Internal Transitions of Two-Dimensional Charged Magneto-Excitons X-: Theory and Experiment
Internal spin-singlet and spin-triplet transitions of charged excitons X- in
magnetic fields in quantum wells have been studied experimentally and
theoretically. The allowed X- transitions are photoionizing and exhibit a
characteristic double-peak structure, which reflects the rich structure of the
magnetoexciton continua in higher Landau levels (LL's). We discuss a novel
exact selection rule, a hidden manifestation of translational invariance, that

Integrated Hepatitis C Care for People Who Inject Drugs (Heplink): Protocol for a Feasibility Study in Primary Care (Preprint)
Background:
Hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection is a major cause of chronic liver disease and death. Drug use remains the significant cause of new infections in the European Union, with estimates of HCV antibody prevalence among people who inject drugs ranging from 5% to 90% in 29 European countries. In Ireland and the European Union, primary care is a key area to focus efforts to enhance HCV diagnosis and treatment among people who inject drugs.
Objective:
The Heplink study aims to improve HCV care outcomes among opiate substitution therapy (OST) patients in general practice by developing an integrated model of HCV care and evaluating its feasibility, acceptability, and likely efficacy.
Methods:
The integrated model of care comprises education of community practitioners, outreach of an HCV-trained nurse into general practitioner (GP) practices, and enhanced access of patients to community-based evaluation of their HCV disease (including a novel approach to diagnosis, that is, Echosens FibroScan Mini 430). A total of 24 OST-prescribing GP practices were recruited from the professional networks and databases of members of the research consortium. Patients were eligible if they are aged ≥18 years, on OST, and attend the practice for any reason during the recruitment period. Baseline data on HCV care processes and outcomes were extracted from the clinical records of participating patients.
Results:
This study is ongoing and has the potential to make an important impact on patient care and provide high-quality evidence to help GPs make important decisions on HCV testing and onward referral.
Conclusions:
A substantial proportion of HCV-positive patients on OST in general practice are not engaged with specialist hospital services but qualify for direct-acting antiviral drugs treatment. The Heplink model has the potential to reduce HCV-related morbidity and mortality. Registered Report Identifier: RR1-10.2196/904
Terahertz dynamics of a topologically protected state: quantum Hall effect plateaus near cyclotron resonance in a GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunction
We measure the Hall conductivity of a two-dimensional electron gas formed at
a GaAs/AlGaAs heterojunction in the terahertz regime close to the cyclotron
resonance frequency by employing a highly sensitive Faraday rotation method
coupled with electrical gating of the sample to change the electron density. We
observe clear plateau-and step-like features in the Faraday rotation angle vs.
electron density and magnetic field (Landau-level filling factor), which are
the high frequency manifestation of quantum Hall plateaus - a signature of
topologically protected edge states. The results are compared to a recent

Terahertz Magneto Optical Polarization Modulation Spectroscopy
We report the development of new terahertz techniques for rapidly measuring
the complex Faraday angle in systems with broken time-reversal symmetry using
the cyclotron resonance of a GaAs two-dimensional electron gas in a magnetic
field as a system for demonstration of performance. We have made polarization
modulation, high sensitivity (< 1 mrad) narrow band rotation measurements with
a CW optically pumped molecular gas laser, and by combining the distinct
advantages of terahertz (THz) time domain spectroscopy and polarization
modulation techniques, we have demonstrated rapid broadband rotation

Robust Magnetic Polarons in Type-II (Zn,Mn)Te Quantum Dots
We present evidence of magnetic ordering in type-II (Zn, Mn) Te quantum dots.
This ordering is attributed to the formation of bound magnetic polarons caused
by the exchange interaction between the strongly localized holes and Mn within
the dots. In our photoluminescence studies, the magnetic polarons are detected
at temperatures up to ~ 200 K, with a binding energy of ~ 40 meV. In addition,
these dots display an unusually small Zeeman shift with applied field (2 meV at
10 T). This behavior is explained by a small and weakly temperature-dependent
magnetic susceptibility due to anti-ferromagnetic coupling of the Mn spins
Bilateral Assessment of Functional Tasks for Robot-assisted Therapy Applications
This article presents a novel evaluation system along with methods to evaluate bilateral coordination of arm function on activities of daily living tasks before and after robot-assisted therapy. An affordable bilateral assessment system (BiAS) consisting of two mini-passive measuring units modeled as three degree of freedom robots is described. The process for evaluating functional tasks using the BiAS is presented and we demonstrate its ability to measure wrist kinematic trajectories. Three metrics, phase difference, movement overlap, and task completion time, are used to evaluate the BiAS system on a bilateral symmetric (bi-drink) and a bilateral asymmetric (bi-pour) functional task. Wrist position and velocity trajectories are evaluated using these metrics to provide insight into temporal and spatial bilateral deficits after stroke. The BiAS system quantified movements of the wrists during functional tasks and detected differences in impaired and unimpaired arm movements. Case studies showed that stroke patients compared to healthy subjects move slower and are less likely to use their arm simultaneously even when the functional task requires simultaneous movement. After robot-assisted therapy, interlimb coordination spatial deficits moved toward normal coordination on functional tasks

