    The 3+1 (ADM) formulation of General Relativity is used in, for example, canonical quantum gravity and numerical relativity. Here we present a 3+1 decomposition of the minimal Standard-Model Extension gravity Lagrangian.     Positive Psychology Interventions in the Classroom for Students with Special Needs: First Book

    This paper sets forth the empirical and theoretical underpinnings and evidence-based activities that teachers of students with special needs in low-income schools can utilize to manage behavioral challenges. The authors identify applicable positive psychology resources, as requested by First Book, a non-profit providing member educators with resources that help children learn and seeks to accelerate implementation of innovative research in low-income schools. The authors, at the request of First Book, focus on emotional intelligence, growth mindset, self-regulation and character strengths, operationalizing these topics with a two-pronged approach: 1) specific actions teachers can take to build positive classrooms and 2) practical in-the-moment strategies teachers can apply when facing common classroom challenges. The authors include a detailed “Super Circle” intervention as an example of embedding positive psychology interventions into existing teaching practices. While the authors recognize the need for further research on the application of positive psychology tools to special needs populations, they remain hopeful that these recommendations will benefit teachers and students with special needs in low-income schools. Finally, the authors provide a measurement plan First Book could use to determine the effectiveness of the resources they create and provide to their members based on the research and recommendations contained herein

    Demographic Factors Affecting the Adoption of Multiple Value-Added Practices by Oklahoma Cow-Calf Producers

    The utilization of marketing programs to enhance feeder calf value has been met with modest success in Oklahoma. Value-added programs are continually promoted as avenues for improving cow-calf profitability, but producer adoption of value-added practices lags in spite of research showing the value of these practices. Identifying producer characteristics that increase their likelihood to adopt value-added practices is critical to developing successful outreach efforts. Results from a survey of Oklahoma producers on value-added practice adoption indicate that multiple demographic variables influence a producer’s likelihood of practice adoption.     Design of Experiments for drop tower impact and tensile welding of 3D printed structures

    Two studies were conducted during this EYRCM program project; Drop Tower Impact of 3D printed structures and welding studies of 3D printed structures. Most recommendations for fused deposition method (FDM) 3D printer settings revolve around the final aesthetic of the part and do not focus on the strength of the part created. FDM 3D printed parts are typically quite weak in the vertical direction and can be prone to significant damage from impacts. A design of experiments (DOE) was used to determine which settings used to print the part have the greatest effect on the final appearance and impact strength of the part. Flat panels were printed and a drop tower impact test was conducted on the specimens. JMP was then used to statistically analyze the effects of the DOE. Additionally, several methods were explored to weld together 3D printed parts. Tensile testing was conducted to compare the weld joints, and it was determined that strong, effective welds can be attained with simple methodology. These studies open doors for new 3D printed designs to be used as final parts and/or allows for the splicing of several 3D printed parts into larger structures like a jigsaw puzzle

    The undertranslated transcriptome reveals widespread translational silencing by alternative 5' transcript leaders

    BACKGROUND: Translational efficiencies in Saccharomyces cerevisiae vary from transcript to transcript by approximately two orders of magnitude. Many of the poorly translated transcripts were found to respond to the appropriate external stimulus by recruiting ribosomes. Unexpectedly, a high frequency of these transcripts showed the appearance of altered 5' leaders that coincide with increased ribosome loading. RESULTS: Of the detectable transcripts in S. cerevisiae, 8% were found to be underloaded with ribosomes. Gene ontology categories of responses to stress or external stimuli were overrepresented in this population of transcripts. Seventeen poorly loaded transcripts involved in responses to pheromone, nitrogen starvation, and osmotic stress were selected for detailed study and were found to respond to the appropriate environmental signal with increased ribosome loading. Twelve of these regulated transcripts exhibited structural changes in their 5' transcript leaders in response to the environmental signal. In many of these the coding region remained intact, whereas regulated shortening of the 5' end truncated the open reading frame in others. Colinearity between the gene and transcript sequences eliminated regulated splicing as a mechanism for these alterations in structure. CONCLUSION: Frequent occurrence of coordinated changes in transcript structure and translation efficiency, in at least three different gene regulatory networks, suggests a widespread phenomenon. It is likely that many of these altered 5' leaders arose from changes in promoter usage. We speculate that production of translationally silenced transcripts may be one mechanism for allowing low-level transcription activity necessary for maintaining an open chromatin structure while not allowing inappropriate protein production

    Short-range forces due to Lorentz-symmetry violation

    Complementing previous theoretical and experimental work, we explore new types of short-range modifications to Newtonian gravity arising from spacetime-symmetry breaking. The first non-perturbative, i.e., to all orders in coefficients for Lorentz-symmetry breaking, are constructed in the Newtonian limit. We make use of the generic symmetry-breaking terms modifying the gravity sector and examine the isotropic coefficient limit. The results show new kinds of force law corrections, going beyond the standard Yukawa parameterization. Further, there are ranges of the values of the coefficients that could make the resulting forces large compared to the Newtonian prediction at short distances.     Prevalence of Mental Health Disorder Symptoms and Rates of Help-seeking Among University-Enrolled, Black Men

    Background. Black men in college represent a subgroup of emerging adults who are at increased risk of developing mental health disorders (MHDs), such as anxiety and depression. Such risk has been attributed to disproportionate experiences with everyday racial discrimination and high levels of psychological distress. Despite being at higher risk, university-enrolled, Black men are not utilizing mental health or health resources at optimal rates. The current evidence base describing prevalence of MHDs and health services utilization among Black men in college is limited. The present study addresses this by examining mental health prevalence among university-enrolled, Black men and their rates of health services utilization. Methods. We analyzed data (N ~ 2500) from a student survey, Spit for Science, a longitudinal, ongoing, research study at a mid-Atlantic, public university. Participants are given surveys in their freshman year and follow-up surveys every spring thereafter. Measures included: mental health disorders (depression and anxiety, as measured by the Symptom Checklist 90) and campus health service utilization (counseling center, health services, wellness center, and recreational sports). We conducted descriptive analyses to determine MHD symptom prevalence and utilization rates; Mann Whitney U tests to compare prevalence rates to White men and Black women; and, Chi-squared tests to compare rates of utilization among groups. Results. During their Freshman year, greater than 60% of students from each ethnic group reported at least one anxiety symptom and greater than 80% reported at least one depressive symptom. By senior year, reporting rates decreased significantly for Black men (49.6%) but remained high for White men (69.1%) and Black women (63%); p \u3c0.000. For depression, results were similar; however, only significant differences between Black men (72.7%) and Black women (87.1%); p\u3c0.000. Black men (20.4%), though reporting high levels of symptoms, still utilized counseling services at lower rates compared to White men (37.76%); p = 0.024. Conclusion. Findings suggest that Black men underutilize available campus health resources despite reporting one or more symptoms associated with anxiety and depression.
