A systematic correlation between two-dimensional flow topology and the abstract statistics of turbulence
Velocity differences in the direct enstrophy cascade of two-dimensional
turbulence are correlated with the underlying flow topology. The statistics of
the transverse and longitudinal velocity differences are found to be governed
by different structures. The wings of the transverse distribution are dominated
by strong vortex centers, whereas, the tails of the longitudinal differences
are dominated by saddles. Viewed in the framework of earlier theoretical work
this result suggests that the transfer of enstrophy to smaller scales is
accomplished in regions of the flow dominated by saddles.Comment: 4 pages, 4 figure
Vorticity statistics in the two-dimensional enstrophy cascade
We report the first extensive experimental observation of the two-dimensional
enstrophy cascade, along with the determination of the high order vorticity
statistics. The energy spectra we obtain are remarkably close to the Kraichnan
Batchelor expectation. The distributions of the vorticity increments, in the
inertial range, deviate only little from gaussianity and the corresponding
structure functions exponents are indistinguishable from zero. It is thus shown
that there is no sizeable small scale intermittency in the enstrophy cascade,
in agreement with recent theoretical analyses.Comment: 5 pages, 7 Figure
Hysteresis at low Reynolds number: the onset of 2D vortex shedding
Hysteresis has been observed in a study of the transition between laminar
flow and vortex shedding in a quasi-two dimensional system. The system is a
vertical, rapidly flowing soap film which is penetrated by a rod oriented
perpendicular to the film plane. Our experiments show that the transition from
laminar flow to a periodic K\'arm\'an vortex street can be hysteretic, i.e.
vortices can survive at velocities lower than the velocity needed to generate

Statistical geometry in scalar turbulence
A general link between geometry and intermittency in passive scalar
turbulence is established. Intermittency is qualitatively traced back to events
where tracer particles stay for anomalousy long times in degenerate geometries
characterized by strong clustering. The quantitative counterpart is the
existence of special functions of particle configurations which are
statistically invariant under the flow. These are the statistical integrals of
motion controlling the scalar statistics at small scales and responsible for
the breaking of scale invariance associated to intermittency.Comment: 4 pages, 5 figure
Are Steadily Moving Crystals Unstable?
We study the dynamics of small fluctuations about the uniform state of a
crystal moving through a dissipative medium, e.g. a sedimenting colloidal
crystal or a moving flux lattice, using a set of continuum equations for the
displacement fields, and a one-dimensional driven lattice-gas model for the
coupled concentration and tilt fields. For the colloidal crystal we predict a
continuous nonequilibrium phase transition to a clumped state above a critical

Artificial Intelligence in Swedish Policies::Values, benefits, considerations and risks
Part 4: AI, Data Analytics and Automated Decision MakingInternational audienceArtificial intelligence (AI) is said to be the next big phase in digitalization. There is a global ongoing race to develop, implement and make use of AI in both the private and public sector. The many responsibilities of governments in this race are complicated and cut across a number of areas. Therefore, it is important that the use of AI supports these diverse aspects of governmental commitments and values. The aim of this paper is to analyze how AI is portrayed in Swedish policy documents and what values are attributed to the use of AI. We analyze Swedish policy documents and map benefits, considerations and risks with AI into different value ideals, based on an established e-government value framework. We conclude that there is a discrepancy in the policy level discourse on the use of AI between different value ideals. Our findings show that AI is strongly associated with improving efficiency and service quality in line with previous e-government policy studies. Interestingly, few benefits are highlighted concerning engagement of citizens in policy making. A more nuanced view on AI is needed for creating realistic expectations on how this technology can benefit society

