rate comparable to titanium dental implants

    Efficient Identification of HIV Serodiscordant Couples by Existing HIV Testing Programs in South Brazil.

    ObjectiveTo examine the feasibility of identifying HIV negative at risk individuals in HIV serodiscordant couples, during voluntary HIV testing in South Brazil.MethodsWe surveyed HIV testers at 4 public testing sites in Rio Grande do Sul. We obtained information on risk behaviors and sexual partnerships. HIV testing and testing for recent infection were performed; HIV prevalence and risk behaviors were assessed among subjects who reported having a steady partner who was HIV positive (serodiscordant group) and compared with the general testing population.ResultsAmong 3100 patients, 490 (15.8%) reported being in a steady relationship with an HIV positive partner. New HIV infections were diagnosed in 23% of the serodiscordant group (vs. 13% in the general population, p = 0.01); among newly positive subjects, recent HIV infections were more frequent (23/86, 26.7%) among testers with positive partners than among the general testing group (52/334; 15.6%; p = 0.016). Less than half of the serodiscordant testers reported having used a condom during the last sexual intercourse with their HIV-positive partner. Participants with inconsistent condom use with steady partner were four times more likely to test positive for HIV compared to those who reported always using condoms with the steady partner (OR: 4.2; 95% CI: 2.3 to 7.5).ConclusionIt is highly feasible to identify large numbers of HIV susceptible individuals who are in HIV serodiscordant relationships in South Brazil testing sites. Condom use within HIV serodiscordant couples is low in this setting, suggesting urgent need for biomedical prevention strategies to reduce HIV transmission

    In questo articolo vengono illustrati i risultati di prove di resistenza alla corrosione eseguite su campioni di alluminio AA 6082 T6 rivestiti con un film di Al2O3 depositato mediante letto fluido. Sono state preparate 4 serie di provini con diversi tempi di deposizione (tra 30 e 240 minuti). Le prove di corrosione sono state eseguite mediante Spettroscopia di Impedenza Elettrochimica (EIS), Rumore Elettrochimico (ENA) e Impedenza Elettrochimica Localizzata (LEIS). I risultati hanno evidenziato una migliore resistenza alla corrosione dei campioni trattati fino a 120 minuti, mentre prestazioni più scadenti sono state registrate per i campioni sottoposti a tempi di deposizione superiori

    Effect of Different Irrigating Solutions and Endodontic Sealers on Bond Strength of the Dentin - Post Interface with and without Defects.

    Abstract Aims. To investigate how the interfacial shear strength of the dentin – post interface with and without defects changes for different combinations irrigant/sealer. Methods. In forty human decoronated and instrumented teeth, fibreglass posts were in-serted. The obtained root segments were randomly assigned to four different groups ac-cording to the irrigant adopted and the cement used to seal the root canal. The root segments were processed for metyl-methacrylate embedding. Serial sections were obtained and sub-mitted to histomorphometric analyses in order to observe any defect of adhesion at the dentin – post interface and to measure the defects’ dimension. The serial sections were also submitted to micro-push-out test. The measured shear strength values were subjected to statistical analysis by one-way ANOVA. The values of bond strength determined for the defective samples were correlated with the dimension of the defects. Finite element models were built to interpret and corroborate the experimental findings. Results. ANOVA showed that the generic combination irrigant/sealer does not affect the interfacial shear strength values. The bond strength of the samples without defects was av-eragely twice as large as that of the defective samples. The defects occupying more than 12 % of the total transverse section area of the endodontic cement layer led to a reduction of the bond strength of about 70 %. The predictions of the finite element models were in agreement with the experimental results. Conclusion. Defects occupying less than 2 % of the total transverse section area of the cement layer were shown to be acceptable as they have rather negligible effects on the shear strength values. Technologies/protocols should be developed to minimize the number and the size of the defects

    Osteogenic differentiation of dental follicle stem cells.

    Background: Stem cells are defined as clonogenic cells capable of self-renewal and multi-lineage differentiation. A population of these cells has been identified in human Dental Follicle (DF). Dental Follicle Stem Cells (DFSCs) were found in pediatric unerupted wisdom teeth and have been shown to differentiate, under particular conditions, into various cell types of the mesenchymal tissues. Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate if cells isolated from DF show stem features, differentiate toward osteoblastic phenotype and express osteoblastic markers. Methods: We studied the immunophenotype of DFSCs by flow cytometric analysis, the osteoblastic markers of differentiated DFSCs were assayed by histochemical methods and real-time PCR. Results: We demonstrated that DFSCs expressed a heterogeneous assortment of makers associated with stemness. Moreover DFSCs differentiated into osteoblast-like cells, producing mineralized matrix nodules and expressed the typical osteoblastic markers, Alkaline Phosphatase (ALP) and Collagen I (Coll I).