HEPCARE EUROPE- A Case study of a Service Innovation Project Aiming at Improving the Elimination of HCV in Vulnerable Populations in Four European Cities
OBJECTIVES: Hepatitis C Virus (HCV) is an important cause of chronic liver disease. Among at-risk populations, access to diagnosis and treatment is challenging. We describe an integrated model of care, Hepcare Europe, developed to address this challenge. METHODS: Using a case-study approach, we describe the cascade of care outcomes at all sites. Costing analyses estimated the cost per person screened and linked to care. RESULTS: A total of 2608 participants were recruited across 218 clinical sites. HCV antibody test results were obtained for 2568(98.5%), 1074(41.8%) were antibody-positive, 687(60.5%) tested positive for HCV-RNA, 650(60.5%) were linked to care and 319(43.5%) started treatment. 196(61.4%) of treatment initiates achieved a Sustained Viral Response (SVR) at dataset closure, 108(33.9%) were still on treatment, 8(2.7%) defaulted from treatment, and 7(2.6%) had a virologic failure or died. The cost per person screened varied from Є194 to Є635, while cost per person linked to care varied from Є364 to Є2035. CONCLUSIONS: Hepcare enhanced access to HCV treatment and cure, costs were affordable in all settings, offering a framework for scale-up and reproducibility
Is there evidence for accelerated polyethylene wear in uncemented compared to cemented acetabular components? A systematic review of the literature
Joint arthroplasty registries show an increased rate of aseptic loosening in uncemented acetabular components as compared to cemented acetabular components. Since loosening is associated with particulate wear debris, we postulated that uncemented acetabular components demonstrate a higher polyethylene wear rate than cemented acetabular components in total hip arthroplasty. We performed a systematic review of the peer-reviewed literature, comparing the wear rate in uncemented and cemented acetabular components in total hip arthroplasty. Studies were identified using MEDLINE (PubMed), EMBASE and the Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials. Study quality was assessed using the Grading of Recommendations Assessment, Development and Evaluation (GRADE) approach. The search resulted in 425 papers. After excluding duplicates and selection based on title and abstracts, nine studies were found eligible for further analysis: two randomised controlled trials, and seven observational studies. One randomised controlled trial found a higher polyethylene wear rate in uncemented acetabular components, while the other found no differences. Three out of seven observational studies showed a higher polyethylene wear in uncemented acetabular component fixation; the other four studies did not show any differences in wear rates. The available evidence suggests that a higher annual wear rate may be encountered in uncemented acetabular components as compared to cemented components
Internal transitions of quasi-2D charged magneto-excitons in the presence of purposely introduced weak lateral potential energy variations
Optically detected resonance spectroscopy has been used to investigate
effects of weak random lateral potential energy fluctuations on internal
transitions of charged magneto-excitons (trions) in quasi two-dimensional
GaAs/AlGaAs quantum-well (QW) structures. Resonant changes in the ensemble
photoluminescence induced by far-infrared radiation were studied as a function
of magnetic field for samples having: 1) no growth interrupts (short range
well-width fluctuations), and 2) intentional growth interrupts (long range
monolayer well-width differences). Only bound-to-continuum internal transitions
of the negatively charged trion are observed for samples of type 1. In
contrast, a feature on the high field (low energy) side of electron cyclotron
resonance is seen for samples of type 2 with well widths of 14.1 and 8.4 nm.
This feature is attributed to a bound-to-bound transition of the spin-triplet
with non-zero oscillator strength resulting from breaking of translational