Positive and negative streamers in ambient air: modeling evolution and velocities
We simulate short positive and negative streamers in air at standard
temperature and pressure. They evolve in homogeneous electric fields or emerge
from needle electrodes with voltages of 10 to 20 kV. The streamer velocity at
given streamer length depends only weakly on the initial ionization seed,
except in the case of negative streamers in homogeneous fields. We characterize
the streamers by length, head radius, head charge and field enhancement. We
show that the velocity of positive streamers is mainly determined by their
radius and in quantitative agreement with recent experimental results both for
radius and velocity. The velocity of negative streamers is dominated by
electron drift in the enhanced field; in the low local fields of the present
simulations, it is little influenced by photo-ionization. Though negative
streamer fronts always move at least with the electron drift velocity in the
local field, this drift motion broadens the streamer head, decreases the field
enhancement and ultimately leads to slower propagation or even extinction of

Enhanced effector function of cytotoxic cells in the induced sputum of COPD patients
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>We have previously shown that NK (CD56<sup>+</sup>CD3<sup>-</sup>) and NKT-like (CD56<sup>+</sup>CD3<sup>+</sup>) cells are reduced in both numbers and cytotoxicity in peripheral blood. The aim of the present study was to investigate their numbers and function within induced sputum.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Induced sputum cell numbers and intracellular granzyme B and perforin were analysed by flow cytometry. Immunomagnetically selected CD56<sup>+ </sup>cells (NK and NKT-like cells) were used in an LDH release assay to determine cytotoxicity.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>The proportion of NK cells and NKT-like cells in smokers with COPD (COPD subjects) was significantly higher (12.7% and 3%, respectively) than in healthy smokers (smokers) (5.7%, p < 0.01; 1%, p < 0.001) and non-smoking healthy subjects (HNS) (4.2%, p < 0.001; 0.8%, p < 0.01). The proportions of NK cells and NKT-like cells expressing <it>both </it>perforin <it>and </it>granzyme B were also significantly higher in COPD subjects compared to smokers and HNS. CD56<sup>+ </sup>cells from COPD subjects were significantly more cytotoxic (1414 biological lytic activity) than those from smokers (142.5; p < 0.01) and HNS (3.8; p < 0.001) and were inversely correlated to FEV<sub>1</sub>. (r = -0.75; p = 0.0098).</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>We have shown an increased proportion of NK and NKT-like cells in the induced sputum of COPD subjects and have demonstrated that these cells are significantly more cytotoxic in COPD subjects than smokers and HNS.</p
Classifying breast cancer surgery: a novel, complexity-based system for oncological, oncoplastic and reconstructive procedures, and proof of principle by analysis of 1225 operations in 1166 patients
<p>Abstract</p> <p>Background</p> <p>One of the basic prerequisites for generating evidence-based data is the availability of classification systems. Attempts to date to classify breast cancer operations have focussed on specific problems, e.g. the avoidance of secondary corrective surgery for surgical defects, rather than taking a generic approach.</p> <p>Methods</p> <p>Starting from an existing, simpler empirical scheme based on the complexity of breast surgical procedures, which was used in-house primarily in operative report-writing, a novel classification of ablative and breast-conserving procedures initially needed to be developed and elaborated systematically. To obtain proof of principle, a prospectively planned analysis of patient records for all major breast cancer-related operations performed at our breast centre in 2005 and 2006 was conducted using the new classification. Data were analysed using basic descriptive statistics such as frequency tables.</p> <p>Results</p> <p>A novel two-type, six-tier classification system comprising 12 main categories, 13 subcategories and 39 sub-subcategories of oncological, oncoplastic and reconstructive breast cancer-related surgery was successfully developed. Our system permitted unequivocal classification, without exception, of all 1225 procedures performed in 1166 breast cancer patients in 2005 and 2006.</p> <p>Conclusion</p> <p>Breast cancer-related surgical procedures can be generically classified according to their surgical complexity. Analysis of all major procedures performed at our breast centre during the study period provides proof of principle for this novel classification system. We envisage various applications for this classification, including uses in randomised clinical trials, guideline development, specialist surgical training, continuing professional development as well as quality of care and public health research.</p
