Application of laminar flow control to supersonic transport configurations
The feasibility and impact of implementing a laminar flow control system on a supersonic transport configuration were investigated. A hybrid laminar flow control scheme consisting of suction controlled and natural laminar flow was developed for a double-delta type wing planform. The required suction flow rates were determined from boundary layer stability analyses using representative wing pressure distributions. A preliminary design of structural modifications needed to accommodate suction through a perforated titanium skin was carried out together with the ducting and systems needed to collect, compress and discharge the suction air. The benefits of reduced aerodynamic drag were weighed against the weight, volume and power requirement penalties of suction system installation in a mission performance and sizing program to assess the net benefits. The study showed a feasibility of achieving significant laminarization of the wing surface by use of a hybrid scheme, leading to an 8.2 percent reduction in the cruise drag. This resulted in an 8.5 percent reduction in the maximum takeoff weight and a 12 percent reduction in the fuel burn after the inclusion of the LFC system installation penalties. Several research needs were identified for a resolution of aerodynamics, structural and systems issues before these potential benefits could be realized in a practical system
Dynamic behavior of an unsteady trubulent boundary layer
Experiments on an unsteady turbulent boundary layer are reported in which the upstream portion of the flow is steady (in the mean) and in the downstream region, the boundary layer sees a linearly decreasing free stream velocity. This velocity gradient oscillates in time, at frequencies ranging from zero to approximately the bursting frequency. For the small amplitude, the mean velocity and mean turbulence intensity profiles are unaffected by the oscillations. The amplitude of the periodic velocity component, although as much as 70% greater than that in the free stream for very low frequencies, becomes equal to that in the free stream at higher frequencies. At high frequencies, both the boundary layer thickness and the Reynolds stress distribution across the boundary layer become frozen. The behavior at higher amplitude is quite similar. At sufficiently high frequencies, the boundary layer thickness remains frozen at the mean value over the oscillation cycle, even though flow reverses near the wall during a part of the cycle
Hawking Radiation as Tunneling
We present a short and direct derivation of Hawking radiation as a tunneling
process, based on particles in a dynamical geometry. The imaginary part of the
action for the classically forbidden process is related to the Boltzmann factor
for emission at the Hawking temperature. Because the derivation respects
conservation laws, the exact spectrum is not precisely thermal. We compare and
contrast the problem of spontaneous emission of charged particles from a

Triple mesh technique in repair of recurrent lumbar incisional hernia
Lumbar hernias occur infrequently and can be congenital, primary (inferior or Petit type, and superior or Grynfeltt type), post-traumatic, or incisional. They are bounded by the 12th rib, the iliac crest, the erector spinae, and the external oblique muscle. Most postoperative incisional hernias occur in nephrectomy or aortic aneurysm repair incisions for which various surgical method in context of meshplasty are available. In this case 60 yr. male hypertensive patient presented to the outpatient clinic of institute with recurrent left side lumbar incisional hernia, patient was previously operated for left side nephrolithiasis 15 years back and onlay meshplasty 2 years back for incisional hernia. The patient was operated under high risk for recurrent incisional hernia repair by triple layered meshplasties in the same sitting. Lumbar incisional hernias are often diffuse with fascial defects that are usually hard to appreciate. Computed tomography scan is the diagnostic modality of choice with adjuvant clinical findings, which allows differentiating them from abdominal wall musculature denervation atrophy complicating flank incisions. Repairing these hernias is difficult due to the surrounding structures for which our surgical approach included a triple mesh repair consisting of underlay, inlay and onlay meshplasty thereby anticipating further such incidences of incisional hernia
The impact of power outages on households in Zambia
As global average temperatures rise, so does the frequency and intensity of El Niño-induced droughts, which in turn threaten the reliability of hydropower. 1.4 billion people live in countries where hydropower constitutes more than a quarter of the electricity production and which have experienced El Niño droughts, meaning many more power outages can be expected around the world. Little research has been conducted on the impact of power outages on mental health. This study takes Zambia as its case study to examine the impact that El Niño droughts have had on the lives of householders connected to a highly hydropower-dependant electricity grid, and includes the impact it has had on their physical and self-reported mental health. Using 54 online responses to a survey, we found that the greatest impacts of outages spoiled food, compromised entertainment, compromised ability to work and limitation in cooking options. More than a fifth of respondents reported experiencing self-reported depression to a major degree or all of the time due to power outages, with individuals writing their own responses that they felt debilitated, experienced reduced communication and reduced activities, and stress. Using Bayesian inference, we found that changes in sleeping patterns arising from power outages was a statistically significant predictor of self-reported depression. 63% of surveyed households were willing to pay approximately USD 0.10/kWh as of the end of 2019, about double the tariff that they did, to ensure reliable electricity supply. Quantum fields in gravity
We give a brief description of some compelling connections between general
relativity and thermodynamics through i) the semi-classical tunnelling
method(s) and ii) the field-theoretical modelling of Unruh-DeWitt detectors. In
both approaches it is possible to interpret some quantities in a

Projection and ground state correlations made simple
We develop and test efficient approximations to estimate ground state
correlations associated with low- and zero-energy modes. The scheme is an
extension of the generator-coordinate-method (GCM) within Gaussian overlap
approximation (GOA). We show that GOA fails in non-Cartesian topologies and
present a topologically correct generalization of GOA (topGOA). An RPA-like
correction is derived as the small amplitude limit of topGOA, called topRPA.
Using exactly solvable models, the topGOA and topRPA schemes are compared with
conventional approaches (GCM-GOA, RPA, Lipkin-Nogami projection) for
rotational-vibrational motion and for particle number projection. The results

Particle decay branching ratios for states of astrophysical importance in 19Ne
We have measured proton and alpha-particle branching ratios of excited states
in 19Ne formed using the 19F(3He,t) reaction at a beam energy of 25 MeV. These
ratios have a large impact on the astrophysical reaction rates of
15O(alpha,gamma), 18F(p,gamma) and 18F(p,alpha), which are of interest in
understanding energy generation in x-ray bursts and in interpreting anticipated
gamma-ray observations of novae. We detect decay protons and alpha-particles
using a silicon detector array in coincidence with tritons measured in the
focal plane detector of our Enge split-pole spectrograph. The silicon array
consists of five strip detectors of the type used in the Louvain-Edinburgh
Detector Array, subtending angles from 130 degrees to 165 degrees with
approximately 14% lab efficiency. The correlation angular distributions give
additional confidence in some prior spin-parity assignments that were based on
gamma branchings. We measure Gamma_p/Gamma=0.387+-0.016 for the 665 keV proton

Empowering change: The effects of energy provision on individual aspirations in slum communities
This paper discusses the role of energy provision in influencing the social aspirations of people living in slums. We examine factors that influence the shift in aspirations in five slum settlements using data from 500 interviews conducted in serviced and non-serviced slums from the state of Gujarat in India. The non-serviced slums did not have access to basic services namely water, sanitation, energy, roads, solid waste and rainwater management. We find empirical evidence which suggests that when basic infrastructure provisions are met, slum dwellers shift their focus from lower order aspirations to the higher order aspirations like health, education, housing and land ownership. We argue that energy provision enhances productivity and enables slum dwellers to shift their aspirations upwards. Furthermore, we test the effect of work days lost due to illness on the relationship between higher order aspirations and aspirations for energy provision. When provision of energy is low, higher work day loss dampens higher order aspirations. For policy makers, this study highlights the critical link between the infrastructure services preferred by slum dwellers and their social aspirations for growth
