    Classification of Triadic Chord Inversions Using Kohonen Self-organizing Maps

    In this paper we discuss the application of the Kohonen Selforganizing Maps to the classification of triadic chords in inversions and root positions. Our motivation started in the validation of Schönberg´s hypotheses of the harmonic features of each chord inversion. We employed the Kohonen network, which has been generally known as an optimum pattern classification tool in several areas, including music, to verify that hypothesis.     Spin-polarized transport in ferromagnetic multilayered semiconductor nanostructures

    The occurrence of inhomogeneous spin-density distribution in multilayered ferromagnetic diluted magnetic semiconductor nanostructures leads to strong dependence of the spin-polarized transport properties on these systems. The spin-dependent mobility, conductivity and resistivity in (Ga,Mn)As/GaAs,(Ga,Mn)N/GaN, and (Si,Mn)/Si multilayers are calculated as a function of temperature, scaled by the average magnetization of the diluted magnetic semiconductor layers. An increase of the resistivity near the transition temperature is obtained. We observed that the spin-polarized transport properties changes strongly among the three materials.Comment: 3 pages, 4 figure

    Desenvolvimento do Webservice EGENT - Estudo Gráfico da Evolução dos N-Grams no Tempo.

    Este trabalho apresenta um conjunto de ferramentas computacionais para o mapeamento da cobertura temporal de n-grams e termos de um domínio específico do conhecimento agrícola. A partir de um corpus textual formado por textos enriquecidos com metadados anotados automaticamente sobre a cultura de cana-de-açúcar tais ferramentas criam e apresentam a evolução do uso dos termos ao longo tempo. Além dos metadados, e usando o programa REMBRANDT também foram mapeadas a Entidades Mencionadas com classe de Tempo constantes nos conteúdos de texto para futuras análises semânticas a partir destas marcações. Os resultados são bastante satisfatórios e podem ser analisados sob o aspecto estratégico, cuja análise pode ser feita do ponto de vista do alcance dos objetivos propostos e seus trabalhos futuros, e outro mais prático cuja análise foca o ambiente operacional das ferramentas produzidas.CIIC 2012.     Optical Line Width Broadening Mechanisms at the 10 kHz Level in Eu^(3+):Y_2O_3 Nanoparticles

    We identify the physical mechanisms responsible for the optical homogeneous broadening in Eu^(3+):Y_2O_3 nanoparticles to determine whether rare-earth crystals can be miniaturized to volumes less than λ^3 while preserving their appeal for quantum technology hardware. By studying how the homogeneous line width depends on temperature, applied magnetic field, and measurement time scale, the dominant broadening interactions for various temperature ranges above 3 K were characterized. Below 3 K the homogeneous line width is dominated by an interaction not observed in bulk crystal studies. These measurements demonstrate that broadening due to size-dependent phonon interactions is not a significant contributor to the homogeneous line width, which contrasts previous studies in rare-earth ion nanocrystals. Importantly, the results provide strong evidence that for the 400 nm diameter nanoparticles under study the minimum line width achieved (45 ± 1 kHz at 1.3 K) is not fundamentally limited. In addition, we highlight that the expected broadening caused by electric field fluctuations arising from surface charges is comparable to the observed broadening. Under the assumption that such Stark broadening is a significant contribution to the homogeneous line width, several strategies for reducing this line width to below 10 kHz are discussed. Furthermore, it is demonstrated that the Eu^(3+) hyperfine state lifetime is sufficiently long to preserve spectral features for time scales up to 1 s. These results allow integrated rare-earth ion quantum optics to be pursued at a submicron scale and, hence, open up directions for greater scaling of rare-earth quantum technology

    EFFECTS OF EARLY CONCURRENT PROTEIN MALNUTRITION AND ENVIRONMENTAL STIMULATION ON THE CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM AND BEHAVIOR

    A complex program of environmental and sensory stimulation was developed to study its potential effects in reversing some of the alterations produced by early protein malnutrition in the brain and behavior of rats. Litters (dam plus 6 male pups) were fed diets containing 8% (malnourished) or 25% (well-nourished) casein. After weaning, the animals were maintained on the same diets as their respective dams until 50 days of age. Environmental stimulation consisted of 3-min daily handing from birth to 50 days of age by rearing the rats in an enriched living cage and exposing the animal to visual, auditory, and olfactory stimuli. At. 50 days of inhibitory avoidance tests. Animal of the same age were sacrificed, the brain removed and divided in telencephalon, brain steam and cerebellum. DNA and RNA were assessed in in telencephalon and cerebellum. Protein malnutrition produced brain weight deficits that were partially reversed by environmental stimulation. The behavioral measure showed lower locomotor activity and higher latencies in inhibitory avoidance for malnourished animals as compared to well-nourished animals. Environmental stimulation reduced the aversiveness in the inhibitory avoidance test as showed by lower latencies in the stimulated group of animals. These results suggest that early protein malnutrition impairs brain and behavior of rats and a complex program of environmental stimulation is beneficial to reverse some of those impairments.     Note. Colonisation of bench cover materials by Salmonella typhimurium

    Due to the increasing requirements of food safety, it is of utmost importance to know the mechanisms that can determine the occurrence of the phenomenon commonly assigned by cross contamination, which can be expressed by the transference of harmful substances or microorganisms to the human food chain. This is particularly susceptible during food preparation, because it can occur by the transference of the pathogen microorganisms from food to the surfaces where they had been prepared, and from there to foods initially not contaminated, therefore initiating the cycle. This study attempted to investigate the colonisation by Salmonella typhimurium ATCC 13311 of marble and granite, two materials commonly used as bench covers in kitchens of many countries. These materials were selected because there is a lack of studies in the literature about their ability for bacterial colonisation. In addition, the colonisation of stainless steel (SS) 304, a material usually studied, was also analysed in terms of comparison. Surface hydrophobicity and roughness were determined in order to explain the differences in the extent of adhesion. The results showed that SS was the material with a greater extent of colonisation by S. typhimurium, followed by marble and, almost to the same extent, by granite.
